I use my horn only when ABSOLUTELY needed because i cant stand unnecessary noise and noisy exhaust is one form of unnecessary noise. If you like noise, keep it on the race tracks. :box:

I had to say this.

Thanks to you, the harley bugger with the very loud pipe, blowing and wacking the pipes to it's loudest decibel it can get.

YOU SCARE THE SHITT OUTTA MY LITTLE 4 MONTHS OLD BABY. I HOPE, SOME 10 WHEELER WILL GO PASS YOU AND BLOW THE AIRHORN RIGHT INTO YOUR EARS AND PUNCTURE YOUR EARDRUMS ONEDAY.

Loud pipes saves lives? Ya right...Next time you blow your loud pipe, think of others. It may save your life (provided you dun scare the driver to swerve into your direction and killing you in the 1st place), think of the old folks, the little children, and the weak hearted people using the pavement where you zoom pass happily!!!

Maybe your dream is to grow old, and get scared to death by a loud pipe passing you by as you happily (and slowly) take a peaceful slow healthy walk along the pavement. I dont know. Hope your dream comes thru, and mine above as well.

Interesting topic. I think the key here is moderation & being responsible.

"Tong" 2 stroker is in my view is way overboard as even when in "legal" mode

its loud enuff.

I do agree that exhaust volume does help drivers in front notice me.

I squeez between lane 1 & 2 daily just like many others to & from work.

Every now & then, some driver will swerve out causing me to jam the breaks...

When I was riding a TZR125 (legal pipe) the above does not happen as often as when I ride my subsequent FZ150. (4 stroke). Using "white headlamp" also helps in increasing your presense.

Speaking for myself, when i hear a loud zorst note coming behind me...I usually just stay in my lane ...maintain my speed & wait for him/her to pass. I guess some car drivers may react the same way too. A loud zorst from the back usually gives one the impression that the fella behind is coming fast & furious. So instintively I avoid changes to my lane or speed to avoid a potential accident.

So wat happens when every one uses a loud pipe?

I would think that in this case loudness cant help much anymore since all are loud, no one would stand out.

What I support is legal after market pipes. Whereby its fruity enuff to get attention but not deafening.

Also since usually such legal pipes often cost an arm or leg, quite unlikely we will see a situation whereby everyone's got a after mart zorst so the "effect is lost"

Finally, it all boils down to retaint. e.g when going home at residential areas, keep the rpm

Hmm so you prefer people riding bikes with loud pipes below you car park warming up engine and reving them while you are asleep after a hard days work?

Or do you prefer while you are watching TV and someone's wedding/funeral with a parade of poud pipes bike/cars riding pass your window.

Or you prefer just sitting there tian mi mi with your spouse with lots of loud pipes traffic destroying all the atmospher.

I know i won't want that.

This is not true. Sound travels in all directions.

It is true that less waves travel forward because of the pipe's alighment. But as long as you are travelling slower than the speed of sound, the sound waves produced by the loud pipe behind you can catch up with you.( I think so far only concordes can create a sonic boom) The only issue is how much energy is left when it reaches you; the higher the energy, the more noise you will be able to hear.

I have been notified of bikers coming from behind many times on the expressway. Usually its loud 2 strokers. I agree that they let drivers know they are coming. But whether they save lives, I have absolutely no idea.

Even if they really do save lives, we must look within the context of Singapore to decide if its suitable in our country.

Sound actually travels upwards faster.

Personally I think Loud Pipes creates attention. And it's not only for the drivers, but for everyone you ride passed. And of coz naturally ppl will know of your presence on the road, thus it may help in preventing accidents.

However, the question I will like to ask is: How loud is loud? And what kind of decibels are we talking abt here? And who can set the limits or standard? And if a standard have been set, can everyone be satisfied with that standard?

I personally ride a cruiser, and I think that Long Bass Note pipes are nice, of coz it will be better if it's loud, however not to the point that it will cause disturbance to the fellow neighbours.

Therefore my suggestion is to have a panel from LTA to look into this matter as to how many more decibels can we in singapore all raise and at the same time that it will not cause a nusiance to the general public.

sorry but I'm not your game boy.

well done dookie! :thumb: you sure do still remembered your science. anyway, legalising 'loud pipes save lives' wouldn't work in sillypore coz we are living too near to each other, the mentality... self centered mindset... stress disorder... work too hard and no play... all are the factors and its been label as 'anti social' many times already. can you image when i push my sofa once too many times the uncle from downstair will come up and COMPLAIN!?!? o_O :sian: :faint:

HAHAHAHA!!!

well said!!:cheer:

when i used to ride a sp, i would switch off my engine and roll into the carpark. saves a pathetic amount of gas and helps to keep the noise down too. if only the idiot children upstairs would be as considerate when they run around screaming and stamping their feet on my ceiling

No it doesn't, the speed of sound is a constant, regardless of the direction it travels in.

I have a collegue who was very angry of 1 motorcyclist, a 2-stroke rider who likes whacking throttle when warming up his bike. Some more the pipe is mod. Super loud. :giddy:

U should know that most residential area are equipped with multi-storey carpark, very close to neighbouring flats and this joker did it early in the morning.

Worst, he even have a habit of gunning this bike at high rpm WITHIN the Carpark before he goes off to work. Well his habit did create of attention.

But is so sickening that my collegue has the guts to take law in his own hands. He identified that joker's bike and purposely stuff some gum like stuff to jam that pipe.

And he never hear that joker's bike from there on :cheer:

Loud pipe creates attention, wanted or unwanted but definately not in any safety aspects. An inexperience driver can still hurt you on the road even he is aware of ur presence because of loud pipes.

There is no benchmark on "loudness ", but there is aways a noise tolerance level for humans. Trying to test it, then don't expect something good in return.

Harley scares me off my lane.

And then I become exposed to the danger of vehicles knocking into me from behind.

No, loud pipes don't save lives.

They kill.

hahaha i think the difference between legal and non legal pipe is juz between whether the manufacturer got pay money to lta anot haha

thats right, lta ban all aftermarket pipes for many years till lately they relax the regulations and accept those loud pipes which are approved in ang moh countries... but still have to go throught their test and approve by them. just to play safe. *silent kills*

Loud pipes do not necessarily save lives, but they are definitely VERY annoying. Even a legal endcan on a 600 revved to 12k rpm can be very jarring. And don't even mention the "legal" Harleys. I hate 'em.

If you want protection, get full face helmet, riding jacket and boots, and stop complaining. Not everyone appreciates the sound of a bike exhaust, and even many seasoned bikers find loud pipes annoying! What would you think if you have a baby boy who gets woken up in the middle of the night by some inconsiderate motherfarker who revs his engine downstairs?

Just a thought, considering that this is "Rally Point", a place where bikers voice issues that should be brought to the attention of the general public.

If even bikers cannot agree on this issue, how are we even going to convince anyone else, least of all the government?

hahaha... good comment. :thumb: maybe the lta withdraw the new regulation on aftermarket pipes and ban it all together for good... what do you think  imho, guess lta missunderstood biker's passion or was it some motorcyclist are just... motorist.
