Hi,

I'll be moving to Singapore soon, from the San Francisco Bay Area. I'd like know what gear you guys wear in that wonderful hot weather.

I have the Arai Quantum/f, and full leathers, boots, gloves, back protector etc. when I ride. I can't imagine wearing all that gear in Singapore; I'm guessing I will have a heat stroke. Are there certain brands of leathers that are specially designed for such warm weather.

Please enlighten me on the type of gear you guys have. This does not apply to squids who simply go around in shorts, sandals and a t shirt, last time I was there, I never seen so many squids in my life. I'd rather not end up like that moron pictured below.

Thank you for your time.

Sorry bro but compared to the west, pretty much everyone here is a squid. For local riding nobody gets into leathers. Those more safety-conscious amongst us will use a fullface helmet, leather gloves and riding boots. You'll see maybe one in five hundred wearing an armoured mesh jacket (if you're lucky). Heck, i wear my mesh jacket maybe 20% of the time.

Most of us ride locally for transport, there's not much carving action here in the land of traffic cops and traffic lights. For our kicks we usually head north into malaysia, either for rides around the countryside or the closest racetrack, which is about 30-45 minutes from the border.

Those who risk nothing, do nothing, achieve nothing, become nothing.

Most riders in Singapore do not wear much protective gear when riding.

Only the helmet is mandatory. Even so, most riders do not like to wear full face, as they find it hot.

Most riders (90%) simply zip around in whaterver shorts/t-shirt/work clothes/jeans they happen to wear that day.

A small handful wear proper riding jackets, mostly of the fabric type. Mesh jackets are popular with this small group, as they are cooling for the local weather.

Riding pants are seldom worn, as they are cumbersome and hot. Ditto riding boots. Most just contend with sneakers/dress shoes.

Gloves are generally unpopular too, except for a small group of riders who value their pinkies.

Personally, I use on a daily basis an arai full face, mesh jacket, doc martin high cut boots, leather gloves.

Hope this helps.

Wow! ... you guys are a bunch of squids!

Thank you for the input. I intend to ride for recreation only. From the looks of it, has to be on weekend in the early morning, when it's cool enough to wear gear. There are a lot of great roads in the SF Bay area, (check out http://www.pashnit.com) so we are spoiled for choice. However, track days can be expensive. Usually about $150+ USD. I heard that Pasir Gudang track costs about $50RM? Win some lose some I suppose.

Who are the prominent gear dealers in Singapore? I value my pinkies very much indeed, so I will be riding when it's cool and comfy enough. Any recommendations on gear will be great.

If anyone wants to come over for vacation, I'd be happy to show you some roads and recommend some rentals. M/C rentals range from a Harley to BMW to CBR600RR. Cost about $120 USD/day with insurance and usually unlimited miles.

Thank you again.

Most of us ride as a transport and in singapore, it's bascially city riding.

Mesh jackets are the only sensible choice in this hot and humid place.

There's a shop carrying some jackets, name is Motoworld.

The other place is called Regina, they carry a few brands as well.

I forgot the exact addresses of both places, perhaps the others can help.

Forgot;

Watch out for drivers in singapore. They suffer from motorcyclism, a sight disorder. They just can't seem to notice bikes on the roads. They like to change lanes without signalling, force bikes out of lanes.

Just for your info.

Welcome to singapore, where the bikes are friendly and the cars crappy.

Best regards,

Sotong

define squid

wat "wonderful" words u use

there is nothing wrong wearin shorts, sandals and a t shirt riding

it so rude of u to come shooting your mouth here

how abt this. u can try wearing ROBO COP suit with full Daikin Air-con.

your so call squid might identity u as IMH member or jus simply HAO LIAN KIA.

MAYBE..

Hi,

I'll be moving to San Francisco Bay Area soon, from Singapore . I'd like know what gear you guys wear in that wonderful cold weather.

I have the china made singlet, and cotton, $2 rubber slippers, disposeable plastic gloves, Tiger brand back plaster etc. when I ride. I can't imagine wearing all that gear in SFB area; I'm guessing I will have a cold stroke. Are there certain brands of cotton that are specially designed for such cold weather.

Please enlighten me on the type of gear you guys have. This does not apply to HAO LIAN KIA who simply go around in Arai Quantum/f, and full leathers, boots, gloves, back protector etc. last time I was there(and out of 300+ countries, i only been to SFB in my whole entire life) , I never seen so many HLK in my life. I'd rather not end up like that BAi CHi pictured below.

Thank you for your time.

Attached is a pic of ROBO COP suffering frm extreme heat stroke n panting like a DOG.

btw no offence to those wearin protective gear when riding

different place may require certain type of protective dress code

but the way those who are wearing more casually been protrayed in his post is way too much

i agree wif with wat Constructicon posted.. drivers!!

i do agree having suitable protective gear do increase the safetyness

it depends more on the way we ride and not wat we are riding, and wat we wear

safety riding promote longer riding

cheers

FYI, someone with full gears just passed away cos some Dam n! driver was speeding wif his fren in the town! he was jus riding straight down the road when the driver jus whacked him frm behind. twisted neck and lots of broken bone.

:weep:

my regards and tears goes to him and his family.

that looks really painful, bet he sings in the showers for the next month or so.

i make do with jeans, a good pair of boots, gloves and at least short-sleeves if i need to scoot around. i wear a mesh-jacket with CE armour maybe 1/2 the time, or when touring in malaysia. Half-face helmet, full-face if i'm touring or going fast. You can pick up plenty of suitable gear here in s'pore, though the prices aren't exactly cheap - say about S$300+ for a decent mesh jacket? check-in with us again after you get here, sure somebody'll be willing to take you shopping.

you won't last 5 mins in full leathers waiting at the lights commuting on any typical afternoon, sorry... though you could always use it for track-days.

Thank you guys for the friendly and helpful replies, most of you anyway. I understood most of what you guys are saying.

In CA, the legal safety protective equipment is the helmet. There are some members of the m/c community who chooses to go with that level of protection. In some states there are no helmet laws at all i.e. Florida, and they are also wondering why m/c fatalities are going up there. Hmm...

IMO, regarding gear, besides money, culture plays a part as well. There are a fair number of individuals here who chooses not to wear gear, or simply go with the cheap stuff due to either reason, or a combination of both. Wearing jeans, no gloves, and a pair of sneakers, is the typical definition of a squid here. However, the Harley Davidson crusier subculture here will have a different definition as well. Most HD riders choose a half helmet and leather jacket and leather chaps. What some street riders might consider borderline squidly might be well acceptable in the HD/chopper motorcycle subculture.

While it might be true that in some accidents, no amount of gear will help, in my empricial observations (80%+), in most accidents they do. When a rider low sides, high sides or otherwise falls off the motorcycle, proper gear prevents a lot of road rash, broken bone, twisted ankles etc. A back protector can also serve to reduce the incidence of back injury from impact etc. Gear cannot protect 100%, but in most cases, even at street riding speeds of 20-80km/h gear can be very useful.

It's very true that in Singapore I won't last 5 minutes in a 'ROBOCOP' suit. (Honestly, I do feel Robocop-ish in the suit) It's just way to hot and humid. It's most likely that I will not commute on a m/c, mainly focusing on trackdays. I have read there is a track in Pasir Gudang and a F1 track in Sepang. I probabley will do most of my riding in the mornings on the track and get on out before I roast like a turkey. Please note that personal pride absolutely has to do with proper gear, I pride myself on having all my skin on me and not half way as a bloody mess on the road. Plus I think I look great in leathers. (Yes, it's a joke... ha ha! captain obvious strikes yet again)

On a side note, the following gear might be cool enough for Singapore use

1) Alpinestars Stunt Shoes: Rugged waterproof probuck and durable cordura construction. TPU protective heel plate. Weatherproof gusseted tongue. Custom PU liner. Contoured laces stay tied. Special footpeg gripping design. Vulcanized rubber sole for great traction on wet surfaces. Thick and protective extended toe counter. "Stay put" suede on the arch. Raised TPR rubber on shifter and other high wear areas. Low profile sole design with Astar logo. Full length molded PU midsole and "sure step" rubber outsole. Internal molded shank. Removable TPR lace guard.

I personally have these pair of shoes. They are very well constructed and also comfy to wear. Maybe these will work instead of sneakers. $72USD

More gear to follow, see if you guys think it will work.

Oh, btw, if some of you are offended, erm... don't be. It's not meant to offend you, some of these statements are made in jest. Usually, I try not to post what I won't say to someone in person. But if you really are moving here and want to ride, please wear the ride gear, at least to keep warm enough.

Alpinestars ERGO Denim Riding Pants. $129USD Kindda pricey... but the skin on my legs are worth maybe about $200USD ish.

What do you guys think about this?

Alpinestars BIONIC Protector Jacket $185USD

Alpinestars Bionic Protector Jacket. Still using a 'roost protector' for for off-road? Strap in to something that will keep you comfortable and in one piece. The astars protector jackets fit snug on the body to be in place where they need to be when you hit the ground. MX guys use them, street guys use them, road racers use them. CE certified GP elbow and shoulder protectors. The back protector in this system is the same unit sold separately for road racers as the Tech Race Back protector and is designed to take an impact at speeds up to 180. Technical stretch net construction. Removable Tech Race back guard. Chest guard. Stretch Cordura reinforcement on the back. Zipper closure. Adjustable arms and shoulders. The back protector is also removable to use as a separate unit for back protection under your leathers.

Coll and robocop all at the same time.

I wear a full-face helmet, ICON Tarmac gloves and a mesh riding jacket with soft armor at the back with CE armor in the shoulders to work everyday.

For me personally this is the compromise between safety and getting to work without suffering heat stroke I'm willing to take.

full face, gloves, mesh jacket with armour and riding boots to work or trips longer than 3km!

Luckily my mesh jacket can zip/unzip without fuss, so even town riding is not too much of a problem.

First of all, Welcome to Singapore.

Bikers are a rare breed here. Therefore we are not highly regarded as motorists. Nonetheless safety is how we take care of ourselves. As what some of the SBFers have mentioned, a full-face helmet, mesh armoured riding jacket, titanium kelvar gloves and proper pants and shoes will be considered the ultimate in safety here. It is good enough.

Should you need any help once you are here, feel free to ask or look for me. If you like, I do organise riding trips up north to Malaysia once a while either by myself or with the local SBFers. So feel free to join me. I am basically a weekend rider. On weekdays, I am the normal executive in work wear. On weekends, it's my bike which I call Su-chan, my missus and me. We CRUISE.

So no worries, mate. It's rough out there but we wear what we like and we ride as we are.

Cheerios.

Check this thread out. I am creating a club of bikers for bikers. This is for intercultural intergration. Come on in, fellow bikers.
