Benson, what is varnel kit and piggybag? what it use for?

Varnel kit = 2 steel needle/pole to replace the oem ones in the 2 front cylinders, oem is longer, varnel kit is shorter. purpose is for faster throttle response. Tp eliminate the flat spot in the earlier rev

Piggybag = stock cdi cut rpm at 14700. hrc allows u to rev till 15250. Piggybag overide stock cdi n hrc. Onli risk is blowin ur pistons.

Rev accordinli.....

If u r interseted, look for the "Made in Japan" piggybag which is onli meant for RVF.

Outside shld be sellin ard 95 to 110. If iu r interested, u can pm me. I'm orderin wid my frend. 1 for 70.

Hi Guys , just shared info wif u all... :cheeky: :cheeky: :cheeky:

Speedometers & Speed limiters; issues and workarounds.

Like the VFR400 before it, the RVF400 features a road speed limiting system. Consisting of a speedometer mounted mechanism, and some circuitry (programming?) in the Ignition Control Unit, the system limits the speed of the bike to around 180kmh. If an attempt is made to disable the system by simply disconnecting the speedo circuitry, the system will cause a misfire (drastically alters ignition timing) above about 5000rpm. The bike remains rideable, but does not produce anything like full power.

There are a number of options in circumventing this system, however all (except perhaps one) have problems associated with them. These methods and associated problems are outlined below.

1) Official HRC Ignition Control Unit.

This is a great way to go if you have the money and can get your hands on one. Also requires a complete HRC wiring loom, which saves some weight and electrical complexity. Installation of this system is covered in section 13 of this manual. The HRC kit removes the 180kmh speed limit without introducing the 5000rpm ignition misfire, and no doubt provides performance optimised ignition timing for race use. This system unfortunately cannot be used in conjunction with a standard wiring loom, which makes it unsuitable for a bike doing dual duty (road and track). It is also very difficult and expensive to obtain. The optimum way to go for a race-only bike.

2) Modify the Mechanism in the Speedometer.

For years, this has been the favourite way to enable higher road speeds on VRF and RVF 400's. Essentially, it involves disassembly of the speedo unit and the bending of an electrical contactor attached to the mechanism. Details on carrying out this modification can be found on several VFR/RVF400 websites. This is a reasonable method for de-restricting road going VFR/RVFs, but requires that the speedo be mounted to the bike and electrically connected. For race bikes, where a speedo isn't needed (or wanted), this is not an optimal solution. There is also a risk of damaging the speedo housing or mechanism when disassembling it. However, it is cheap. The only cost being the time to do the work. (i.e. free, for the home mechanic)

3) Disconnect the speedo drive cable.

A great solution for a road bike going on a track day. Simple, free of cost, and on the track a functioning speedometer is an unnecessary distraction anyway. Simply disconnect the drive cable from the back of the speedometer, or optionally disconnect from the gearbox end as well and remove completely. Unsuitable for road riding, however.

4) Derestricter 'Black Box'.

A small 'black box' which plugs into the standard wiring loom in place of the circuitry inside the speedometer. A very flexible solution, as it does not require the presence of the speedometer. There are two ways to go here; aftermarket or home-brew. An aftermarket unit is an easy, plug in and clip/tie/bolt it on arrangement, but not cheap or necessarily easy to get. The home-brew method requires that you assemble your own using the circuit board removed from a standard speedometer. This method is functionally equivalent to the aftermarket method, but requires disassembly and partial distruction of the speedometer housing. There is a risk of damage to the circuitry whilst removing it from the speedometer, and also in use. The circuit is fragile, and there have beeen cases where these have been damaged in race crashes, despite being securely mounted in a plastic casing. This is the best solution if you can afford to buy one, or have the have the time, patience and skill to assemble your own. It is also the only realistic and cost-effective solution for anyone racing a VFR400 on a budget.

5) The "Secret Modification"

Owners of RVF400s are blessed with a very simple, cheap and complete solution to the speed restriction problem. It does not require the presence of the speedometer, or any of the electronics contained within it, so the instrument cluster can be removed and reinstalled at will. Neither does not require an expensive 'black box' derestricter.

*PLEASE NOTE*

This procedure does NOT apply to VFR400 (NC30), and is only suitable for RVF400 (NC35). Its long-term reliability is unproven. It may cause irrepairable damage to the wiring loom, ignition system and Ignition Control Unit. It is far more likely to work faultlessly for years.

However, use at your own risk.

Within the RVF400 wiring loom, there is an orange wire with a blue stripe. This is the speed restricter control line, and it runs from the speedometer to the Ignition Control Unit. Below indicated speeds of 180kmh, and with the speedometer connected to the wiring harness, this wire has 12v applied to it. If the speedometer is electrically disconnected, or the speedometer indicates a speed in excess of approximately 180kmh, this wire is earthed (or goes open circuit), and thus has 0v is applied. To disable speed restriction, with or without the speedometer connected, apply 12v to this wire at all times the ignition is on.

It can be achieved thus:

Make sure the ignition master (key) is switched off.

Locate the rubber boot behind the instrument cluster. It may be necessary to remove the fairing to gain access.

Within this boot is a connector with 4 wires going into each side, one pair of which is the all-important orange/blue wire. On the opposite side of the connector to the instrument cluster, peel back the insulation tape cut the orange/blue wire.

Join this to one of the brown/white wires next to it by stripping a short section of both wires, and soldering a 1500 ohm (also known as 1.5k or 1k5) resistor between them.

This should be a 1% tolerence, 0.25 watt resistor, and can be purchased from an electronic component supplier for a few cents.

Take care to not cut through the brown/white wire when stripping it, as it provides power to other gauges and warning lights in the instrument cluster.

Once soldered, insulate the joint with electrical tape.

It's that simple... The bike can now be run with or without the speedometer, and will not experience any problems with the speed limiter.
