Orange is the signature colour, and the new paint is much better than their previous offerings.

The Orange in the shop is actually pre-sold. But if our friend is successful today, he will have it first while another Orange will be ordered in. So, we are looking at 2 more Orange 950 on the street......... Muahuahuahua.... http://www.kings-animal-farm.de/lach___smilie.gif

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/images/smilies/sid.gif The Force in the Orange side is growing strong, but the "Empire" had struck back, they are launching a spate of new models, the R1200S being their latest.

MCN noted that Orange will be launching 2 new models at the Milan show, one will be the much anticipated 990ADV and the other.......... ??????

Okie guys, latest scoop:

The Model Range 2006: KTM 990 Adventure S: Super sporty because of its longer suspension travel and with the new blue optics in the attractive “Dakar-Design” that underlines its origins in rally sport. KTM 990 Adventure, somewhat lower and more comfortable than its big sister and with improved safety factors through its ABS. this one comes in two variations of the new two-colour design: orange-grey and black-grey.

TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION ENGINE The 990 Adventure engine is the tried and true LC8 engine with 999 ccm and electronic fuel injections adapted to meet the requirements of a big displacement Enduro motorcycle. When compared to the 950 Adventure, this bike has additional displacement with optimized valve timing. In addition it has as new motor management of the highest technical level that guarantees a powerful and dynamic unfolding of power and significantly improved torque with the same level of performance.

TECHNICAL DATA

• V-2, 75° • 999 cc

• Bore / Stroke: 101 / 62.4 mm

• 72 kW/98 Hp at 8.500/rpm

• 95 Nm at 6.500/rpm

• DOHC

• Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI)

• Dry Sump Lubrication

• 6-gear Transmission

ENGINE DETAILS

Engine Concept

With just 58 kg, the LC8 engine is still the lightest and most compact 2-cylinder of its class. This is a unique engine concept with a multifunctional shaft (this serves as a balancing of mass, acts as a centrifuge for the housing ventilation, drives the water pump and chain and supports the E-Starter idler), dry sump lubrication and a short stroke engine layout ensures incomparable handling and riding enjoyment.

Cylinder

A new cylinder with a larger bore of 101 mm is additionally strengthened in order to withstand the increased torque in the lower range of speeds.

Piston

A newly developed, and extremely lightly constructed piston (395 gram) reduces the oscillating mass, ensures minimum vibrations and spontaneous response.

Cylinder Head

The entry canal of the DOHC Cylinder Head is adjusted with the 48er throttle body. New camshafts optimise the gas exchange ensuring powerful performance characteristics over the entire range of speeds.

Crankshaft

The forged, one-piece crankshaft with a longer stroke of now 62.4 mm and 125 mm long forged con rod is an important element for the compactness of the LC8 engine. Result: minimal oscillating masses, spontaneous response and sporty engine characteristics.

Motor Management

The tried and true, sequential fuel injections specially optimised by Keihin for the 990 Adventure features two throttles per cylinder. The two throttles support a uniform torque curve so that they regulate the unfolding of power in various areas, independent from the main throttle. It goes without saying that the system can be easily adjusted for low octane fuel, as well as featuring automatic height compensation. An automatic cold start, as well as the idling regulation underline the high technical standards. Why Keihin? Keihin is well known as the competent segment partner in terms of EFI. Lambda probes One Lamda probe per cylinder feeds back information on the emission characteristics to the control unit and together with the catalyser and secondary air system ensures minimal exhaust emission (EURO III).

CHASSIS

Technical data

• Tubular space frame, chrome-moly-steel (11 kg)

• WP Suspension chassis

• Brembo Brakes

• Bosch ABS (990 Adventure)

• Regulated catalyser

• Weight (without fuel) 199 kg

• Vmax + 200 km/h

CHASSIS DETAILS

Frame Self supporting tubular space frame made from chrome-molybdenum is considered the most stable, and with 11 kg, the lightest construction on the market. A modification in the area of the steering head increases the steering angle.

Rear Frame

Robust and load bearing rear made from weight saving aluminium. It is possible to easily mount the KTM luggage rack system, including provision for a top case. A new storage area in the rear fender replaces the space under the seat, which now houses the ABS block.

WP-Upside-Down Suspension Fork, with 48 mm ensures incomparable stability and suspension characteristics on any surface. Variable spring tension, adjustable rebound- and compression damping. Travel 245 mm (990 Adventure S) or 210 mm (990 Adventure).

WP-PDS shock Absorber with adjustable rebound- and compression damping. Long spring travel of 245 mm (990 Adventure S) and 210 mm (990 Adventure) guarantees excellent riding qualities both off- and onroad. The hydraulic spring tension allows for the adjustment of the shock absorber using a swivelling thumbwheel which can be turned to the load condition by hand.

Handlebar The high quality Renthal handlebar made of conified aluminium offer the highest level of rigidity with the minimum weight.

Silencer High quality stainless steel silencers each with regulated catalyser that reduce emissions to EURO III levels

Braking System

The Brembo braking system with new floating brake disks are still setting the standards when it comes to brakes. The relocation of the front steel flex break hoses makes a length adjustment possible outside the cockpit. On the 990 Adventure wheel revolution sensors, with assistance from sensor wheels send a message to the ABS steering system if either the front or the back wheel comes to a halt.

ABS

The KTM engineers have, together with Brembo and Bosch conducted some dedicated development effort to produce an ABS system that has been tailor made for KTM. KTM thus becomes the first motorcycle manufacturer to introduce the latest generation Bosch ABS. The Bosch M8 is the lightest and most compact dual cycle ABS System on the market and offers optimal regulation strategies and regulation intervals in the area of milliseconds. The strength of the system lies in the excellent measured braking control both in and outside of the ABS regulations areas. Front and rear brakes work in independent regulation cycles and allow the KTM rider to use his own braking style. Braking performance and measured braking control are in keeping with the high standards demanded by KTM and become the yardstick, stretching beyond pneumatic tyres and long spring travel. In addition, the system also has very good regulation characteristics beyond the asphalt. The feel for the rear wheel stays intact. For ambitious offroaders, the system can be easily deactivated at the push of a button, whereupon the excellent measured braking control stays intact.

The ABS System has been designed as an independent unit integrated into the overall system of onboard electronics in order to achieve the maximum operation reliability. The ABS Block well protected and centrally located under the seat.

With the release of the new KTM Adventure models, the ABS has not been designed as an annoying "Add-On". We have managed to achieve typical KTM attributes with both the ABS and braking systems, ensuring a maximum amount of fun, optimal performance and the highest level of safety.

18/21" – Wheels are idea for off-and onroad use. The front wheel has an improved and more stable 2.15” rim; the back wheel has a broader 4.25" rim. A large range of offroad tyres are available. Strongly recommended are the continental TKC 80, which has been specially developed for the new KTM. These tyres have very good offroad characteristics and a Vmax allowance of 170 km/h.

FRONT FENDER

A newly designed front fender with stable attachment to the fork offers more space between it and the tyre, therefore improving offroad ride-ability.

Tanks

Vertically separated deep, lateral and low set tanks made from unbreakable nylon were newly designed for the EFI. A fuel pump has been integrated into the left tank while the interiors of both tanks were redesigned to accommodate the hoses and cable. In addition, large sized plastic protectors efficiently shield the tanks in the event of an accident.

Cockpit

The cockpit has an analogue tachometer and multifunctional instrument, which shows speed, total and daily kilometres (Trip 1 und Trip 2), cooling water temperature, tank stop distance indicator and clock. The instrument can be extended to include a “Tripmaster” function by adding a "remote control" from the PowerParts program that can be mounted near the left grip on the handlebar. On the 990 Adventure, the ABS light indicator informs about any faults in the system and makes possible the deactivation of the ABS for heavy offroad conditions.

Storage compartment

A storage compartment with optimal accessibility situated between the steering head and the seat offers 2 litres of space for small items like mobile phones, wallets and registration papers.

Seat

Compared to the more offroad-oriented models, the seat of the S model, with its seat height of 895 mm ensures that the 990 Adventure has a lower seat with a stepped contour for increased comfort for both rider and passenger (seat height 860 mm).

Ground Clearance

The dry sump lubrication without any oil bath makes possible a generous ground clearance of 296 mm (990 Adventure S) and 261 mm (990 Adventure). A complete aluminium engine protector provides efficient protection for the engine and the battery.

Battery

"Extended” Battery pole allows the battery to be recharges without having to open up the battery box.

Blinker

New blinkers in a modern design with transparent plastic lenses and orange light bulbs are elastically mounted.

Comparing the 950 ADVENTURE to the 990 ADVENTURE

• Highest level of conform through ultra modern motor management (no choke, very stable idling, throttle cut-off, height compensation, comfortable diagnostics, better response...)

• Significantly more revolutions because of the higher displacement therefore better draft. Very homogenous unfolding of power because of the second throttle.

• Significantly reduced exhaust emission because of the regulated catalyser, highest safety standards through the ultra modern ABS (which can be shut off)

• New floating brake discs reduce squealing brakes.

• Improved steering lock through optimized frame

• Better front fender stability with more space between the fender and wheel for improved offroad performance

• Tanks with better protection (tank protectors as standard equipment

• Easier access to the battery pole for recharging

• Sportier blinker

ABS

• Lightest 2-cycle system on the market

• Very neutral compensation needed to deal with lifting of the rear tyre, also in the first stages. Accordingly the retraction of brake pressure through the ABS to reduce the risk of rollover is less noticeable and is also shorter.

• The system as a rule usually recognizes the difference between a threatened rollover and a slight indication of unevenness in the road surface. The bike remains stable. Significantly better braking control in all three relevant braking conditions, i.e. first before an ABS regulation and second with the transition to the ABS regulation. The third and very important point is the amount of braking control when easing off the brakes. The rider can exit from the ABS area of regulation without reducing the maximum amount of braking power. Some other systems to not allow for fine brake adjustment during ABS regulation and result in the rider experiencing an unusually strong loss of braking power.

• A significantly lower and non critical consumption of electricity is realized by not utilizing integral functions and brake boosters. The minimum operating voltage for perfectly operating ABS system is likewise lower than the systems already mentioned.

• No use of mechanical and hydraulic transfer elements to realize an integrated solution. No maintenance, no wear and tear.

• Through a generously dimensioned design of the braking system and the hydraulic transmission, a brake booster can be done away with.

No change to the pressure point and the brake adjustability if the system fails or the ignition is switched off. ABS system does not fail in the event of a defective brake light switch. No damage to the wheel sensors during demounting or mounting of wheels.

Because of an independent 2-cycle system, the rider can adapt the braking force to suit the prevailing conditions, for example if there is a pillion passenger and during long mountain descents. Especially during long mountain descents there can be unintentional over braking of the rear wheel, following ABS regulation and a resulting unrest of the chassis.

Dakar

Dakar race is a extreme dangerious and endurance sport. Man lost their life in the race while completing for the trophy. That's one reason why I like the adv bike, it's the spirit of the rider that keeps the race and bike going.

Thanks for showing the full picture of the dakar logo, finally it more than a tiger strips to me now. It's actually a logo of a "sahara" man  Neat.

Before, aesthetically it was like a few strips painted across the bike, now I see a Sahara man. That's make a lot more sense to me. :cheeky:

Where, then, lies the answer?

In choice. Which shall it be: bankruptcy of purse or bankruptcy of life?
