Hi guys, just wondering is phantom good as a first bike?

I am not sure if Phantom is good for a first bike.

But I am sure before you have got your ride license, you have already know what you want to ride.

And also, most rider (not all) started out with a Phantom and hence this community thread was build decade ago.

I suggest to go along with your heart and get an affordable used Phantom and ride till you're prepare to go for another class.

Most guyz here change their ride from Phantom to other bikes like changing their boxer pant. mid size, big size and back to small size or even smaller size and then to big size again. It all vary.

The best time was where many of us hang out together on a weekly basics and chill. Unfortunately, time pasts and many have other commitment and hence the Phantom community almost frozen.

But of course, there are still lots of buddy whom are still in touch and do get together weekly or once every 2 week.

Some rode from a student till they got attach, then got their foot deeper and build a family. And some ride when they got a family and they broken and they became single. many many pattern :-)

(sorry for being naggy on my first post to you)

Cheers!

Phantom also right? TA150 or TA200?

First off, is the bike able to use engine brake?

If cannot likely clutch worn off already, ie; spin when engaged, therefore little engine brake and lose power when accelerating because transmission not getting the full turn.

Next, are you able to push the bike around easily when in neutral?

If cannot, check if the brake are rubbing against the brake disc, slowing the bike down at all speeds.

Last thing I can think of is this but for TA200, there is a valve for air to come out which is suppose to go back into the engine to assist the next engine revolution, if that is spoiled, it will also affect the performance.

It's on the engine, I only saw it once when someone was doing an overhaul.

And if really so unlucky, the valve is spoiled, you also cannot do anything about it on your own, you will have to go to a bike shop to get it fixed.

A small query. I've just been offered a TA200 Phantom for S$3,700 being cost of machine $2,000 & cost of 10 year COE (till2022) $1,700.

Machine is in very good condition, but still is that a meaningful price request?

You are being conned. You shouldn't pay more than 1k machine price for 10 year old bike.

I was told that the 10 year COE itself cost $1,600.00 and add the cost of the bike?

Cost of the bike is actually 0. There are plenty of phantom thats dont get their COE renewed and are scraped every month. In this forum itself you will find phantoms in good condition with COE expiring for less than $500. You can buy those spend another $500 to get it to better condition and then choose to renew 5 years or 10 years.

Dont let certain bike traders to make a fool of you. Knowledge is power!

How good condition is the good?

Has it been overhauled and still running in good?

Has the wiring been replaced? 10 year old bike wiring problem very common.

Is the paint new?

Are the parts stock?

Wear and tear parts replaced?

If the bike has just been overhauled and still running in or just finished running in, wiring and paint are new, and all wearable parts eg:brake pads, tires are replaced, then in my opinion, $3700 is a reasonable price.

But unless it comes with boxes racks and eagle footrests, I will still bargain for a lower price. :cheeky:

I know, I lowballer!

But bear in mind that when the Phantom was first out, price on the road with insurance was around $7k. If you get your own insurance and renew road tax it will certainly be $4K + on the road. More if you have to fork out more money to get the boxes to store your rain coat. So yeah, $5K to have a 10 year old bike, it better be in perfect condition, because from 11th year and onwards, road tax will increase.

You can probably negotiate it to $3500 or $3000 if you are really good at bargaining.
