any bros here owns a nuvi 550... can review?

tot of getting one coz my current old pda/gps's batt kinda dying liow (lasts

There are quite a few posts on the Nuvi 550 in this thread.

Nuvi 550 is the best bang GPS for motorbike. It doesn't have all the whistles and bells of the Zumo but it's also much easier on the pocket.

Having said that, only you know what you want as some functions/features which are essential to your usage may not be found in the Nuvi 550, such as bluetooth, then the Nuvi 550 is not for you.

read through the pages but mostly very general comments, also read the reviews in amazon but they're mostly good feedback... was trying to find some faults to suppress my impulse to get it... hahahaha :D

went eastgear this evening and was told the bike mount is out of stock. but still can't decide whether to buy from them (pay more for the local warranty) or get from amazon.com...

gps set & simple mount adds to abt US$245 (approx S$375 @1.53), add vpost shipping to Sg abt $35, add paid Jerome map abt $50... totalling about S$460; saves abt $109 o_O

did i miss out something?

Eastgear offers you their shop warranty, and not local Garmin warranty. On the matter of warranty, it will depend on your confidence in Garmin products.

Jerome Map is only USD20.00.

Hi

I had bought the 550 through Amazon and got the RAM mount, cradle, power cable to connect direct to the battery and with some other stuff as well.

You need not pay $50 use Jerome's map Malfreemaps works just as well. I had loaded with some other maps around the region and it works fine with no problem.

But the only thing you need to purchase locally is the SD card it does not come with it. You may want to purchase the charger and the usb cable(if you don't have one) as well it also does not come in the package.

This is what comes with the box:

Vehicle suction cup mount (used this on the windscreen of my scooter wuth no major problems.)

Vehicle power cable

thanks Advrider, looks like buying from amazon n ship to vpost is viable.

btw, someone posted in amazon that we can also use the car's universal mini-usb charger (http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/AO57ZSBGZHCFE/ref=cm_cr_pr_auth_rev?ie=UTF8&sort_by=MostRecentReview) if we already have one for our MP3 or PDA. but i guess buying the garmin unit is a safer move.

out of curiosity, how many pp actually use the gps while riding in the rain?

especially for scooters with windshields, shielded parts of the dash sometimes don't even get wet if its just drizzling.

the reason i'm asking is someone actually suggested i get the normal non-waterproof units that will save a hell lot.

i used to ride with my Nuvi200W. You just have to shield it away from the rain as much as possible, and i have a zip-lock plastic bag on standby to slip it over the GPS should the rain get too heavy.

Since my unit is already waterproof I just leave it as it is and continue riding need not worry about it. That's the advantage of having a waterproof unit compared to the non-waterproof.

ic... having a waterproof is unit is obviously very convenient. but the BIG front, slim body & competitive pricing of the non-waterproof ones are very tempting

i'm wondering if it could be difficult to see what's in the smallish screen while riding in the rain due to droplets on the screen and also helmet's visor. light drizzles should be no problem :p

----

aiya... decision overridden coz going touring tomolo n wet weather is anticipated.

going down to eastgear to pick up the 550 later... forgoing savings for convenience n "express delivery"

i dont agree with what u say, i hv mine waterproof unit at very attractive price. the most important-ly, my unit is 5" display & can run garmin, igo8, amigo, & mapking.

yo bro, pls dun quote me out of context leh... if you read my previous posts, that remark was made in comparison between the nuvi 550 (3.5" screen) and the other nuvi models (e.g. nuvi 255W) with larger screens; not sweeping across all makes n models... coz to be fair, there're so many different ones out there... not possible to know all right :D

what make n model is that you have and what kind of attractive price... care to share n make me "gian"? :cheeky:

1st & for all pls let me clarify, im here talking about PNDs (personal navigation device).

im just trying to compare cons & pros for most of machine.

mine is china made PND that come with 5" display & runs on WinCE5.0, like most of other machine as well except Garmin.

If today u come ask me, who is the best PND? i will say is still garmin to be frank due to maps support. But software friendly wise i will hv to give it to NNG iGO8 or Amigo.

lets dont drag this too far, what is cons & pros about my machine?

pros:

weatherproof

5" big display

pricing (i cant tell how much but is slightly less then half a K)

can run any navigation software i like (no joke!) (i even hv mapking virtual with me now.)

cons:

unknown branding that quite hard to get trust by ppl (sorry to tell but espeacially singaporean)

about other things pls dont flame me.. :cheeky:
