Need some help.

My magna has been guzzling up gas lately.

Just today, i travelled only 75 kms. (on my odometer) and suddenly, the bike

ran out of fuel! When i gassed up, it ran up to 10 liters! If my math is correct,

that's only 7.5 kms per liter. Ridiculous isn't it? The service manual said it should

do about 15kms/liter. My car has better mileage than my bike!

Any ideas on what's wrong with my fuel consumption?

Many thanks in advance.

one headlight>> maybe u can try take out ur spark plug and see wats the colour, if it's black and wet, ur carburettor might be overflow already. need to get the needles change. If it's not, then probably someone have stole ur petrol. try monitor it for a few more pump.

Thanks for the advice bro.

I had the plugs checked yesterday. The front plugs were indeed wet and black

while the rear ones were ok. Gonna have to check those needles today.

Does anybody know the stock size of the needles? They say its 40.

Can anybody confirm this?

Also, if your pipes are "open", does that mean that you have to make

the mixture rich? If you make it lean, you get lots of backfire and if

its too lean, you can blow a piston? How true is this?

Thanks.

Not too sure of the size of the needle, but ur mechanic should know.

Regarding the lean and rich, i thought if ur bike always back fire, it should be ur mixture is too rich thats y ur bike will always have unburn fuel that results in the back fire? Can some expert explain this. As for open pipe, i'm not too sure, but best to sent for tuning by the professional.

not too sure abt the rich and lean.... but it is always safer to lean towards rich... and less lean can cause some major $$ damage.....

if u can do it on ur own.. rich it out then get some professional advice......

Finally got the bike sorted.

We opened the carbs up and checked the jets.

Sure enough, they were tampered, maybe, by the previous mechanic. :nono:

The size of the jets were stock 40s but they had been rebored so they were

actually about 44s in size resulting in a very rich mix. My mechanic replaced them

with original 40 needles. We took it for a test run and immediately, the plugs started

to dry up and change color.

So last sunday, i took a 100 km country trip to monitor my fuel consumption.

Happy to say it was doing 16 kms/liter which is textbook specs for the Magna. :bounce:

Im ready for the National Bike Convention on friday in the north.

Its about 350 kms. away and will last for 3 days. Can't wait to go. :thumb:

Thanks guys.

Hi guys, just got back from the Philippine Annual Bike Convention in the north.

A total roundtrip trek of 860 kms. We took it in 6 hours including short stops

for petrol, rehydration and a quickie breakfast. Over 2,000 riders came and

we partied all night. We took our time going home. Made more stops and ate

more food! Took us 7 hrs to get home. A great and memorable ride.

At the hotel parking area.

Very concious of the fuel consumption of the Magna.

It was averaging only about 12-13 kms per liter which i think was still high.

A CB1300 super four was doing the same but he had almost twice the engine size.

I guess a few more tune-ups is still in the making.

It finally arrived. After 20 days, the chrome accessories i ordered from

the USA is finally here. Thanks to the SB Forum links to various accessory websites,

I was able to place an order via the internet.

Here's my favorite: Visors for the guages. Minimizes the glare. Looks sleek.

Its just a clamp-on type so i guess it'll fit most guages too.

Also got some chrome horn cover, radiator cap, oil plug, choke handle and bullet type

plate number screws. Got more on my wishlist but gotta save up again.

Cheers.

I went for my monthly servicing for my Slasher and saw this naked Magma 750. The is my bike shop's latest "Project X" which will take 2 weeks to complete. They bought a FL plate machine to strip and clean every single valve. The tank and mud guard already send for sanding and respray, still thinking what colour to put on it. The shop asked me to visit them and test out the bike when its done. Will take some photos if I am free then to take a peep, stay tune!

Next week, i'm going on my second road trip this year. Still up north to the summer capital of the Philippines, Baguio City. Its up in the mountains, about 250 kms. from Manila. We'll be riding for about 5 hours with about two stops in between. Bought myself an Oxford1 fabric saddlebags and installed a Hondaline crashguard on the bike.

Ive always wanted to go to Baguio City on a bike. The air is chilly and the twisties are smooth and flowing. But the best part is the scenery and the fresh smell of pine as you climb the mountain road.

I'll post some pics. Hope to ride with you guys here if you come and visit.

Cheers.

I crashed on Father's Day!

Had an accident while on my way home from a short ride to a volcano lake

resort south of Manila. Have a nasty road rash on my ride elbow. Ouch!!!!

Some frekkin' underbone cut across from a busy intersection. Braked hard

and the bike skidded on its right side for about 3 meters.

If you're still not a believer in crashguards, my bike and i are living proof that

it really, really works! Except for a slight scratch on the tip of the pipe and

the foot peg, no major damage to the forks, engine, signal lights and steering

wheel at all. The right crashguard was scraped and bent but it held on, allowing

me the needed time and the freedom to let go.

Father's Day will be so memorable.

Glad you and your bike are okay!

Anyway I've always been a big fan of the Magna, just wished they'll make a new one with Hydraulic valve lifters and shaft drive... if possible throw in gear-driven cams. I'll bet it'll just run forever then!

Thanks bro. The road rash has dried and is healing fast.

I found out that the brake rotor was bent because of the crash.

I brought it to the machine shop and they straightened it up.

The bikes back in form except for the crashguards which i have to re-order.

Too bad they discontinued the Magna in 2003. I guess having a V4 in times

of fuel crisis wasn't a good business move. Correct me if im wrong, but i heard

the last edition of Magna's were shaft-driven. A rare model if i ever get to see one.

Posted

Really? I'm not sure the later models had shaft drive....

Anyway there's some info on the bike's history here. Quite informative!

Hmmm, maybe it was the first generation Magna's that were shaft driven.

Thanks for the link.

I hope they come out with the fourth generation of Magna's with the 800cc VFR

Vtec engine and maybe dual front disc brakes. That would be a great looking bike.

Then again, i'd like to keep my model a bit longer since its the last of its kind.

It's like owning a classic or collector's item maybe.

You're welcome!

I'm not really a big fan of VTEC, my personal opinion is that on bikes, it is more of a gimmick than a real performance enhancer.

Another nice bike which have been discontinued is the Pacific Coast 800... sigh.

Somethings not right when they installed the jetkit.

1. Rough sound coming from the engine.

2. Backfire when you release the throttle.

I suspect a lean mix.

Im taking it for a long run this weekend.

I'd like to find out if my gas mileage improved.

Its been stormy weather here for the past week. I never really got to bring

the bike out for that long ride. But I brought it back to the bike shop because

it really didnt feel right.... backfires, no idling, strong vibrations & dead plugs.

Well after sitting there for 7 hours watching them work on my bike.

they finally got it right. They returned the original jets but used the new dynojet

adjustable needles and the new springs.

I guess that's the most important part of the kit anyway. Do you agree?

Now if only this typhoon weather clears up so I take my baby for a spin.

Just an update, guys.

After almost a month of stormy weather (especially on weekends!)

I was able to bring the bike out for a long test run to see if there was any

improvement on the fuel consumption after rejetting.

Well, its doing 15 kms per liter now in wide open road

but still a terrible 11 kms./liter in city and traffic.

I also noticed some muffled backfire when i deaccelerate.

Thats not right is it?

Any advice guys?

Thanks in advance.

Wow.That is seriously low. I have been hearing a 750CC Cruiser able to clock 25km for every Little on normal Road and even better on the NSHW?
