My dad's can speak Hokkien and Cantonese, but my Chinese dialect descent is Cantonese.

However, I primarily speak English at home and at work, and to top it all off with some years of being in the United States, I found Cantonese a bit difficult to pick up so my sketchy Canto is usually from overhearing the occasional conversations between my grandmother and my Dad.

Just like my grandmother said, zhung man yao gong dong wah hai 差唔多 mah...Man man hok loh. :p

the dialect is suppose to be very refine. it is the only dialect that has a corresponding pronunciation to every mandarin word and more, that's why the HK songs' lyrics in chinese that cannot really correspond to their spoken language. some cantonese words have very ancient chinese root.

企 - kei, meaning stand.

渠 - koei, means you.

咸(巴冷)- ham pa lang, means all, especially the word ham, was used in Wen yan wen

èµ° - chow. Unike the mandarin version, this means run. However, in ancient chinese, this is used as run as well.

by the way, the vulgarity tiu-nia-ma actually has a very strong nationalism behind it. In 17th century, there was a eunuch Ma Shi Ying who brought down the Ming Dynasty. The cantonese thus said f**k u as f**k that Ma...

Cantonese is ridiculously difficult. Nobody seems to agree on exactly how many tones it has. Some people say 7. Some say 9. And some say over 11, referencing so-called silent tones. Sorry, but if it’s silent, it’s not a tone. But the insistence on the existence of these so-called silent tones only ups the ‘cool factor’ of Cantonese. If you can master it, you’re pretty much an unstoppable language learning force.
