i have this habit too....

however... wat's really considered too close?

if a car really seems like its not stopping, will u really throttle and move when its already red light..?

this is a question that i asked myself.. still not sure of how to react ?? :cheeky:

Generally, the problem of being run down from the back

is when we are the 1st to stop at the Lights.

A quick scan at the mirrors will tell u if there's anyone comin up fast.

Being in gear will let u pull off immediately if necessary.

Why the vehicle not stopping... intoxicated, on hand phone,

distracted by.., poor vision....

Whether u continue across or to the side...

Will depend on the traffic.

But building your awareness will give us a fighting chance of surviving.

Shared to me by a fellow biker:

Was riding on the left lane North-South Highway.

A car came from behind and ram into him...

Why the driver didn't see him? He didn't find out.

Cos he was rolling on the road.

Just abrasion... he survived.

A constant scan is important.

Be well aware of the traffic around us.

Quote "Do direct your bike/driver friends to this thread. Results are not always effective, some simply don't take such a keen interest on safety, or have experienced less "trauma" etc etc.. But i'll like to think that if you direct 10 bike friends and only 3 change his riding style/habit/attitude, maybe 1 will be saved from an accident, or save his skin when he takes a fall.

Will you ever know? Maybe not.

But its not about why you should do it, if you do. Its why not? "

Well Said Czh...

thks gentlemen for all your contributions.

It's a great plus towards the safety of our riders. Yeah!

Cycling

Something I do quite often & enjoy doing.

But I always tell myself that a cyclist has no rights.

When I am turning at a junction... cars will not give way to me.

And when I am riding on the walkway... I give way to the pedestrians.

My personal preference will be on walkway & park connectors.

On the extreme left of the roads if I have to be on the main rd...

and hope the vehicles that zoom pass me does not hit me.

The bus lanes will fit a SBS bus with very little allowance for the cyclist.

So me bite my nails cos they zoom real close. Too close for comfort.

Being Highly Visible is an important safety factor with cyclist.

So wear something bright, flashing red behind & whites infront.

I had seen a bunch of cyclist occupying the left lane of the Fly Over West Coast Expressway in staggered formation early morning when there hardly any traffic.

Firstly they should not be on express ways cos the relative speed it just

too great.

I had to do a quick filter right to avoid them. It was a bend.

The closure rate was too quick and I did not expect them to be there.

Riding in a group... I feel is best done single file on the left of rd.

The other favorite location is a bunch of cyclist along North Bouna Vista filtering thru the heavy morn traffic. Just feels it not worth the risk.

I know the cyclist wants their rights on the road...

Me... I want to stay alive & enjoy my ride.

Great educational pictures!

Went up Frasers hill over the weekend with the Kruzers. It was my first ever trip up north. (If petrol trips to GP esso is not counted) :cheeky:

Now i know why ppl are addicted to the roads up north. The scenery was beautiful, the roads were great and the group riding experience so very valuable.

Just want to add something for the rest who cycle on the roads - Please understand that it is illegal to cycle on the expressway. It is also too dangerous. Please do not risk your life there.

On the main roads - Okay. In fact, according to the law cyclist are supposed to cycle on the roads instead of pedestrian walkways (but I still cycle on walkways lah cos safer) :cheeky:

So for those who lives far from east coast but likes to go cycling there (my situation), please refer to the Singapore map or go to StreetDirectory.com.sg and plan your route along major roads. Please do not take the expressways!

STREET SMART TIP OF THE DAY #161

FOUR WHEELS TWO WHEELS

Whenever u trail behind a car...

Just remind yourself that he has 4 & we have 2.

And if u keep the the gap similar to all the cars ahead...

We may just not have enough distance to prevent us from

skidding when someone slams on the brakes infront.

Even on dry days I sometime do get caught out

& braking hard...

barely miss hitting the car infront.

So remember...

Distance Is Our Great Protector!

Increase It! No premiums required.

And filtering between lanes means braking on those slippery white lines.

Minding Our Own Business

is sad to say... Not Enough.

Being aware of the traffic in our vicinity is Crucial.

Reading the body language of drivers, bikers & pedestrain

gives us a prior warnings of their path & preciding actions.

Our Business is not to cross path.

And it can be done discretly...

With an inward smile, deep within...

that it could had been fatal...

If not correctly read.

It's Business as usual.

The Business of Staying Alive

Have a Nice day...

- Slow down to a spd that u can take avoiding actions or Stop is gd

- Flashing or a Friendly Horn is for him to know u are coming.

- Riding with a big vehicle on your left will give some protection.

Slow down !!!

Position yourself and the driver at the right turning pocket can see you !!!

Dont ride too fast can liao. Do safety checks. I have been driving normally day n night time. Motorists Cars n Bikers tend to do last min action. Without knowing behind situation behind, if the vehicles are too close behind them. Especially Taxis. Damn they are of the most dangerous on the road. Not all, but most of them.

Happy Brake infront without signal, Happy Change lane without signal just to pick up a customer.

Hi Czh... One way is to convert it to jpeg format.

Size it to 800x600 or below...

Tailgating:

Cute video...

Best is to get out of his way...

That's probably why he's tailgating...

cos the wants u to get out of his way

Stay clear from drivers with this kinda of attitude

Have a Nice day..

:cheer:  :bounce:

Interesting Obseration:

Had seen this practice of cup kia fellowing extremely

close to Containers lorries.

Wet & dry days.

Don't really understands why...

Perhaps to keep dry on wet days

And to save fuel with the suction created by the 40footers Lorries.

:cheeky:

Either way...

If the Lorry brakes to avoid a piece of debris on the highway...

It will be the end for the Kup Kia...

And the driver of the lorry will not know that a bike had smashed

into it's rear.

Quoting DSP Simon from the most recent meetup with the TP:

"When I ride on the road, I'm prepared to get bullied"

I think riders should adopt this kind of mentality to stay level minded and prepared for more possible dangers. IMO, that's very good advice.

Posted

I really don't anyone should bully us...

But it is wise to keep out of the way of drivers/riders with

poor attitude.

Road bullies get convicted in our court of law...

And the Rotan comes as a complete package. Haha..

I guess what Simon means is to be humble.

And not get into a confrontation with the bad road users...

That's fine.

Along the way, as we cruise to accident free riding for a period of time, we sometimes forget the fraility of the human body, of the fear that we used to experienced when we were still green on the road. As we progress and learn more safer riding skills, its sometimes worthwhile reviewing that fear and facing it.

This one made my b*%$# drop. Please do not watch it after a full meal.

For such high speed accidents, and those which riding jackets and full face helmets cannot save a rider, do say a little prayer regardless of your religion. Sometimes luck plays a part in the outcome of accidents. For those that we can avoid, we try to stay alive.

What i find disturbing is the part where 3 riders get struck down from behind by a car approaching at slightly faster speed. It could just appear in your rear mirror like a tailgater coming close. Until it strikes the first one. The front rider has an outside chance of pulling away. He seemed to be riding a big bike, but i guess it happened so quickly he didn't notice the car. When he heard the first impact, it was probabaly too little time to pull away too. With full riding gear, he will probabaly survive since it does not appear he took a direct hit. As for the biker which got hit by a car approaching from intersection, if he slowed down in time, he could have escaped. Riding jacket and FF may not save a fracture on his leg, but he could have survive because his body did not take a direct blow, and his FF may cushion the landing on the floor, if it did not fly off.

Ride safe my friends, for the most seemingly harmless situations can often escalate out of control in a split second.

This one is about the same video. I only want to point out at 1.04 the pedestrian that got hit really was a case of bad luck. But next time when we cross the roads we know where to look. I think he actually had a chance of survival if he happened to be looking in the right direction. But it never occured to me that oncoming vehicle hitting vehicle that beats red light will go into the path of pedestrian accurately. Perhaps because i never seen such accidents first hand.

I hope i didn't spoil too many appetites.
