ok, sorry for the rather long post previously, I should have done my research first.

I now understand that the fi2000r and the power commander perform the same function of adjusting the air-fuel ratio to enable the bike to perform better.

Qn1) Both are self adjustable as I understand, how do you ensure the optimal setting, given lets say that I have no technical aptitude whatsoever?

Qn 2) Does remapping of the ECU still need to be done after either is installed?

For power commander to be in optimal setting, best will be sending for bike to Dyno-run, the tester & its program will do the optimal setting that suits your ride.

You'd need to dyno your bike with a power commander. i got the fuelpak only because with just stage 1 modifications there was no real need to do up a map particularly for my bike, and i have no plans to diddle around with any other bits of my setup. Have you checked out the XL forum yet? They've been tossing around PCIII vs Fuelpak vs others for quite a while now, and it seems that nobody really has a problem with either, just what their particular requirements were. http://xlforum.net/index.html ... for sporties, the forum just about covers everything, i've found it a great help.

hi steven,

remapping not required according to some of the xlforum users. I did converse with some of them on private messages and they seem to be happy with the set up. This is just a cheaper alternatives to the remapping and dyno. Do a little reading on the forum that tingchiyen mentioned, it will answer a lot of questions you may have.

If you are going on power commander, then dont bother getting cobra tuner, the commander is a better choice. For me, i getting the Fi2000 because i am planning to ride the bike just around sin, I will use my other bikes if i need to go touring,i m doing my sporty towards a bobber...:D... but i also dont want the lean stock setting that HD set, so the cobra will help put it to a richer mixture.

In a nutshell, it all depends on what you want and how deep your pockets are and how much you are willing to spend, it's your ride and do it to what suit your riding purpose...:thumb:

Thank you all for your input and sharing your knowledge, I am truly learning alot. The XL forum is great as well.

At this point i'm leaning towards the cobra fi2000r with O2 sensors, it seems the simplest and least complicated of the lot.

All i'm going to do is a/c and muffler upgrade (qualifies as stage 1 right)

The HD catalogue doesnt seem to offer an ignition module for the 08 XL

From what i understand if its correct is remapping needs to be done only if i dont use a cobra / fuelpak or pwr commander right, cos these items more or less perform the function of a remap that the dealership would do?

Maxmadness, i'll be using the bike for normal day to day usage around singapore, the rest of the mods i hope to do are purely cosmetic. Also as this is my only bike at this time I hope to tour occasionally with it. So in your opinion would the Cobra be suitable, I'm asking this as you said you dont intend to tour with your sporty... what would the difference be if i use it for the occasional tour?

Also as you pointed out, the cobra seems the most economical of the lot, which is a big consideration, thank you.

Ah Fai, thanks for the reply and info, how much would a dyno run cost? And is it a one time thing?

Tingchiyen, thanks for the intro to the xl forum, like you, other than the a/c and mufflers i dont intend to do anything else to the setup... You said you got the SE SP mufflers, did you get these from the dealership?

Thanks again everyone for your replies, appreciate the info

If you are happy just "scooting" around sin and not too worried of having more pick up or power on your sporty, i think the cobra will do just fine in term of cost and simplicity of setup for a richer mixture from the stock HD setup. I got the cobra just for that and not for extra push or power on my sporty. Touring wont be an issue with the cobra. The touring thingy is just me, I had enough with small tank bikes for touring...:D...too much of a hassle to top up ever so often...so if i do tour, i use my 28litre bike...:D

I think realhog has the best deal on the cobra...link below, took them just 1 week to send me the package. But do do a search on the net to see if there is a better deal on it.

btw, how much does our local dealer charge for a remap and dyno? About a grand? anyone done it?

I came to this figure cause in USA it cost 500 to 800 for it...maybe i ask this as a casual question when i go to HD showroom for payment later.

:) For local dyno-run~ ie: just for dyno test its around S$160 +/- (price for the dyno-kit itself cost another S$500++)

Its a one-time-thingy, they will perform a base-run for your bike & then tune your ride.

As I know of there are 3 Dyno centre in Singapore, may be you wish to check them out~? They are the professional in this field & had Dyno Harleys before:

1) HKL @ Block 1008, Bukit Merah Lane, #01-16, Singapore 159722

Dyno-tuner: Ah Xiong @ 62781268

http://www.singaporebikes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=184135

2) Rack Werks @ Block 1005, #01-18, Bukit Merah Lane 2, Singapore 159761

Dyno-tuner: Norman Lee @ 62732203

http://www.singaporebikes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174645

3) No idea of the 3rd workshop's name, its located at Ubi area

I had dyno my Harley @ HKL, hope this will help :)

Christine, maxmadness and tingchiyen,

Thanks very much for the info, I really appreciate the advise

I'm more or less settles on the SS air cleaner, as for pipes, I don't think i'll make a very drastic change (although the RB Racing pipes are pretty damn nice, personally i prefer the look of dual pipes, and the Nitro Duals do look very tempting). I'm a bit hesitant on changing the entire exhaust system.

I guess my objective is:

1) Sound, i would like a deep sounding exhaust, something deeper and bassier (if there's such a word) than the stock pipes. Louder than stock but not too loud to the point of being inconsiderate. (SS / Vance and Hines / Pythons - good options?)

Therefore, I'm considering mufflers although the choice of which is to be determined? Any reviews on the SS mufflers?

And do mufflers have any effect on performance or is the effect just sound?

2) Performance

- i guess this is where the filter and remapping comes into play

RB Racing website, (hope its the right one): http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/

Maxmadness, i went to the website, so if the fi2000r is installed, does a remapping still need to be done?

Christine, you mentioned as part of the stage 1 upgrade:

- ignition module/plugs/cables - could you kindly elaborate on these and the benefits also if this portion is not added, are there any effects on the set up.

- power commander - i went to the website, but i'm kinda lost as to what is going on, how does the remapping come into play with the power commander installed?

- do the power commander and the fi2000r perform the same function?

I'm not looking to convert my sporster into a racing machine, but a good street performer.

Thank you'll so much for the info and input, as I think its pretty obvious by now, I'm a bit of an idiot with the mechanics of the setup. Is there any site there would be good info for me, somewhere I can learn the lingo and the technicalities.

Once again thanks and I'm learning alot.

@stevenbarter:

With regards to your set up of new pipes and free flowing air filter, you can stop there for now and enjoy the ride. Dont need to put PCs or ignition modules just yet as you wont be expereiencing any severe downsides. As for the bike running a bit too lean, it may run a little lean but as long as you dont ride it hard, it should be ok. In other words, you will have time to think and budget the next step.

Dyno tuning and re-mapping is not cheap and so, you would want to put the most parts on your baby that increases flow capacity before doing the re-mapping.

I am not sure about 2008 sporster models, but do check with HDS and check if your Harley comes with an ignition password for security purposes. The TSM/TSSM and ECM have "learned" passwords that synchronize the control module/s with several other components. Once you remove a component from this chain the module shuts down and won't start.

On older EFI and / or carbourated models, it is ok. Older for me means pre 2003 models. Maybe forum friends can help with this.

Changing the ignition modules, spark plugs and cables in very simple terms means you can rev harder (past 6,200 rpm) but having said that, unless you are also running forged pistons, best not to rev too hard. Throttle response will increase and top gear acceleration is much better. It will not change your sporster into a race monster, but you will enjoy a more responsive ride.

Try the pipes and air filter first. Then ride it around and see how it feels. If you dont enjoy it (i doubt that), then time to touch the other parts to better balance the ride out.

Just mho

Cheers

Thanks all for your advise and input, really appreciate it, on saturday i dropped by Sunhog at turf city. Spoke to Chris and another rider. Learnt quite a bit in one afternoon.

For exhaust, i'm considering the SE and python mufflers, does anyone have any feedback so I can make an informed choice. Hope to drop by Tony's and Sunburst one of these days and see what I can learn.

Once again, thank you

Python: i had a SE on me previous sporty. but pythons on other sporties sounded bass-ier. Sold me SEs and settled for me stock pipes thereafter. it was either python or stock for me. I have buddies who would swear by SEs. But then again it's subjective. Subject your ear-drums and choose ur thump-thump!
