best value, bike model to learn maintenance

Hi all who have done it,

 

I'm looking to learn maintenance, by practicing taking a bike apart & putting it back together. it's part of a plan to do long motorcycle trips in the future, that will require hands on when the bike breaks down along the way

 

What is the best value, bike model to do this?

 

I have seen guys refurbishing honda nighthawks into cafe races. however, it seems to be rare with noone selling these days. are the 'classics' like rxk & rxz good choices for my purposes?

I m wondering any peeps her maintain their Super 4 Bike by themselves ? would like to learn how to

It is best to understand very very very basic parts should you wish to embark on this journey like:-

-changing your clutch and throttle wire by yourself and finding the biting point and freeway slack adjustment

-changing your own spark plugs

-changing your own EO and filter if it exist

this alone will require a wrench/spanner or both, and maybe even a spark plug tool (on fairing bikes, screwdriver, allen keys...)

 

Taking apart a bike, it is a big risk i will say if you are new because certain engine parts have gasket in between the metals and are usually not for reuse. To replace, you got to scrap and clean the metals really clean without risk of cracking of over-scuffing them.

 

You are better off finding a trustworthy mechanic to do up your bike (i.e. electrical system (Charging), lighting system, EO service, Spark plug, air filter, valve clearance if necessary) before leaving for longer road trips.
