as per checking 2nd hand bike. The "new" bike may be left at a corner or outside and neglected for months before a buyer comes and they just touch up the exterior.

Its quite hard to accurately gauge a bike's condition by just looking at it...but since its the only way we can shop for bikes at shops look out for a few things:

 

Unusual engine sounds e.g uneven idling or backfiring when revved.

Patches on the floor beneath the bike or oil stains on the engine casing which may indicate leaks.

Electrics: headlight, signal lights, tail light, brake light, horn...
