some sand paper. rj brand spray dry quite fast. buy lots of paint and laquer. laquer only when got sun in order to obtain shine.

if ur bike already got laquer, sand and make rough first. else the paint wont stick properly.

this is a pic of my gal's old SP. diy spray

I agreed with U. Unless we using those commerical sanding tools, fast and better sanding job. :cheeky:

Hello people, i'm now respraying my sp to white too!

basically i've sanded off the lacquer with 320 sandpaper and my cracked fairing was repaired and filled with epoxy putty.

i'm planning to use 220 sandpaper to smoothen down the putty before spraying.

till now i've only done a basic coat of white pain, haven sand down and spraying clear coat yet.

exams coming soon so won't be doing it until april!

i bought RJ white paint for $3.50 and bosny spray clear lacquer for $4 bucks

sandpaper cost about 20 to 50 cents depending whether the uncle wanna tok u ot not! haha

i have some pics but have no idea how to post though.

hope my 2 cents help!

nice finish

what lacquer did u use?

anyway does the shine last? or it requires polish + waxing every now and then to maintain the glossy effect?

does the paint crack internally after sometime?

cause i DIY my front fork w/ partial spray can paint + wall paint :cheeky: ended up the painted surface crack after a few mths

hi....juz something to note nothing against you guys doin it D.I.Y however do remember spraycans are ACRYLIC base..acrylic base paints are technology way pass the era liao...10-20 yrs ago.. ... of course you can get a decent paintjob with it...and yeah LACQUER in this case is not a "PROTECTIVE" layer. :D it is simply CLEAR PAINT..so SURPRISE! you are not actually protecting your paint at all! .... normal experiences after a couple of months spraycan masterpieces will start to show signs of wear and tear..cracks start to appear..etc...ULTIMATE nitemare! ............. TODAY.... technology has enable us to use 2K polyurethene paint..which has more "flex" to allow expansion and compression of items.... and 2K clear coat are hi-gloss and able to POLISH! yes...2k are so-called automotive paint. :D

so if you D.I.Y masterpiece is making you feel proud...good! but beware of all the above mentioned side effects....juz in case all the hardwork go down the drain.

MY opinion to do a paintjob that can save you some $$.:

spray design with spraycan.THEN get it lacquered by professionals...(will cost abit) but at least you know it will last longer.

acrylic spraycans are for hobbyist..and mainly indoor applications (although some indicate the picture of motorbikes on the can) still its not suitable for prolonged outdoor usage...especially the wheather like singapore :D

ppl got tell me b4..hey the spraycan lacquer SHINY mah! i dun see any side effects.. some even "cleverly" devise a method... stay under HOT noon sun..spray THIN layers of lacquer..slowly "building" up the shine..YES it will be glossy! without a doubt! :D BUT!...BUT.........are you aware that you are actually thickening the "clear paint?" hahaha so after some months when i see him his face very "smelly"...why? simple...thin paint hairline cracks...thick paint huge cracks...around the width of my INDEX finger!...serious..hahaha you can see the whole network of ECP/PIE/AYE/TPE/SLE/BKE on the bike...in the end...lan lan spend to get it done professionally. :D some $$ can try to save..some $$ dun bother trying to save. cos you will end up spending more then you expect!

go figure.

so what kind of paint should i go for ??? intend to spray my belly pan ...plz recommend brand/price

just to share,

i've been diy re-spraying parts of my bike also. Some parts i sandpapered, some parts i did not. The weird thing is, those parts which i've sandpapered painstakingly started to show cracks, but those that i did not are still smooth. Maybe its because the "sprayed over directly" area is quite small compared to those i sanded off, so didn't crack, i don't know.

So nowadays i don't bother to sand off the old paint, also scared no strength to pcc later on...so i just wrap the parts in newspaper which i want to spray and do directly over 'em.

so is sanding really a must? im not too sure myself

p.s not trying to make pple lazy over here

bro all spraycans on the shelf are the SAME...only difference is NOZZLE consistency...some give you a wide spray area...some narrower..some spray halfway JAM!....personally i recommend pylox / RJ..spray cans costs ard 3.50-4.50 generally. :D

hi..sanding is IMPORTANT in spray painting...sanding "unevens" paint surface in order for new paint to adhere onto the existing paint. the reason why some parts start to crack is due to: do you realise after sanding you need to spray primer before color? :D go look for it its called GREY PRIMER. so lets say you wanna spray red...sand the thing down with coarse grain sand paper..start from 240..work your way to 800..then finish with 1000-1200 (WITH WATER) you dun dry sand paintjobs :D spray primer grey..sand down(lightly with 1000)....spray WHITE (why?..becos red will not stand out from grey!) its call the basecoat...sand down lightly also...then finally red paint goes on the item..after that sand down lightly as well....then finish with whatever "LACQUER" you deem suitable..FINITTO!

the reason why the NON sanded areas are smooth are due to:

-in the 1st place the surface was smooth..cos of factory lacquer finish.

-ok this is the best part!....it may be smooth and not crack..but due to the surface not treated means paint actually did not adhere to existing surface properly! so maybe you can try to wait for the WHOLE CHUNK OF PAINT..to..PEEEELLL off. :D leaving the old paintjob still SHINY

p.s :sanding will train your wrist more..so the pcc issue should be in an advantage! :thumb:

Another good guide. Quite detail with pics but its done on a PC casing.

Should be able to give same result too as it's tested on metal and plastic.

The 3M rubbing compoud seen at Causeway Point Homefix for $20. Might be able to get chaper from other DIY shops.

Recently resprayed my 125Z with the help of a few friends. I used Nippon Pylox spray paints, and the results were excellent.

Used #309 Sunrise Yellow, Black and lacquer. Total about 10 cans in all for 2 coats of yellow, 2 coats of lacquer, 2 coats of black (on the black parts lah!)...

You gotta be patient and must do the work in the daytime, when it's hot and sunny. Don't try to spray the bike at night, the paint will look cloudy.

I spent a lot of time sanding down the parts with sandpaper, from grades 400 all the way to 1000. Took me and friends about 3 days in all.

IMO this kind of project is really interesting to do. You get to be with your bike more, and when you see it taking the correct colour scheme with you hard work you sayang your bike even more!

Take a look at the pics below, this is the spraying process. Full bike pics will be posted soon...
