Hi all,

I will be in the West Coast of USA for quite some time and I was wondering if it is worth it to get a bike to tour around?

Also, I was wondering if any of you guys have/had been in the USA for work/study and own a bike there?

Should I purchase a bike there from a previous owner or should I purchase from a proper reseller? Or maybe even directly from an agent? Does anyone have experience with these?

Also, for maintenance wise, are there good or well known shops or mechanics that I should look out for?

Anyone with any amounts of experience, pleas do share :) Many thanks in advance!

Cheers!

My dear, your quite some time is how long a time?

And whether have you settled your visa, your place of stay, your licence issues yet? Depending on your state of stay and your licence, there is some yes and no to your questions.

And yes, plenty of us old folks has been to USA. Some are still there.

And they are not like Singapore, where there is plenty of easy peasy cheapo bike workshops in Asia. So you have to do your own maintenance most of the time and depending on the weather you are going to be encountering, you need a garage with even certain container to keep your bike during the cold seasons.

Hello!

I'll be there for a few years at the very least. I've settled all the items that you have listed ... and wow! I must say it is really quite a hassle, but nonetheless, I'm glad that's all done! Now I'm all psyched up to see if I can ride over there. Especially along their long high ways right next to the coast!

Do you happen to know where I can find a good "motor diam" there? Maybe like a trustworthy reseller that you have experience with? Also, do you happen to know some good routes that probably, you have travelled before?

Thanks for the heads up in advance!

Cheers!

USA bike shops charge labour by the hour.. like USD$80 per hour.

Wow! That's really expensive... mmm maybe I should hook up with a bike crew there and see if I can learn anything ... might as well since I'm there :)

Thanks for the heads up!

Some states allows you to convert your class 2 licence. Some states do not. Some you will have to take their driving/riding test to get a licence. And their insurances will vary from state to state so if you are riding across states, you will most likely need the state of residence licence instead of your international driving permit on the safe side.

They are driving and riding on different side of the road from Singapore. So your first consideration should be for cars. Whether you will need snow tyres on different season. Get used to that first. (If you were my brother, I will be saying the same thing.)

And well. Heavy rain and snow, you cant ride, and you need to consider how to store your bike during those seasons.

PS. Allo. West coast is very very long hor. You think like Labrador Park to Keppel arh?

Different seasons , daylight saving, snow, hail, hard water, hells angel kinda culture, and you wanna yah yah arh?

Since you are going to be in USA for a while.

Go, get your No Criminal Certificate thingy. It should come in handy for when you want to apply maybe to join certain clubs, like weapons club or flying licence or something.

And note that best time to ride is their late spring to summer, unless you are living in expensive sunny California or Florida Miami. But while I was there, there is hail and surprisingly, snow on the day.

And because sometimes, the temperature dips, so you have frozen busted water pipes here and there. (You know....metal contracts and expand kinda thing. And bikes is made up of mostly what material?)
