Gerrard ruled out of Juventus clash

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been ruled out of his side's Champions League quarter-final second leg match against Juventus on Wednesday night.

The talismanic skipper picked up a groin injury in the 1-0 defeat to Man City on Saturday and Liverpool medical staff today reluctantly ruled him out of the trip to Turin.

The 24-year-old England midfielder will not travel to the Stadio Delle Alpi and will remain at the club's Melwood complex for further treatment as Liverpool look to get him fit for this weekend's visit of Tottenham.

Gerrard was instrumental in the Reds' 2-1 win against the Italians at Anfield and his omission is big blow to Liverpool's hope of reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Manager Rafa Benitez may turn to Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso, who has played only one reserve game since breaking his ankle on New Year's Day against Chelsea, as a replacement.

The Reds boss will have Milan Baros and Sami Hyypia back in the side, but Fernando Morientes and Mauricio Pellegrino are both cup tied.

Now Gerrard is added to an injury list that reads like a full first team, with Harry Kewell, Chris Kirkland, Djibril Cisse, Dietmar Hamann, Josemi, Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Neil Mellor all injured.

Benitez must also decide whether experienced 'keeper Jerzy Dudek is fit enough after his hamstring problem to take over from rookie Scott Carson in Turin.

Juventus' injury worries seem to have eased with both Emerson and David Trezeguet taking part in training on Sunday.

The pair sat out Juventus' draw against Fiorentina but are expected to play on Wednesday.

Trezeguet out for Juventus

Juventus striker David Trezeguet has been ruled out of Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Liverpool in Turin.

The French international, who hurt his ankle after appearing as a second-half substitute in last week's first leg at Anfield, attempted to train today but was unable to complete the work-out.

'He hasn't been included in the squad,' Juve coach Fabio Capello said. 'He failed to finish training due to the ankle injury.

'I am not a doctor, I am a coach, and therefore I have to respect the doctor's decision.'

Trezeguet's absence means Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will play alongside Alessandro del Piero in attack as Juve attempt to overturn a 2-1 deficit.

Midfielder Emerson, who had been an injury doubt, is fit again after sitting out Saturday night's 3-3 draw at Fiorentina and is included in the squad.

UEFA to discuss Milan derby unrest

MILAN, April 13 (Reuters) - Inter Milan can expect severe punishment when UEFA meet on Friday to decide what action to take over the abandoned Champions League quarter-final second leg against city rivals AC Milan.

Inter fans continued to throw missiles even after an appeal for calm. (BenRadford/GettyImages)

Having won the first-leg 2-0, AC Milan were leading the second leg 1-0 after 73 minutes on Tuesday when the game was stopped because flares were thrown on to the pitch of the San Siro stadium the two clubs share.

UEFA said on Wednesday its disciplinary body would meet at 1200 GMT on Friday. The body will have to decide on the result of the game and will handle any ban, suspension or fine related to the crowd disorder.

UEFA could order the second leg to be replayed or just the last 17 minutes but precedent suggests AC Milan will be awarded victory and Inter handed a very heavy fine or a suspension and a banning order.

AC Milan director Umberto Gandini said it was a bad night for the city of Milan.

'Whatever result will come (from UEFA), it has been very, very difficult and very sad,' Gandini told Sky Sports News.

'It will be difficult to clean the image of the Milan stadium, the Milan supporters and the city in general but I think a penalty is deserved and I think Inter people know they deserve a penalty.

'I think they will be obliged to play behind closed doors for a few matches,' said Gandini, adding that he did not want Inter kicked out of European competition.

Despite the trouble during the game, Gandini said nothing happened outside the stadium after the match.

'The event was disturbed by the flares and that's the only incident that happened...now it's all down to the investigators to look at the films, the pictures, to try to get the people (responsible),' he said.

German referee Markus Merk took the players off the pitch after AC Milan keeper Dida was struck by one of dozens of flares thrown down from the stands following a headed goal from Inter's Argentine midfielder Esteban Cambiasso being disallowed.

Dida received medical treatment to his shoulder while Inter players urged their fans to stop hurling objects on to the pitch.

The goal frame disappeared in clouds of smoke as flares continued to rain down on the pitch.

The players came back out after 25 minutes but Merk took them off again just 30 seconds following the restart and abandoned the game when more flares came down with no sign of intervention from the police.

The winners of the tie will play either Olympique Lyon or PSV Eindhoven in the semi-finals.

While considering Inter's punishment, UEFA may take into account that this is the second time this season that a Champions League match in Italy has ended prematurely.

AS Roma's home match with Dynamo Kiev in September was abandoned after referee Anders Frisk was hit by an object thrown from the crowd and the Italian club were ordered to play their next two Champions League games behind closed doors.

Four years ago Inter were fined 75,000 Swiss francs ($62,810) and ordered to play two European home games away from the San Siro after trouble at their UEFA Cup match with Spanish club Alaves.

The match was ended five minutes from the end of normal time in similar circumstances to Tuesday's derby when Inter fans hurled seating and plastic bottles on the pitch and clashed with police as they attempted to break into the directors box.

The ban made little impact on the hardcore 'ultras' as later in the same season they were banished from the San Siro for two Serie A games after fans threw a motor scooter down from the second tier in a league match against Atalanta.

In all three cases the trouble came from Inter fans in the North Stand in the section occupied by the club's hardcore ultra gang known as the 'Boys'.
