oh, the zumo has it...they didn't tell me. all they told me was that the zumo costs >1000SGD. gee. so you guys just look at the screen then? in that case can get that little gizmo looking one...nuvi 205 or something...

Not they don't tell you. Just that they don't know how to tell you...:(

The voice instructions can get very irritating because it will warn you that you are exceeding the speed limits, and it can be as frequent as every 30s. Even in the car, often i mute it.

:)

i also mute the fella... anyway to off just the speed warning or change the warning speed to higher kph?

can't remember the shop names but they are on 4th floor and 5th floor.

i also went to parisilk at holland village today to enquire. they are selling that nuvi 760 at 550. he also told me they are releasing a new product (nuvi 765) tomorrow and that one does send the driving instructions to the bluetooth headset. he says to call him tomorrow to check price. he thinks it will be between 400-500sgd. i'll check and see.

at parisilk, they are selling the zumo for less than 1k. so far its the cheapest place and they are very honest people. so if you are interested can try there.

i also saw another one today called the edge 701 (garmin also) at parisilk. apparently designed for bikes. not sure if bikes mean bicycle or motorcycle but it looks nice and compact. but i think it costs 700+.

sounds like the 765 might just be the right one. and he told me someone can do the bracket for 100+sgd and it is VERY sturdy at speed...i'm getting excited!!

hmmm... personally, i would expect a "designed for bike" model to be wet weather friendly :p

i know seng kwang can fabricate a quality bracket to suit your needs, pay n you'll get your design.

IMHO, for $100+, i'ld rather get a RAM mount set which is likely cheaper and easy to remove :p

the problem with designed for bike types is that they are way more expensive than the normal ones...so it will come down to a compromise.

I removed the POI completely and muted the set too. It gets really irritating if use it in the car.

ya lor... i like the bigger 4.3" screen and TTS of nuvi 255W (budget set too) but becoz of the weather proof need for biking, bought the more expensive n smaller screen 3.5" nuvi 550

Updates from the PC Show

East gear has some new models out for the HOLUX 62 & 62 Pro

Both have 5" screens with 3D maps.

$399 and $499 respectively.

They have also got a brand called PAPAGO, pwred by a Samsung processor.

$299 for a 4.3" Z880/

Batt life is up to 3 hrs though.

The new Nuvi 765 is also out

Has bluetooth and mp3 play back.

Nice 3D mapping and junction views.

But a thing to note, not all parts of the map are in 3D.

Till date, only part of the city has 3D buildings.

More updates are expected from garmin.com.sg

East gear is selling it for $699 with the Ozzie maps

While the official garmin booth has it for $549

With freebies worth $96 making up a additional mount and a AC charger.

Comes with Teleatlas and Malsing maps.

The official booth is by NaviCom.

Anyone has any experience dealing with them?

Most people go through life following the crowd.

Others think for themselves.

They go their own way.

Could it be that the track log memory is full ?

went to check out the gps today at funan...the folks tell me that you can't get the gps navigation directions to go to your bluetooth headset. is that true?? if so, how do you guys hear the instructions?

for the Zumo, u can choose to either use a bluetooth headset (expensive) or just a simple earphone. I bought those with an in-ear earpiece which also works kinda like a ear plug. The Zumo can play music while you ride (really very nice) and then when it gives directions, it immediately lowers the music volume so u hear the voice prompts.

IMO, it's not safe to ride and watch the screen unless you mount it at a position that is just below your line of sight in the middle, so that u don't have to take your eyes off the road. mine is mounted to the left near my handlebars, so looking is not really recommended. quick glances in sparse traffic is fine, but not in crowded city riding.

is this the zumo 550? strange, cos i don't get any speed warnings. is it in a POI file or something?

i'm sure u can turn it off, cos i don't get it.

There is a way to use car-based GPS but have it waterproof without expensive mounting points.

Givi S850 bag

http://www.givi.co.uk/News-en/S850---GPS-Universal-holder

Fits on the handlebar, especially scooters.

The clear cover is waterproof. So you can fit in a car-type GPS receiver and not get worried about inclement weather.

Dunno how much it costs. Was interested but considering Mah's prices (got a severe shock when I was asking about their T459 laptop bags), decided on a RAM mount instead.

These warnings are "gpi" files which are stored in the "POI" folder. These are not standard Garmin software, and they are not factory preloaded, but are created by very talented, and also very free GPS hobbyists.

If you have that "speedtrap" gpi file installed, it will come on, and i have yet to come across a way which you can selectively disable or enable these warning gpi files. Meantime, the only way, i know of, is to remove the relevant gpi file from the POI folder in the internal memory.

A cheaper option is to approach one of these canvas maker in Sungei Road area, and get them to sew one of these pouch with a clear front cover.

Some of these shops are using heat seal, so it's 100% waterproof.
