a myriad of reasons infact:

1.) acts as a crashbar incase if drop

2.) convenience of simply reaching forward, taking out what needs to be. eg: rain jacket. putting it on and go.

3.) the pillion will not be, in anyway, restricted in the space available

4.) rear signal lights would not need to be relocated

5.) much easier to gauge when squeezing thru traffic

not as all. there is plenty of clearance between the engine and the brackets. besides, it helps to funnel air towards the engine on the move
