[Trip Report] Northern Thailand and a glimpse of Laos & Cambodia

Recommended Posts

Posted

The preparation was done long ago. 3 riders with the same passion with 3 different bikes went on a journey to venture the northern thailand and to recce the road of Laos and Cambodia for future trips.

Al-Simmons (Vstrom/CB750), yem_paul (R1200RT) and klutch (RSV)

Riders met at SG first before proceeding to Gelang Patah RnR. We had our break and refreshment and move off at around 1145pm. The main aim was to reach the northern province of Thailand as we never intended to sightsee the southern part.

We noticed that the crowd will start coming in around 8am-10am singapore timing. The best time to clear is after 10am. We had to queue for nearly an hour before clearing the passport stamp and issuing of the vehicle permits.

We reach the town of Surat Thani around 4pm the following day. Checked in and have a good rest.

Set off early from Surat Thani at around 9.30am. The aim of the day was to reach Nakhon Sawan and spend the night there.

It was even nicer if the fellow rider invited to stay over at his house. Which he did. We stopover at Kanchanaburi instead (which was around 200km before Nakhon Sawan) for the day. Exchange stories with local rider known as Woody. Very friendly chap. I should gave him the honour of the award GEMS (Going Extra Mile for Service).

The host brought us to dinner at a nearby restaurant by the river. We had seafood (that's the only menu we could eat). It was good enough.

Woody insisted to bring us to Kanchanaburi town to visit the attractions there. We went to the war memorial cemetry and the bridge over River Kwai (aka Death Railway).

Woodly left us at Supanburi for us to carry on. As we were heading to Nakhon Sawan town, met with an unfortunate accident. We managed to settle everything within that 2 days and headed to Chiang Mai on Day 4 with one bike down.

We left for Chiang Mai at Day 4 in the late afternoon and make a stopover at Tak. The following day set off to Chiang Mai. Reached the town in the noon. The weather was not so hot and not so cold. Didn't expect it to be really cold at night. Wandered around the streets of Chiang Mai looking for a bike to rent.

As the sun sets, we were just about to reach Mae Hong Son town. We found a hotel right in the middle of the town where the night bazaar is and settle down. After all the riding, we deserve a good night stay at the hotel.

We had our breakfast at our hotel, collected the cert at the chamber of commerce for completing the loop and proceed to the Long Neck Village which was about a few kilometres away.

We were doing quite a lot of river crossing on our way to the long neck village. Lucky enough, it was low tide and the bikes went through effortlessly. In certain occasion, the river can go as high as knee deep or maybe higher.

Once we are out. It's back to the corners again. Another hundreds to go perhaps. Though some corners are very nice to play with, some are quite sharp with very bumpy roads. We need to be alert at all times. Most of the times, we get tired playing with the corners and just ride slowly and go through the motion. 500km through the MHS loop was quite challenging.

As we headed towards Chiang Rai, we made a stopover at Chiang Dao as the day gets dark.

This was the coldest morning we tasted so far. As we went further north, the temperature starts to drop. In the morning even when the sun is up, we get temperature as low as 12 degrees celsius. Riding through the cold winds and fog was mentally and physically challenging. On certain occasions, we had to stop for smoke breaks to warm up our body.

As we venture further north. We passed by Maesaelong and Fang. The route had the most beautiful scenery in the whole trip. A lot of beautiful sight to enjoy along the way.

We set off early in the morning. While yem_paul n klutch went over the border to Myanmar, I waited for them at Mae Sai as my passport was not with me. Bikes were not allowed to enter, so they had to walk in. A fee of 500baht to enter and they keep your passport giving you a temporary entry permit.

After that, we head straight to Chiang Mai to return the rented bike and off to Kanchanaburi to collect my bike. We made a stopover at Tak and reach Woody's place at Kanchanaburi around afternoon the following day.

Went to Kanchanaburi town at night on day 11 to watch some re-enactment of the world war at the Bridge over River Kwai. There were some good fireworks display.

After the show, we went to the night bazaar. The following day was the King's birthday and public holiday. That explains the crowd at the bazaar.

Schackster is riding a malaysian registered bike. He is residing in KL. They were on a group tour of 10-15 bikes up to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia. Not sure if they went in Laos.

A lot of paperwork are done to enter Vietnam.

in case you guys want contact information in Vietnam, go to Dalat and look for 'easy riders'..... they are the headsnakes of the central highlands, and they provide excellent tour guides around Vietnam, from Dalat to Saigon to Mekong Delta, Hoi An, DMZ, Hue, Hanoi, Sapa, etc..... They take you through Vietnam using the scenic new route connecting HCMC and Hanoi via Route 13,14, 15 instead of the boring Highway 1.

These guys are highly recommended in the Lonely Planet Guidebook and they will bring you to places less visited by tourists, show u nice sceneries, bring you to the homes of the local minorities, and shows u the real vietnam that the famous tour operators dont even know! They brought me to a countryside mountain restaurant at 1000m above sea level, overlooking the villages, where we had 10 local dishes and drinks for lunch for a NETT TOTAL BILL OF JUST 60,000VND (about SGD$6)!!!!!!

They can be found in Dalat and they wear a blue 'easy rider' jacket to indicate their authenticity. There are fake ones of course, but only the 80 odd real 'easy riders' wear the blue jacket with the logo on their back/front.

"YES", Singapore bikes can eneter Vietnam, same as Malaysian bikes or any other foreign bikes for that matter. The key is to get the entry permits sorted before you go and dont try to do yourselves.Use proffesionals, it will cost you but do-able nevertheless. If you just turn up at the border and try to get in you will be rejected and end up with a communist boot up your tender backsides. We have only just returned from a succesful trip and were one of the few groups to be allowed entry in Vietnam on big bikes for many years.FYI, we went with 9 bikes in total.8 Malaysian bikes and yes even 1 Singapore registered bike. The blue Hayabusa in the picture attached is from Singapore. Im attaching the name cards of the people who made it happen , if you do want to explore further I suggest you make initial contact with the Thia person first.
