Windows 7 Arriving Early, Microsoft to Show Off New OS on October 28

by Scott Gilbertson, posted on Webmonkey

http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/5968/win72wo5.jpg

UPDATE (5/Jun/2009): The release date has been confirmed to 22nd of October. Scroll down to the latest post entries for up-to-date information.

Yes, there is a successor to the current Windows Vista: Microsoft is indeed planning to debut "Windows 7" ahead of schedule.

The company will take the wraps off Windows 7 on October 28, when Senior Vice President of Windows Steven Sinofsky will show off the next-generation OS during a keynote at Microsoft’s Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles.

Developers attending the conference will go home with a pre-beta copy of Windows 7.

As for what you can expect, look for evolutionary, not revolutionary changes. Leaked screenshots posted earlier this month shows that "Windows 7" looks a little bit like Vista, and official previews from the Windows 7 blog even confirm those suspicions.

Windows 7 will be based on the same kernel that’s in Vista, though Microsoft has promised the usual “enhancements” as well as possible speedy enhancements.

While the OS may not have too much to offer in the way of exciting new features, there is one upside — Windows 7 probably won’t require you to frustratingly buy new hardware. Read: less incidences of "incompatible this-thats..."

The recycled kernel also means your external devices should remain compatible (provided, of course, Vista drivers exist for your product).

So far we really know more about what won’t be in Vista’s successor than what will. For instance Microsoft has already said that that many of its baked-in software offerings — Windows Mail, Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Movie Maker — won’t be part of Windows 7. Instead, the company plans to push the Windows Live equivalents as downloadable add-ons.

If you’re dying to know what the Windows 7 desktop looks like, Microsoft’s corporate blog has some previews in a post that covers what Starting, Launching and Switching will look like in the new system (I hint again: it looks a lot like Vista).

While we’ll have to wait until Mr. Sinofsky shows it in action next month, at least for now, our suspicion is that Microsoft is following the lead of Apple and many Linux OS'es, which have also shifted focus lately from new features to making sure that existing features “just work.”

While it may not make for tons of excitement, it just might be a "much better" operating system.

Versioning-wise, it's different. XP is Windows version 5, Vista is v6

In general, it's also different. We're talking about huge incompatibilities with so many devices and apps when one upgrades from XP to Vista.

windows is really 1 f**ked up OS.

using Mac OS, but no choice stil hav to use back Windows OS sometimes...

OS X is an operating system even I can "relax" on.

No need to be a power user, and it feeds you with so much eye candy and exciting apps that I can't simply stop using it :p

thats the reason why some(if not most) windows users stick to previous releases... fyi, XP is now on SP3.

i have a fren who is doing serious work on his com and guess wat... he's still using win2000, not tat he's on obsolete hardware, its the speed and stability tat newer OSs cant promise. according to my fren, his com has nvr crashed for the past 3yrs.

come to think of it when we do serious stuff such as video editing, do we really need fancy eye-candy features like aero?

MS haven't even sort out the rubbish in Vista and now launching new OS :slapforehead:

I dun think they gonna even bother with Vista. Its like a failed project if u ask me. Probably starting with fresh codes...

Guys, if you read their blogs carefully, if ya wanna put it into negative connotation they're actually "clearing up the rubbish" that Vista left behind with the release of Windows 7.

In other words, it's an all-new -- but same 'ol -- operating system.

Looks almost like its predecessor though, to name just one of its many traits.

I was hoping they would blow me away with inspiration with version 7.

Maybe probably a couple more years down the road... :-/

xp started out sucky too, but the SP managed to solve most of the issue.

hw cum they not doing the same for vista? cant they release SPs instead of coming out an new OS which uses the same kernal as Vista?

reason is simple, they dun profit by releasing SP to solve the issues. they profit by making u buy the "NEW" OS.

22 October consumer release confirmed for Windows 7;

will RTM in July

by Ed Bott for CNet news (Original article)

A Microsoft spokesperson just confirmed for me that the official date on which Windows 7 will be available for general purchase is October 22, 2009. The RTM code will be delivered to partners at the end of July.

In addition, Microsoft has confirmed its plans to make an upgrade option available for PC makers to offer customers who purchase a new PC with Windows Vista between the beginning of the “Tech Guarantee” period and the general-availability date.

Microsoft’s press release with details of the announcement is now available. The official word came in a speech by Steve Guggenheimer, Corporate Vice President of the OEM Division, in a speech at the Computex tradeshow in Taipei:

Today during a keynote address at Computex 2009 in Taipei, Microsoft’s OEM Division Corporate Vice President Steve Guggenheimer revealed that the company is confident with the progress made with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, and that as a result, Microsoft will deliver Release to Manufacturing (RTM) code to partners in the second half of July. Windows 7 will become generally available on Oct. 22, 2009, and Windows Server 2008 R2 will be broadly available at the same time.

“As we’ve said many times, quality is our primary goal,” Guggenheimer said. “We announce each milestone once we’re confident of where we are in the development cycle and that it is ready to be shared with customers and partners. We’ve received great feedback from our partners who are looking forward to offering Windows 7 to their customers in time for the holidays.”

In addition to this, Guggenheimer announced that Microsoft will make available an upgrade option, so partners can offer customers the ability to purchase a Windows Vista-based PC and install Windows 7 when it’s ready.

“Microsoft has been working closely with partners to help our mutual customers be able to enjoy the many benefits of Windows 7,” he said. “With that in mind, we’re excited to say that there will be a Windows upgrade program available. Consumers can buy that new PC, whether for a student heading off to college or just because they need a new one, and know they’ll get Windows 7 as part of the deal.”

The actual start date for the program will be announced when it is ready for consumers, and partners are ready to provide details to customers.

Further details on Windows 7 pricing and the technology guarantee program are expected by the end of June.

been on the rc since it came out, and i'm really liking what i see.

the new taskbar has been combined very effectively with aero, and as a result its pretty damn awesome.

the gadgets are now movable, no longer constrained to the sidebar, and as such has become convenient and unobstrusive.

the keyboard shortcuts, if you bother to learn them, have made window manipulation easier, and on a related note, movements of windows by mouse has become more intelligent.

there are other improvements that make this OS surpass xp, which is seriously obsolete in tech terms.

all in all, 7 seems to have a tinge of mac in it. i'm not complaining though. *grin*
