For those bros who have modded your exhaust and afraid to fail inspection,

U might wana know that my holesaw modded exhaust (about 90db) passed inspection at 70db today. All u need is a harley silencer and a fire blanket (can get free when u buy a fire extinguiser) so that it wont burn off so easily. Wrap the cut fire blanket (cut to size) around the silencer and shove it into the exhaust and bolt it. U might wana cut away excess fibres sticking out of the exhaust. Hehehehe

Good luck bros. Now bike sounds like a harley with baffles on. Hahahaha

Some update on what ive done to my springer. Changed the rear fender by widening a sportster one and adding a cool brake lamp. Unfortunately pillion seat not ready cos it was too big and have to resize and rewrap. Haizz

Added ape hangers too. Actually got the risers from aunty shop (1.5" high) and an original dragstar classic handlebar.

Hi Guys, need some info.

Don't have a manual. Only have manual for the VT600.

Need to do the valves. Anyone knows what are the valve clearances?

Also what is the recommended setting for air/fuel mixture screw?

How many turns out? Mine is running very lean.

Thanks in advance.

I found a Portuguese service manual for NV400 Special... Looks legit as the gearbox is 5 gears and the carb specs are different from the VT600. I've uploaded it to my Skydrive.

http://sdrv.ms/1cexnRX

From the above manual (and Google Translated):

"MOTOR

item Specifications

Initial ignition point of 6.5 ° BTDC at idle

Maximum 30 ° BTDC advance at 6,000 rpm

NGK Spark Plug DPR8EA -9

Spark plug gap 0.8-0.9 mm

Valve clearance Intake 0.15 mm

Exhaust 0.20 mm

Idling 1,100 ± 100 rpm

Cylinder Compression 1,324 ± 98 kPa ( 13.5 ± 1.0 kg/cm2 , 192 ± 14 psi)

Clutch lever throttle 2-6 mm

CARBURETOR

item Specifications

Identification number VDF1G

Diameter of 34 mm venturi

Float level 7 mm

Initial opening of the mixture screw 2-1/8 turns

Idling 1,100 ± 100 ( rpm )

Main giclée FRONT REAR # 100 # 100

Giclée idle # 38

Clearance of 2-6 mm throttle grip"

Differences that I can tell so far is the cylinder size (duh), gearbox, carb jet sizes, and reserve tank (2.9l instead of 3.4l)

Before you play with the air/fuel mixture, I suggest you inspect your air intake system and check for leaks. I had my carb boot clamps loosen and spray fuel onto my engine at high riding speeds before, and my air filter wasn't seated properly once (after it was changed by the shop mechanic). Tightened them up and woah, engine runs like a champ now.

In any case, from the manual:

"SETTING THE MIXTURE SCREW

NOTE

1. Turn each mixture screw clockwise until seated

headquarters . Then turn the screw counterclockwise

schedule according to specification.

INITIAL OPENING : 2 1/ 8 turns ( counterclockwise )

This is the initial setting prior to the final adjustment of the screw

mixture .

the

2 . Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature .

3 . Connect a tachometer in accordance with the instructions of

manufacturer.

4 . Adjust the idle speed using the screw

acceleration.

Idle speed : 1,100 ± 100 ( rpm )

5 . Turn each mixture screw half turn counterclockwise

time .

6 . If the engine speed to increase 50 rpm or more , turn the

screws another half turn counter -clockwise until the rotation

Motor down 50 min-1 ( rpm) or less.

7 . Adjust the idle speed ( step 4 ) .

8 . Turn the mixture screw the rear cylinder carburetor

clockwise until the engine rpm drop 50 rpm .

9. Turn the mixture screw the rear cylinder carburetor

a turn anti -clockwise from the position obtained in

previous step (8).

10 . Adjust the idle speed ( step 4 ) .

11 . Repeat steps 8 , 9 and 10 for the screws Mix

front barrel carburetor .

12 . Put new plugs in the screw holes of the mixture

using the valve guide installer 7 mm

( 07942-8230000 ) . The plug is fully

Seated fit when 1 mm .

Do not squeeze the mixture screw against the seat as she

will be damaged .

• The mixture screws are preset at the factory and

require no adjustment unless they are replaced .

• Use a tachometer with graduations of 50 rpm or less "

Just curious, which shop are you getting you valves done at? I've been to popular shops and they are not willing to do it for old bikes like ours.

colinmackay I have a Steed crash bar to sell... real cheap. Plus a VSE Live to Ride Chrome air filter cover. PM me if interested.

Nice ride Sprint74. Think I saw you leaving from the Ubi workshops once. That distinctive soft luggage haha. Do you leave your soft luggage on the bike when you park in public?

In response to ahpuila1, now when you go for inspection they take photos of your bike. I suspect when LTA spots your bike at a parking lot they can check the photos and compare. Anything different, issue summon to inspection.

My non OEM bullet headlight bucket and pointy teardrop mirrors didn't pass. One inspector was considering failing my extended forward controls too. So want to mod, be prepared for LTA.

Yes I know. Most are not keen unless you are a regular customer.

I am going try doing it myself.

Only problem is the bike don't have a rev counter.

So I will have to adjust on a 'trial and error' basis.

I have a set of pressure guages so while in there I can balance the carbs(vacuum).

Thanks for the info. I will start with 2 1/8 out.

Bike is running very lean. All 4 plugs are white.

It won't go faster than 105 kmph. Won't rev up.

Sputters like it is not getting enough gas.

No air leak as far as I can see.

All rubber boots and air filter properly attached.

Have not tried the the spray test though.

Wish me luck. Cheers !!

Yep. But I canvas my bike while at home and just leave it when I park outside. So far ok. Heeeee
