I've been having problems with my dvd-rom drive. Actually this problem has been on and off since i got the pc, but since i didn't use it much i never really bothered.

When i first startup the pc, usually the drive is not recognised. Can't find it listed in windows explorer at all. After restarting then it'll show up, along with the disc inside. Now it's getting worse, after restarting sometimes still won't show up. Installing software when changing discs will hang the whole pc.

Anyone has any idea what the problem might be?

An intermittent problem like this is hard to tackle, unless you go the physical way of troubleshooting it first.

Without much further ado, I'd recommend opening up the computer (or having a trained PC mechanic to do so). The things that need to be checked are:

(Listed in order of importance, "1" being most important)

  1. The ATX power plug supplying power to the DVD-ROM - Is it securely fastened?
  2. The IDE/SATA data cable - Is that also securely fastened to it?
  3. Analysis of how the DVD-ROM is connected (or daisy-chained) inside your computer, and whether the jumper clips have been set properly to reflect how your DVD-ROM is connected inside your comp.
  4. (If the computer's custom-made) Whether the power supply unit's Wattage power rating can take the maximum amount of devices already installed inside your PC

This list may be exhaustive, but do supply some first hand troubleshooting steps to begin pinpointing the source of the problem.
