I was curious and 'sua-ku' during my first trip to Malaysia via NS-highway. It was to Kulai too. I must say it was very rewarding. The ride is extremely enjoyable. With seasoned tourers leading and guilding the convoy, I was assured with their presence. Ever since then, I've went in 4 more times, to Malacca and also Kuala Lumpur.

I do hope that fellow vesporeans who has yet to experience such trips to keep 21st October free (hey its a holiday!) and join VCS for this kulai trip. It will be definitely be a rewarding trip for you.

Hi guys,

nice meeting Machine K, Rae, planescape, vibe and abundance of unknowns.

I will get my vespa soon but no 2B hehehe

Hi all, have some basic questions about riding a Vespa.

Just passed test a couple of months back and got my first Vespa PX200 one week ago, totally have no idea about the workings of scooters (although this forum has been very informative!), so please bear with me.

In case it's relevant, the PX200 is secondhand and if I'm reading the paperwork right, was first bought new in 2002.

1) Regarding gear changing on the PX200, I seem to have some trouble shifting. If I don't look, I tend to shift from second to fourth gear. Similarly, when stopping and I shift from 3rd to 2nd, there's a tendency to overshoot to neutral instead.

The gear seems tight enough, it doesn't "slip" on its own, so is there a problem with the gears or is it just a matter of my getting used to it?

2) Due to the above problem, I've experienced on several occasions this horrible rattling at the back of the Vespa, like something's going to fall out. Usually this happens when I shift from second to fourth or better, get "stuck" between third and fourth.

Have I damaged my scooter or is this standard and I don't have to worry as long as I keep such instances to a minimum?

3) My speedometer just broke. The needle won't move at all, neither will the odometer. This happened just after a journey in which I experienced the problem outlined in 2).

I'm bringing it back to the shop tomorrow, but for future reference, is this something most people can fix on their own?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

I'm interested in joining the outing to Kulai, but wondering if there's a certain level of riding experience we need to have? Dun want to end up holding back the convoy or something.

Been riding less than two weeks but loving it so far, would like to try a bit of touring. Although if I should be getting a bit more exp on my PX200 before doing this sort of thing, let me know.

Thanks!

hi eseru,

well i guess the next 10 days, ensure the scooter is in running condition, u jus bought it not long ago?

perhaps do a servicing b4 the trip, apart from that, i think u r good to go if u r confident. We will not be riding quick in our scooter too. =)

Hey un-sith,

Yup, just got it less than 2 weeks ago, secondhand. Sent it to mechanic to service before taking over and put less than 250km on it so far, so it should be in running condition (I hope!).

In that case, please add me to the list! Thanks and see you guys on the 21st! :bounce:

ok sure, then u can accompany planescape. he's riding a px too.

Hmmm, u might wanna change the following stuff.

clutch cable, or readjusting of clutch cable.

speedo cable, to fix the faulty needle.

if odometer is also not reading, u might need to change the entire panel.

i think the rattle is due to the rough engaging of gears. Once ur clutch cable is solved, it shdnt happen. If it still does, it might means broken "teeth" of gears.

where did u get ur scoot btw?

if u need more help, jus let us know.

agree with un-sith, should be the clutch cable, probably needs tightening. Lubricate it as well, so that the twisting of gears will be easier.

and the rest of it takes practice... gear changing may take some getting used to. I think the fact that you overshot the intended gears is probably due to twisting too hard, try to twist lightly =)

hope it helps

Hi guys,

i also have questions about clutch cable. It seems my clutch cable breaks.... my clutch wont spring back and its totally loose. Now i cant ride my bike cause whenever i switch to gear 1 it will jump forward and engine dies.

I read the guide on how to change cable, but i open up the bike cover i cant figure out which is the clutch cable...

1)so what should i do? should i call bike shop to tow my bike?

2)does clutch cable breaks very often?

3)what do you guys usually do when it happen, change it yourself?

thanks.

Posted

Hi wilsonbb,

Vespa's levers does not have springs in them. only tension holding the levers' the cables themselves. so it'll be 'totally loose' like u said.

it's possible to ride still, juz rev a lil as u engage gear 1 frm neutral. (not too sure if tt's the proper way..but i tried it once and it worked)

1) in ur case..since u can't identify which is clutch cable, best to have it towed and play some lesson fee. unless u've got a kind neighbour who's willing to help u with it. ;)

2) clutch cable snaps pretty often, some as fast as like 1.5 mths.

3) experienced riders carry spare cables with them in thier tool box. some would choose to ride on to nearest bikeshop for help.

as for me, i'll pray hard tt it dun happen to me and try change mine every 3 mths. (in fact juz changed it yesterday!)

Actually got the PX from a friend, it hadn't been ridden in nearly two years, so we sent it to Future Scootering for servicing before I started riding.

Speedo/odo - went back to mechanic and turns out the cable snapped, it's been replaced. Also said the gears were fine, prob my inexperience with the scoot.

Heh, looking forward to riding slow slow with you planescape. Still finding it a bit scary whenever I push the PX200 past 90 km/h.

Thanks for your help and the great welcome! :)
