Easy... itune, VLC player and design software AND graphic intensive games (like RON, FEAR, FF) requires processor to operate at a much higher level.. when your processor are heavy loaded.. it generally heated up.. and fan starts to blow loud when the interior system gets heated up.. its actually a normal issue... the reason why when the first yr of pc (normally) doesnt occur this kind of situation is bcos the pc has not fully loaded with mp3s, games, folders and other stuffs.. as yrs goes by, your pc will get loaded by the stuff you have in your HD, and all these takes RAM to run even when its not loaded..

you have several options to do:

1) change to a much better CPU casing with better fan or cooling system

2) upgrade your overall system.. afterall 3 yrs old is consider old... i do upgrade every 9mths to 1 yr (also bcos i do design for a living & gaming)

3) you can simply ignore it, its not a serious issue.. or use winamp instead of itune cos its much a lesser ram intensive program.

4) try to download "ACE UTILITES" its helps you clear up unecessary files on drives that may hinders your startup, loading and overall performance.

This is from my years of self- build PCs knowledge for my reference :)

Hope my info helps..

cheers!

Gracie

thanks alot for the advice.. i would very much like to upgrade the CPU, but it's still under warranty.. so watever parts spoil i just call Dell to change.. hahaha :cheeky:

if the casing fan spoil, the cpu & hard disk sure overheat. Better start to backup yr important stuff to external hard disk or thumb drive.

Since yrs still under warranty, not much you can do , unless u want to bring the CPU casing to the Dell & complain , and hopefully they replace the casing fan with new one.

Mine's worse:

The power supply fan buzzes noisily when the whole unit is turned on...Somehow the fan bearings are dirty and I can't even find a way to dismantle the fan..

Last Wednesday nite, my CPU fan went noisy. Wasn't any loose cables that got into the way or even the dust from the heatsink ('cos I went to clean both heatsink and fan but still noisy. Took 3 cotton balls to clean both). In the end, I bought a new fan last Saturday for HK$25 (S$4.50) and it's quiet again.

Problem with the new fan is there is no 4th pin on the plug. The 4th pin monitors the fan speed, I think, 'cos according to the mainboard manual, the 4th pin is the CPU fan PWM. I had to disable the fan monitoring in the BIOS for the computer to boot up normal.

PWM probably stand for pulse width modulation. For fans that support PWM, it means the system can increase the fan speed when it's heating up, or moderate speed when system load is low (hence quieter).

Not sure of the fan you bought, but fans will typically come in 2-pins (GND, +12v) or 3-pin (GND, +12v, SENSE). 4-pins (GND, +12v, SENSE, PWM) I think not so common?

Make sure you're correctly matching the 3-pin connector of the fan to the 4-pin connector of the mobo (fan GND to mobo GND). One reason I can think of for why it can't boot properly might be the mismatch of the fan I/O pins.

Mismatch of the pins? Quite possible....

Try switching the fan header around? I've drawn out the possible mismatches, seems like got one possible "wrong" config that might still run the fan.

Mobo

GND | +12v | SENSE | PWM

SENSE | +12v | GND | ---

Fan (pins alignment flipped)

By turning off the fan monitoring, the SENSE pin on the mobo most likely is grounded, effectively turning it into GND | +12v | GND | PWM. Since the +12v and "GND" matches the fan +12v and GND, the fan runs! I'm just speculating lah...

Check to confirm that the black wire (typical GND color) of the fan matches the GND pin on the mobo?

It's not the pins. I forgot to remove a CD from the DVD drive. You know when the BIOS checks the bootable drive before booting up? Well, apparently the DVD drive was read, tried to boot up the non-bootable disc and hung. Now no problems.

Mystery solved...! but then why would disabling fan monitoring make it able to boot...? o_O

'cos at start up, the BIOS will prompt and give the option of going to Setup or continue. Might as well disable the fan monitoring until I can get a fan with 4 pins.

New fan broke when I was cleaning it. Somemore I fixed it upside down and it got ruined. Went to Sham Shui Po to get a new fan and it's cheaper. HK$10 (about S$1.80). Big, quiet and it's Asus. I think the fan's a 2nd one, but does the job.
