250cc = lighter, slighter better underseat storage

400cc = more power, resale value is subjective...

End of day, up to individual's needs and preference!

I think I've said before that when I bought my 250, they only had that cc and also the 125ccs...... I tried the 250 and I am comfortable with it. As for the rest of the mp3 riders who chose the 250 instead of the 400, I wouldn't actually know why but I bet they have their reasons too.... I don't intend to upgrade to the 400cc though.

Some uncle on an mp3 250 rode up to me while I was about to top petrol at a shell station and was telling me that he doesnt understand why his front tyres are wearing out like so damn super fast. His milage looks like in the 5000 only. And true enuf, both of them were indeed a tad worn out.

What puzzled me was that he said that he pumped air of higher pressure on the front as compared to the rear. He also reiterated that the agent told he to do so.... I told him about how I pumped mine and he doesnt seem convinced. By the look of his tyres, it doesnt seem to be of Pirellis or Michelins.... I hope he find a way out of his misery....

there's a lot of weight in front, so it's not surprising to me that they're wearing out faster than on regular bikes. unless you tell me one side is wearing out faster than the other, then i'd say uneven pressure is the culprit. otherwise, i believe it's the normal wear.

what about you blackpiper, what's your mileage and how're the fronts holding up? my bike's still under 2k so can't tell yet.

i read on the MV forum the rear ones on the 250 wears out really fast. and i'm not surprised also when all you have is that tiny 12" rubber pushing all that weight around.

as blackpiper mentioned, the 250 came out first. those days don't have 400 or Fuoco. that's why those who wanted an MP3 would've bought it already when the 400 finally came out about a year later.

No, as per wat the uncle said, both his front are like wearing out super fast together and his rear are like still good. But anyway,i think he will find his way out coz he was a bit hard to please too.

As for my bike, the rear wears out faster than the fronts. Already done 28000km for a year and a half. So far changed the rear trice and not even once on the front. Weird uh, but its true.....

Maybe the uncle is super hard braker.... always use lots of front brake... :cheeky:

wah, how on earth that uncle ride man? i think there is only one explanation and i believe his front wheels are out of alignment. probably they're "toe in" or "toe out". good luck to him!

To me, the 250 works just fine in the city and on Singapore roads.

I didn't see the need to pay more for more power but another 40kg of weight, higher fuel consumption and a bit less of underseat storage.

If you're going to resell any new bike, you're going to have to take a big hit no matter which bike.

What's the air pressure you put into your front and back tires, sir?

i own the 400 but the fuel consumption isn't as high as i feared. i used to get 220km on my Runner VXR200 (7.5l tank, roughly 30km/l). now i'm getting 280km on my MP3 (12l tank, roughly 23km/l). So for a bike that's double the capacity of my last bike the fuel consumption is roughly only 40% more.

I'm still running-in the engine so I expect the consumption to improve further as all the parts loosen up and sit in.

For me it's a good trade off because i pillion my wife a lot so the extra power is really worth it. Plus, 34 horsepower for that kind of consumption level is very good. And I think the 250's consumption isn't very far from the 400's figures, somewhere around 25km/l.

I totally agree the 250 is more suited for city riding, but I got the 400 because I intend to ride up M'sia one of these days, and I believe I'll struggle to keep up if I'd bought the 250.

if you're still keen on the 250, i'll advise you to wait for the new model that has a 14" rear wheel, like on the 400. On the current 125 and 250 the rear wheels are only 12". a lot of owners in the US complained that they wear out extremely fast, roughly around 3k-5k. Hardly surprising with that puny rubber having to push all that weight around. Why'd u think Piaggio is upgrading it? Even my Runner had a 13".:thumb:

Some claim that the tires on the 250 wear out fast. On the other hand, two owners in Singapore - blackpiper and I - have attested that our first set of front tires are running just fine and have yet to be replaced.

No question about that. I am still waiting for my initial front tyres thread to wear out. I cud see the gradual wearing out but it's really a slow process.

Generally speaking, a scooter is slightly higher maintenance as there is more parts in the transmission to change.

But some of the parts also can last longer than others:

e.g Variator/Clutch/Clutch Spring is more durable than the Belt/Rollers/Roller clips.

And previously I was riding a Phantom, the cost of the tyres are higher than my present Burgman 400. So that's an advantage, but for MP3 you got 1 extra wheel so it may balance out or slightly more expensive.

Stares are pretty common if you own an mp3. I had encountered many a times when I stopped at traffic light junctions whereby people and usually childrens pointing at my 2 front wheels to their siblings, friends, dad, mum etc etc... On severals occasion I did mentioned when I 1st got this bike that I was stopped and chatted by almost anyone at various places eg. petrol stations, carparks and I'm cool about all that. But once a while I still get those weird questions and I got one just a day or two ago. This guy in the mid 40s I guess, came up to me and asked me if my bike could play mp3 songs..... I just stared at him in amazement and just wondered how the heck people will ever come up with all these questions. The irony is I didnt even see a hint of any smirk on his face which made me wonder that he couldn't be serious right..... But anyway, I just shook my head at him and left....

he was trying to be funny. if he knows that mp3 is a song format that means he's not stupid. i won't be so nice like you. i might even tell him our mp3s come with 3.5G wireless so that we can download song whenever we pass ERP gantry. one song one dollar. just deduct from cashcard.
