HOw old is your ride, bro? Think most 'aged' bikes have this 'pinging' sound.

Timing chain loose is one possibility, valve clearance might be another.

I intend to do a one-time valve clearance by this year. Estimated to cost arond S$600. The labour is expensive as it involves a lot of work. But bo pianz, mileage now around 75k and bike getting old liao (5yo this year).

Any buggers here done valve clearance before? How's the difference?

My bike not very old, 03 model.

It is not "pinging" sound, more like "clacking" sound of chain loosen. :sian:

It doesn't make any difference whether a motorcyclist has the right-of-way or not, the rider is the one most likely to get hurt.

Took back my bike from Hong Leong today.

According to the mechanic the abnormal noise problem was the timing chain tensioner.

They replaced my tensioner assembly, cam chain ($80), crankcase cover gasket ($13.50), oil pump cover gasket ($4.50) & tensioner case gasket ($1.50) and charge me labour charge of $120.

Total $234.87

Attached is a photo of this said chain tensioner cam.

I think the charges for labour is quite reasonable considering all the work/time/tools involved for opening up the crankcase and replacing the cam tensioner assembly, cam chain and all the related gaskets.

Although it is purely mechanical repairs, we simply do not have the tools, place and time to do such jobs ourself.

Only one thing that pissed me off is that the mechanic did not put my fairings back properly resulting in wrong overlapping and causes a gap on both sides (they are the agent for Yamaha and I expect them to be "expert" in their field).

If I bring my bike to those road side "Beng" shop, then I would expect such things to happen or even some missing fastener.

Fcuking hell. Charge so much for labour and nv do a good job? You nv complain them? One fine day I'll complain to Yamaha HQ about HL's quality and their stupid "customer cannot see" standard.

Biting on the fray of my hair, I muse upon the way to find the oasis of evermore beyond the vertical horizon, I shall join the windupdeads in owl city, neither my safetysuit nor my red jumpsuit apparatus can save me, cuz I mistook a death cab for cutie in plain white T's...

Bro, we should seriously do sthing abt this. We should start off a signed petition. All FJRians on the forum should sign a written petition and send it off to HL S'pore and also send a copy to Japan. That'll wake them out of their arrogance.

Yo bro... if its the timing chain tensioner problem y dun they just change tat? Its cheaper u know. I'm riding a Yamaha TDM900. Tis bike also facing this small problem (abnormal noise) coming from the timing chain. Usually i will buy the chain tensioner from Auto Machinery and fix it myself... very easy to install one... :thumb:

there is chances of "lost timing" by skipping the step of "topping".

& yet FJR's tensioner hiding very well to avoid we from DIY. :sian:

thats the SOP of HL changing all the above mentioned parts to complete the job which outside mechcanic will sure bypass.
