IMO the Ducati 848 is an AMAZING deal. Perfect for the trackie who doesnt want to commit too much money (ok i suppose this kind of fella would buy a GSX-R but that just soooo boring!!!). Wish it had a dry clutch but otherwise you couldn't ask for more. so gorgeous in white....

The monster 696 is ridiculously overpriced. just plain ugly (ok i should qualify my statement by saying its just my opinion). I dont expect they'll sell many units of those in sg

Thanks for posting the prices. Anyone want to loan me $32,600?

Although there is a difference in price btw the two. ($8300), the difference btw the two bikes (non price wise lah) is MUCH MUCH MORE than 8K........

Bro.....

I think its a very subjective question about whether the maintenance is hard or difficult. Think about it.

I know of women who know nuts about cars, but their cars never ever gets neglected and almost always are at it's peak. Why? It's simple, they religiously follow the maintenance schedule. They know that they know nuts about the cars, but they also know that their mechanics are the ones who know their cars......so let the experts do what they are paid to do.

Having said that, maintaining a M400 (imho) is no different from any other bikes out there in the market, except you NEED to give her TLC, and remember some simple things, (like never throttle when switching on, never off the bike using the cut-off switch, etc etc etc) Basically, if the previous owner (and so should you when you do own the M400) maintain a service record of the bike, then at one glance you know when to do what and etc. B4 I bought my monster, I read this thread from page 1 to current page. Within these pages, I swear there are at least 5 instances of experts spelling out the basic maintenance schedule for the Monsters.

Next thing is almost everyone who doesnt ride a monster says its servicing is expensive. To these people, I say shuddup until you own one. If you own one and your servicing is ex, I wanna know why you never give her TLC.

Then, there are people who come up with this absolutely ridiculous story about the FC being high, parts difficult to get and expensive and etc. Again, unless you have specifically tried, and failed miserably, I cannot swallow this, as those guys who come to the KTM can testify, that about 60% of my bike is replaced with new or almost new parts for an amount which is a fraction of the cost of my bike, and I got my 8 year old bike cheap.

Does my monster give me problems? No, she gives me endless, limitless pleasure. All these for the cheap cost of TLC & petrol. However, find me a bike from brand X which doesn't give problems!!!! My point here is not about the make, but about the actual physical bike. To this, please please please choose your M400 carefully.

The thing is that MOST people see the M400 as a transition bike, b4 they go on to the usual suspects. Because of this, many don't look after it, (although we know of people who look after it soooo caringly, & then move on to other bikes......)So, it's not that the monsters give problems, its the question of the state of the physical bike when you bought it.

I'm guessing that you are asking this question, as your going to way the pros and cons of acquiring an eye-talian beauty. Your neighbour's sister-in-law's cat knows of a cousin whose ex-boyfriend teacher ever rode an eye-talian and said that its difficult & expensive and etc etc etc.

To that, I say, don't believe them, don't believe me. Open your eyes, open your ears, and find it out for yourself. (hint hint; come down for the next KTM meetup on Sunday @ 8pm I promise you wont feel left out even wo a monster YET; I can't speak for the rest, but if my bike is there, I'd let you ride her to get the feel.........) Ask many other M400 riders.......not other makes.

My last piece of 2 cents here.

If you are going to buy the M400 coz it's a DUCATI, then join the rest of the world. If you are thinking of getting the M400 coz she's about the most fun bike ever to ride (in it's class ah!!! we compare apple to apple ok!), then I'd like to have kopi with you sometime.......

:offtopic:

:btw:

I'm going to engrave this on a licence plate holder (when I make a new plate lah)......Don't copy ah!!!!

hmm maybe its subjective but 8K price difference is 25% savings, thats a lot! IMO The 848 is really a very good bike based on the reviews i've been reading and on a track with a typical rider, you really arent gonna get that much difference. With bikes like these, the rider is always the bottleneck anyway LOL. If it was me buying a trackbike i'd take the 848 or an r6 and call it a day. With the 8K savings i could get a nice set of wheels and aftermarket exhaust and then really have some fun :thumb:

and did i mention the white paintwork is just...freaking...gorgeous??:) :)

The only thing i wish the 848 had was the dry clutch but its for vanity reasons more than anything else. Other than that you've got all the looks, and still pretty damn good performance by any measure, definitely more than a mere mortal could handle unless your last name is Stoner :). An 848 with carbon fibre wheels and a full termignoni system (to make up for the price difference) would be WICKED SICK IMO and pretty much the ultimate trackbike without spending crazy money (ok maybe not-sooo-crazy-money LOL)

First of all sorry to hear that shops try to chop you because you're a girl. You won't get that from owning and servicing a ducati though, cos you can always check with us first before doing anything. Any of the guys here can roughly tell you how much changing something is gonna cost, after all we've probably done it before. Not to mention that in general ducati mechs seem a lot more honourable than a typical jap bike mechanic. lol

Anyway here are the facts: The M400 is one of the slowest, yet simplest, and most fun bike to ride in the 2A Class. If you buy one second hand, something is bound to need fixing (unless you buy a relatively well maintained & recent second hand M400 and these are getting progressively rarer). Ducatis are generally reliable BUT parts are more expensive when it's time to replace them. At the end of the day its still a ducati, not a super 4. I hate to say this, but i would NOT recommend a student getting such a bike. I was a student bike owner once, and i know what they are like, in a word, cheapskates (no offence, i was exactly like that too). And its a very dangerous thing when people with money issues own a ducati. things only go well as long as nothing goes wrong. If you have to misfortune to encounter a serious problem, or damage your bike, etc etc you will be hit very very hard. Just my 0.02c here, not trying to discourage you. If you want a fixed figure to shoot for, then i would recommend only getting a duke if you have 2K in disposable income a year to take care of wear & tear items like tyres, brake pads, clutch pads, and servicing and maybe a little modding (with a monster, no owner can resist modding). This does not count things like road tax, and insurance, or the rest of the usual stuff like erp, petrol and parking. All conservative estimates but the best i can give you with some safety margin included (enough to cover minor mishaps but not a wrecked bike of course)

Join us for the weekend meeting. You may message your number to Bash (94377467) or myself 90404477. Ducatians arent snobs..

Blackreplica,

D@mn, your bike sure looks gooood! Glad to see that you are using it more than me, hehe.

hahah its only as nice as the day i first bought it :)

Having said that though, the heavy use has taken it's toll. Esp with the 900+km it got put thru over the weekend. rear brake conked out on the uphill to genting (ok so i got a little excessive putting the bike through its paces through the uphill twisties but it was sooo fun!) and just today on the way home from work the gear selector decided to fail as well, i was stuck in 2nd gear riding to KC.....sob....Have to leave the bike there overnight. I'm going to thailand this weekend anyway so i might just leave it there till i return. Hoping my high compression pistons come in before i leave so i can get mike to put them in while i'm gone (damn things are being held by customs, probably so those %%^#(@ can charge me GST)

Guys my bike was involved in a hit and run today. A black super four licence plate number FT 1589 K hit the side of my bike at kallang macs today and my bike landed on a toyota celica. Bike damage, one broken rear view mirror, clutch lever assembly broken, tank dented (heart pain). Car damage, dents on bumper and bonnet. If any of you guys see this fella on the super four, please educate him on how to ride a bike and show proper courtesy when causing damage to other vehicles instead of running off. We are lucky there were some witnesses who took down his number. I will be going down to IDAC tomorrow for an assessment, but its highly unlikely I can claim the full amount. Just venting guys, sorry...

We are lucky there were some witnesses who took down his number. I will be going down to IDAC tomorrow for an assessment, but its highly unlikely I can claim the full amount. Just venting guys, sorry...

bro, u can make police report since u got witness. then u hire a lawyer to claim thats guy's insurance.

Hi Lina, no problem, not trying to discourage you or anything, but rather just share the facts....as ducati riders we are all always keen to have a new member join our club but at the same time it wouldnt be right if we gave you a mistaken impression about what it takes to own one. having said that though i'm happy to hear that you really really do want one, thats the first sign of a true ducatisti!

I am actually riding an M900 now, but i did used to own an M400. They are actually pretty similar except with the 900 you get a very nice jump in power, and more importantly, really massive torque which makes the bike feel really good. but they really do feel very similar and its a very nice bike to keep or hold onto while you aim for a bigger monster, depending on what you are looking for :thumb:

Guys my bike was involved in a hit and run today. A black super four licence plate number FT 1589 K hit the side of my bike at kallang macs today and my bike landed on a toyota celica. Bike damage, one broken rear view mirror, clutch lever assembly broken, tank dented (heart pain). Car damage, dents on bumper and bonnet.
