TA200 troubleshooting/preventive medicine AAR:

1. Backfiring aka Subaru WRX exhaust sound effect

Caused by either over-lean a/f mixture or high engine pressure caused by overfill of EO.

Status: Solved by reducing EO to proper levels (1L only & verify with dipstick). Sound is much less constipated and power delivery has become smoother.

2. Strange ticking sound when engine is running, indicative of loose timing chain (best case) or predetonation (knocking) - bad.

As the timing chain is practically new from the engine overhaul it's not exactly the correct diagnosis. Knocking also occurs on high compression engines running on low octane fuel. No matter how well we break in Phantom engines, they're never going to need more than 92 oct so this was ruled out as well.

Hamsterwhale suggested using oil thickening compounds as the top of the engine block (where the cam and timing chain resides) is not properly lubricated. But when I read his post I was preparing to head to Planet for Dr. Chong's expert review. Consider this preventive medicine as I'm running in engine none too gently.

Status: Still monitoring

Chong @ Planet did a test run and concluded nothing was wrong with the engine, although at first he thought it was knocking (predetonation). Suggested to just drive the bike anyway, as there was no concern of a critical failure.

He did something to my idle and carb settings which made the engine super-smooth and vibration free, though!

Hamsterwhale's diagnosis of improper lubrication was merited as after a few max. torque acceleration sessions from Yishun Dam and various traffic lights on the way home with relaxed cruising in between, the ticking sound disappeared.

With the Castrol oil being on various PK veterans' ban lists, a flush & EO change should provide better lube to the motor.

And does this engine need to be run hard occasionally to maintain proper lubrication? Makes sense, although small blocks like these are not the ones usually complaining (whereas you can break a superbike engine from not revving it up for long periods of time, go figure).

I can verify that this ticking sound was generated after a session of deliberate high RPM testing on Neo Tiew Rd, and it was resolved by successive sessions of short shifting then flooring it for max. low end torque, which this engine appears to like.

Kalyan pai sei i have no ideal wad is a [ predetonation (knocking) - bad. ]

Can kindly take a pix and show me wad is it?

Cos i scare:( this has being there when i warm up my bike but not really there when it's running after sometime = engine is warm liao

thank you for all your support..

thank you.

alamkak.. dun need change account nahz. haiyo.. haha... I'm still trying to improvee my oiler.. shorter path for oil to run maybe a good thing too. currently my oiler working well. But path super long. not instead pump oil then oil flow out..

Update on "knocking"

As Ah Chong says my shish-shish-shish sound is just the piston moving.

If you want to hear real knocking, turn your idle screw all the way in (anticlockwise). This engine does not stall easily but as the idle setting goes very low, knocking will start to occur (due to over-lean mixture?). It sounds like knocking on your door, very distinctive. Do not run the engine this way :3

I opened the tap (idle screw) up until the engine sounded healthy.

I also encountered a huge brand new Honda Shadow with very loud pistons, so I know at least some sound from the moving piston is acceptable.

Washing guild members: Overzealous washing/polishing may cause your idle settings to change by accident :)

Hahaha, it will! That's why we must be sensitive to the parts that we are washing! Hahaha....

Yep, my Phantom is a prissy mistress. Loves to flash her silver lined kneehighs to RXZ riders and make them stall at traffic lights.

Cute :3

dotz so bad....:dot:

anyway is there going to be a meet up this time round? i really want to go and see and be there to see all the wonderful mod there is to see

Is your Phantom showing her "bad mood"?

Erratic RPMs, drastic loss of power with seemingly no reason? There's probably a good physics explanation if you care to do some NASA style troubleshooting.

I was out with YangKru today - after a brief 30 min stop I restarted my engine and got a very strange engine note that appears to fluctuate from 500 to 1500 rpm.

PureIce68 has also told me a story where his Phantom suddenly had no acceleration despite revving the engine in second gear.

For the first case, I had expended a full tank of petrol and completed my journey on reserve. Refuelled 9 + litres of fuel in one shot and switched back to main tank.

The low fuel pressure was scary but not worrying as I simply detuned the idle, put her back on reserve (where fuel pressure seems okay) and back to main feed again. A couple minutes of spongy throttle response and all was well again. YangKru suggested not 'overfilling' the tank - and this issue may stem from the reserve tank "recharging" itself?

For PureIce's case, it's likely the clutch "having no bite" until the engine assembly (and oil) fully warms up. I've read that some Japanese built big cc machines in the US have this issue.

This issue can be further studied in the following manner:

When first moving off in the morning with a cold engine, note the biting point.

Then when the engine is warm, note the biting point again. You'll likely notice it takes far less effort to launch the bike successfully.

Bro, at that time, my bike have been running like at least 25mins and cannot be the biting point problem right?

Nope, however...

YangKru and I were riding all morning. We just stopped at an exec. condo in Sengkang for about 20 mins and when I restarted the fuel pressure was highly erratic. With a little bit of massaging the throttle and a drag start from the traffic lights the "bad mood" was gone as suddenly as it appeared. The only possible cause indeed is fuel related as cycling back to reserve then to main tank again seemed to get the pressure back up and the driving did the rest.

Thankfully, or I would return to Planet Chong lol.

Wow I hadn't thought of foreign objects! Thankfully I haven't had that problem resurface since last Sat.

I might stop at Planet this Saturday morning to get my oil changed. Looks like the motor's well broken in @ 1600km. Doesn't really sound like a constipated little HD anymore but more like a typical tofu smooth Honda :3

What's a good recommendation for a mineral oil?

Bayshore Condo - it's just off the ECP to.... Bayshore Rd. As usual we can arrange for convoy to meet up at a central location (such as Bishan) for easy navigation.

Call/sms/pm any one of us if you need further details.

Btw, not sure who is going to have the last set of hazards but you can have the last set. I have my kanang guni horn to ward off monkeys, morons and motorists alike (proven effective :D)
