That's very often. I only use it if there is a need. Will run the "analyse" option first and see what they recommend.

it depends on what OS you're in.... but i haven been doing defrags since win98 has been phased out... somehow the file management gets better with the newer OS versions

Hard disks are by far the slowest component in your computer. CPU and memory work much faster than hard disks because they do not have moving parts. Therefore fragmented disks often become a bottleneck of the system performance.

Besides causing slowdowns, fragmentation makes the hard drive disk heads move frequently when reading files which leads to freeze-ups and system crashes. It is important to keep your disks defragmented and optimized as much as possible.Disk fragmentation leads to system slowdowns, PC crashes, slow startup and shutdown and sometimes to

the above is the textbook / sales product description of defrag products..

nevertheless, its technically correct... however, the answer to the TS's question of.. "how frequent?" is debatable...

schedule it once a month... along side with your virus scans and spyware... should be sufficient...

Mark,

I know you have a game in your system with lots of big-sized files. Therefore, like what other people here have suggested, doing disk-defrags with a month's interval or more in between should be fine for your system, never lesser though.

But be prepared to leave it overnight for it to complete.
