hi all,

today while riding i noticed a burning smell coming from my bike. after some check myself, it seems to be coming from the radiator.

some background info:

i am riding a Cbr150r 2011. bike is going to be 2 years old soon in a few months.

engine oil change every 2000km. its been 1000km since my last change of engine oil.

never top up coolant before ( but checked and its still about 1/4 left ).

Engine temperature on the digital panel seems to be normal(3 out of 6 bar)

no foreign objects dropped near the engine

my friends say the smell seems to be some plastic burning smell. however, this smell is not the first time i encounter.

everytime when i change engine oil, there would be this smell coming from around the engine/ radiator area, but would be gone in about a day or less.

this time the smell is quite overwhelming though and i am afraid to ride it as it could get worse.

anyone have any idea what seems to be the problem? ie. radiator coolant? etc

really appreciate any help!

Sometimes when changing engine oil, the oil might drip onto the engine headers during the process.

The heat from the engine headers will evaporate the oil and cause the smell.

Usually goes away after a day or 2 of riding.

You might be able to see the oil evaporating from the heat if look at the headers, but the amount is small.

The smell is the giveaway.

1) as long you suspect something is very serious and urgent, i think your first response should be a mechanic, not this forum.

2) reference to @Constructicon reply, there was indeed once when 1 day after change engine oil, an intense oil/plastic burning smell emanated out of my radiator/engine area, plus greyish smoke rising up from beneath the bars through the dash. i also noticed a thin trail of liquid following my bike into the carpark. with engine running, i revved several times and looked carefully. immediately i spotted engine oil gushing out of the filter with every rev, which reduced to a slight trickle on closed throttle.

previous day i change engine oil, either the mechanic had not screwed on the filter properly or the filter was faulty. i called and asked them to tow back. of coz they claimed faulty oil filter, but since they didn charge me for towing and new replacement filter plus top up of same oil, i didn make a big issue.

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!

hi guys thanks for the reply. i went to hkl in the noon and found out there is a black rubber thing melted at the belly pipe of the bike. its still there now and the mechanic suggest to "ride off" the rubber. meaning to burn the rubber away slowly which takes about a few days. i dont know what the black thing is though and it has already sort of stick to the pipe, tried cleaning it only a bit come out.

mechanic says the rubber doesnt belong to the bike which makes me think what it could be zzz
