To make the bike more appealing to a wide range of riders the Bandit's seat can be raised by 20mm from 770mm to 790mm and the bars can go up 10mm. The tank is slightly narrower too, making it even easier for short-arses to reach the ground, and for the more cautious rider the Bandit now also comes with ABS as an optional extra.

Which leaves the styling. Despite the new Bandit looking virtually identical to the old one it has new clocks, a pointy mudguard and new-style seat. The faired one gets a new fairing and I think there was also something about new indicators and tail light, but by this point my attention was dwindling.

To go with the refined image the clocks have lost their tacky plasti-chrome look, and the speedo is now a digital display with sensible things like fuel gauge, clock and speed all there for your visual pleasure. Get it going and the first surprise is how good the fuel-injection is with none of the usual jerkiness or snatch that usually accompanies injectors. Hang on a second, there's a reason for this. The Bandit has carbs. I tell you, these carb things could really catch on because they are brilliant. It's a refreshing change to ride a bike once again with them fitted as they are so much better than injectors, even the current ones.

There's no snatch going from a closed to open throttle or vice versa, no jerkiness and all-in-all the fuelling is perfect. Damn those EU idiots and their emissions laws for killing carbs off! Although the smooth delivery could be down to the engine as well.

Accelerate on the CBF600 and it feels like the engine is restricted as it strains to build speed, but there is nothing of this about the Bandit. You just get silky acceleration with a light clutch action and smooth gearbox.

- 2005 Suzuki Bandit 650

New for 2005

It's Criminal. The New 650cc Bandit.

It is no wonder that the Suzuki Bandit 650 is set to established itself as one of the most popular middleweight motorcycles in its class. Sporting a smooth, efficient, inline four-cylinder engine, comfortable ergonomics, convenient handling and sporty styling. The Bandit is sure to steal you from the daily grind.

The new styled Bandit, with adjustable handlebars and seat height, delivers the goods in a lighter overall package. Ready for whatever it is you want to do, be it a quick run to the corner store, or a commute to work or school. The larger 656cc engine delivers more power and torque in the low-rpm and middle-rpm ranges used in the real world, with smoother power delivery, better throttle response and stronger roll-on acceleration than other middleweights.

The two most basic components of a motorcycle are the engine and the frame, and the Bandit leave both those components exposed for admiration. The Bandit 650S is fitted with a compact, more stylish half faring; wind tunnel testing allowed precise refinement in the shape of the trailing edges of the fairing, reducing turbulence and making the fairing more effective. The frame tubes and side covers are tucked in, making the Bandit narrower and in turn making it easier for the rider to reach the ground. The compact tailsection makes it easier to mount optional saddlebags. The tank holds 20-liter of fuel, the most in its class.

Except the old fzs600 -22L

Seat height can be adjusted by 20mm (0.8 inches), from 770 to 790mm (30.3 to 31.1 inches), using a clever spacer system. Handlebar height is also adjustable, by 10mm (0.4 inches), and in line with it the handlebars reach back closer to the rider. The adjustment systems allow each rider to tailor the Bandit 650 to themselves. The fully-floating 290mm (11.4 inches) dual front brake discs have new, simpler-and-lighter carriers, with 2-piston calipers. The single 240mm (9.4 inches) rear brake disc works with a more compact, lighter 2-piston caliper.

The Bandit carries an analog tachometer and an LCD digital display for speedometer/odometer/tripmeter/fuel gauge/clock functions. LED lights set below the face of the LCD indicate neutral position, oil pressure and high beam, with LED turn signal indicator lights positioned underneath and between the instrument faces.

Looking good even standing still, a centerstand and sidestand are standard equipment.

The 2005 Bandit 650 has more of everything that made the original Bandit the most popular Suzuki middleweights ever built. So much more that the competitors think it s criminal.
