Anfield holds no fear for Mourinho

Jose Mourinho shrugged off the prospect of a hostile reception at Anfield as he insisted Chelsea would follow their Carling Cup blueprint to reach the Champions League final.

Getting shirty: Carragher gets to grips with Drogba rather easily for £24m pounds worth of striker. (GettyImages)

Mourinho was barracked by hundreds of Liverpool fans during last night's goalless draw at Stamford Bridge in the semi-final first-leg tie.

This followed his unwise 'silence' gesture in placing his finger to his lips after Chelsea scored against Liverpool in their Carling Cup final triumph in Cardiff.

The Chelsea boss later apologised for his actions, insisting that he meant to direct his gesture at the media rather than the Liverpool fans.

And he insisted the Kop would be better off encouraging their team at Anfield next Tuesday, rather than barracking him.

'I think they have to concentrate on supporting their team to reach the final. What they do to me doesn't interfere in the game,' he declared. 'They can shout and say this or that but I'll just sit there and do my job. They should concentrate on helping their team - as their team will need that support.

'With a good referee, who doesn't feel the pressure, it's enjoyable to play in fantastic places like Anfield.'

Even though Liverpool held Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho remains supremely confident that the Blues will reach the final, just as they did in the Carling Cup.

'In the Carling Cup semi-final, we drew 0-0 at home to Manchester United but didn't panic and beat them away from home,' he insisted.

'Last season, when I was at Porto, it was 0-0 in the semi-final at home to Deportivo and we beat them in La Coruna. It's 0-0 here so I trust we can do it again.'

Xabi Alonso is ruled out through suspension after picking up his third booking of the competition and, while Dietmar Hamann may return from injury, the Spanish playmaker will be missed.

He was certainly influential at Stamford Bridge, with Liverpool holding their own in a match which only sporadically came to life.

Chelsea had the best chance, with Frank Lampard blazing a half-volley over the bar from close-range after Joe Cole had flicked on William Gallas' cross.

However, they were still indebted to keeper Petr Cech for two excellent saves, firstly to block an effort by John Arne Riise and then to acrobatically tip a header from Milan Baros around the post.

There was patently little excitement in the second-half, with Jamie Carragher inspiring a resolute Liverpool defence, and it was left to Mourinho to indulge in mind-games after the final whistle.

'I feel there's more pressure for them and less pressure for us. I think 99.9 per cent of Liverpool people and fans think they are in the final - but they're not,' he declared.

'It's like an FA Cup game, where you play one leg away from home, but I like that situation very much as I think we can score goals and get a result.

'It will be a completely different game for them at Anfield. It's one thing to play for a zero-zero and it's another thing to play for a victory. I'm very confident that we're going to the final.'

Rafael Benitez refused to be drawn into such bold predictions, preferring to place himself among the cautious minority.

'I have a lot of confidence but we need to play a good game as we know they are a good team and we must be careful,' he stressed.

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard nevertheless told Sky Sports: 'Ideally we would have liked to nick a goal but hopefully our fans will lift the roof off in the second leg.

'This was a good result because they've got world class players. It is a good situation. We have very good supporters, they will be with us at Anfield and we need to win.'

i think jaime carragher is really improving game after game man.. the commentators were full of praise for him... too bad he wasn't nominated for PFA... anyway, drogba really has big mouth... haha.. i think big lips lah... very scary man his face... arjen robben had a quiet game yesterday man.. but that is fgood news for liverpool...

but alonso will be out for the next match... :sian:

But Carragher best only in centre-back, but cannot make it at full-back, cos he cannot attack well and no speed. Look at Heinze and Ashley... :thumb:... those are full-backs!!!

Just saw this fan mail, quite interesting.

Have We Turned Italian?

Did you catch the match last night? I thought there were two English teams left in the competition. Last night I counted two Italian teams to along with AC Milan.

Who am I pulling for between the two? Who cares? Just wake me when one of them is ready to play football.

Italian teams are notorious for tactical football... or the new term "winning" football... very boring. A bit like Chelsea and Houllier's LVP, stronger in defence... don't expect swashbuckling and entertaining actions. I always cannot tahan one full italian match. Although they can have good playmakers like Kaka and Roberto Baggio, but they can make it until very boring.

Also maybe because the italian broadcasts like blur-blur, not clear. This also increases the urge to sleep... kekeke.

Hope this "winning" football don't dominates, or else it will be like 1990 world cup where every tie had to be decided by penalties. Sian. I prefer the 1986 Maradona-type football. :thumb:

If Everton's standard is like last night, I prefer LVP to play CL liao. Although I can say they had done well to qualify (maybe) for 4th spot, I doubt Everton can actually pass the 2-leg CL qualifiers to enter the group stage.

90% confirm leh,,,cos the new said so.

And net never said anything about the rules for semi final.

That why liverpool is happy to settle for a draw at away (they suk at away match)

Home ground even if is a draw oso have to play the penalty kick.
