Hi Shaiek, i believe other posters may have shared some good advice to you, mainly covering budget and also the main purpose of the bike. I would also like to share some fair considerations i have when purchasing my bike when i passed my Class 2 couple years back. Apart from budget, and also purpose, i want to point our further that whether you like to do customizations or modding to your bike as compared to a stock bike. Purchasing brake levers, footrests, or even exhaust pipes all costs additional money and you have to factor these into the cost when deciding to buy your bike. A japanese make can cost lower, however all the add-ons may increase your financial burden significantly.

Another point to highlight is the reliability of the bike and the frequency of repair. I dont wish to name any bike brands, but it is definitely better to check with your friends to find out the brands that save you the ease of repair. My personal experience with BMW gave me a piece of mind during these 2 years, cuz of their excellent after-sales service staff. I think this gave me great confidence in their brand, and their quality product. So do your own homework.

Last point to share is your monthly installments. If you purchase the bike in full, no problem with payment. However if you make payments monthly, please consider the financial burden ontop of the customizations/higher petrol consumption. I also believe that insurance premium costs are higher than Class 2A and 2B, so this will add another couple hundred to your yearly bike expense.

The purchase price of the bike may be tempting, but doing homework will alleviate some of these concerns you may have. Good luck

Hi, xiaozozo. Thank you for sharing your valuable insights.

Regards to modifications, I am not really a fan. Even my current bike is still the same as to the one that I purchased three years ago. So I do not foresee this to be a major issue. Nonetheless, it is a valid point for consideration.

As for insurance, maintenance and petrol cost, I have included them in my decision making. Insurance cost will definitely be a huge variance from my existing policy which is expected. Petrol cost should be about the same, just that the amount will be higher per top up but the frequency will be lesser due to a bigger tank. As for maintenance, I have asked the salesperson and I find it reasonable. Besides, the major maintenance is over a longer mileage, as I was informed.

Just to share with you, I have decided to go for BMW F800 GS Adventure. However, currently, the 2017 model is being reviewed by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and yet to be available for sale. The new bike will come with some accessories (including boxes) and several upgrades from previous models. The price is estimated to be around $35k (all in including insurance).

I agree with you that the service from BMW is definitely excellent. Although I plan to settle fully in cash, the salesperson shared with me that there would be some savings by taking a loan instead. At the same time, I read some posts by members who mentioned that it is wiser to have some cash on hand in case of emergency.

Ride safe, buddy.

Hi, Yahmarhuh. I appreciate the encouragement and is a little excited, anticipating the approval from the authorities.

Hi, smallcar. I am looking forward to the new ride. I'll bear in mind the safety precautions nonetheless.

Have a wonderful weekends, all. Be safe, ride safe.

Hi, Yahmarhuh. The timing couldn't have been worse. I was taken aback when I read the budget this morning.

I was discussing with a fellow rider earlier. We estimated the bike's OMV to be around $16k. After calculating, it's an additional $7k with GST inclusive; $10k for ARF alone. Singapore is really all about paying.

Hi, blacksilver. I trust the price will be adjusted rather quickly too. Nobody wish to lose out in this world.

Ride safe, all.

Shaiek,

Importers can strip the bike of accessories and install locally. That will make the bike bare bone and bring down the OMV quite abit for bikes with OMV over 10K. U're essentially paying double the price for the accessories.

I think dealers will partly absorb the ARF too.

You can also consider bidding ur COE in the current bidding exercise as I foresee many buyers pulling out to reassess their finances. This should drive COE down unless bike shops anticipate this and bid the COEs themselves to keep. Successful COE are given 6 months to register ur bike.

First time our government introduce such immediate implementation. It caught the buyers and dealers off guard. I was at my bike shop yesterday and the shop owner making lots of noise. He told me some buyers that have already gotten their COE and are waiting for the shipment now will have to pay more. This not only effects the buyer but the loan company they took from too. They cant back out as the COE is already under their name.

Just a thought, if you already sign the purchase agreement and now have to add extra omv value, does the shop need to honor the sales agreement? If you look at class 2 bikes, that could be an increase of 6 - 8k more.

i am curious at this also , since all sign and paid and waiting for the bike

now how ? bike shop eat ?

or too bad law change so consumer have to reaccess and eat the additional?

U think the increase of ARF will stop pple frm buying that desired shiny macho bike?

Well, the sudden increase of COE from few hundred bucks to $6k didnt.

No big deal right, most will just take a bigger, longer loan.

Thats the singaporean way of life.

Probably buyer took a personal loan instead of a vehicle loan?

Hi, Yahmarhuh. I doubt many will take the trouble to strip the bike, to help reduce the price. Most would just bring in as it is. Eventually, sellers only add margin over cost and buyers reluctantly accept the stated price.

At the same time, COE prices will not drop. It is just the typical Singaporean way. Due to an increase in price, they will fear a further increase and hence rush to lock in now.

Hi, chiadennis. That is a bit worrisome. I cannot imagine how the buyer would feel having to fork out a few extra grand when they have all agreed on the price previously. Perhaps, some shop would absorb it out of goodwill for those customers.

Hi, wait4me. Most probably the shop will work out some deal with the customers. In the worst case scenario, they will absorb out of goodwill. Still, if customers were forced to pay, will they have the right to lodge a complaint against the shop?

Regards to the loan tenure, 10 years is rather too long. I would rather pay off my loan soonest, bearing in mind the cumulating interest.

Hi, MR BIKER. You were correct. The price instead heads north in the latest bidding, almost reaching $7k.

Hi, prettymussel. I believe you are also feeling frustrated just as I am. Still, do take it easy. This is the price for living in an "efficient" country.

Hi, 736cc. The changes is not to the COE but the tax system, which I trust is payable to the authorities. The shop might take the opportunity to mark up but most of the benefit does not flow to them.

For the 10 years loan, it is perhaps a personal loan, as reize said. Even the loan for cars is only up to a maximum of 7 years now.

Well, the important thing is to plan well and hopefully all will work out eventually. Ride safe, all.

Shaiek, hope u will get some kind of a deal as well!

If u can wait for awhile, I do believe the COE will come down a little bit not just because of the ARF but also the non leakage to the open Cat. But don't think it will as drastic to say 3K level. The leakage to open CAT will stop in May. I do expect for it to go to under 6K few biddings after that. Probably not enough to entice you to delay ur purchase though.

Liverpool revival has started....

Hi, kzone. Thanks for the encouragement, although I'm not really optimistic about any deal. Anyway, I can put off my purchase a little longer. Currently, I am busy at work and I might need to travel overseas come May. So, in a way, I am not in a hurry but who can say, sometimes the hand is just itchy.

Let's hope COE prices will drop as you predicted. At least other fellow riders, especially those new riders, won't have to spend so much.

Cheers!
