[Archived - 2006] My solo Harley adventure in the US...

Harlow to all my PK buddies... kiamh here signing in from Appleton,WI,USA... :D

Creating this thread to share my awesome experience of a solo Harley adventure in the US on 15~16 August 2006.

Most of the regulars here know me as the HD-crazed Phantom rider  Anyway, when my company sent me to the US for a training/working trip, I grabbed the chance to explore the HD dealership in Appleton. I had to walk 3 miles in the afternoon sun to get from my hotel to the HD dealer, but it was a walk full of expectation & hope... (hardcore hor...)

As expected, I overshot my budget buying HD merchandise :p As I was leaving, I spotted the counter with a cute HD salesgirl. Curious, I went to enquire the rental rates... OMG, weekday rates for a Sportster was only US$50! (US$75 for a Big Twin). Optional full coverage insurance cost another US$40. DAMN! I couldn't let this chance get away, so I signed the documents & waited for them to get ready my rental ride, a 2006 Glacier White XL1200C (Sportster Custom)

Anyway, after a quick review by the cute salesgirl, I straddled the Harley & fired it up for the first time…. WOOOOO HOOOOO! :lovestruck: A feeling beyond description, a dream fulfilled (partially)… I twisted the throttle & off I went on a trial ride in the carpark. After getting a thumbs up from the salesgirl (& getting used to ride on the right side of the road), I went off into the wide open spaces of the USA…

24 hours was all I had to enjoy my first HD ride, alone & in a foreign country no less. My only possessions were my backpack, a half cap helmet & a sudden rush of adventure spirit. I didn’t have a map & I didn’t know where to go, but I didn’t care… I WAS RIDING A HARLEY… :lovestruck: :cheer:

I spent the next 4 hours or so riding aimlessly around Appleton, Menasha, Greenville, Black Creek etc…. stopping only to take photos…Throughout the day, the feeling of the wind in my face, the feel & sound of the legendary VTwin rumble was just an UNBELIEVABLE RUSH!! Finally, I returned to my hotel at around 9pm, forced to stop by the dark skies…

The next day, I rode the HD to my training class. My colleagues were almost as excited as me, straddling the bike to take photos. One of them even commented that I was “crazy”.. Ha ha ha, they just didn’t understand

My class ended at 230pm that day, giving me a final 3 hours before I had to return the bike. Again, I rode around the county roads, just enjoying the ride & the sights & sounds of the US neighbourhood. Along the roads, I passed many other HD riders, even getting to see some rare bikes that might never hit Singapore shores: namely the Valkyrie Rune & the Suzuki M109R

My adventure ended on 16 August 2006 5:30pm when the 24 hr rental expired. But the wonderful memories of my solo ‘tour’ of the sights & sounds of USA on a HD will never be forgotten…

Go for it Alex, if you ever go to the US, just DO IT, the experience is worth every cent you spend :thumb:

Just remember to bring your Spore license (with Class 2) & a credit card (for the fully refundable US$2000 deposit)

For me, I tried the 2002 Fatboy on their 100th Anniversary 4 years ago in Australia. That was about 1 year after I got my license, not 1 month! Worse still, I got no camera

yup, considering the great experience, US$90 for rental inclusive of insurance is really worth it...

The US$2000 is refundable (as long as you don't crash the bike :p)

Haha... I never give up a chance to visit HD dealers. Wanna have a good inspection of the VRod, just visit the Singapore showroom in Leng Kee.

IMHO, the Night Rod looks cooler though.

If you like it, just go for it
