Hi guys,

My XJR milage is reaching 14000Km, is it about time to go for valve clearance adjustment liao?

Do i need to bring the bike to yamaha servicing centre to do this servicing? If not then which bike maintenance shops at Ubi or Kaki bukit is good at valve clearance adjustment?

Also need to know how much i need to pay for this servicing.

Thanks a lot

hi targetboard

according to hearsay its advisable to do valve clearance on a basis or mayb 10 to 20k intervals, while some advise to do when the ticking sound becomes too obvious. so dun tink there is a hard and fast rule, as usual.

i had mine done at Ubi area at ard 30k+, after the 1st had been done at 10k+. from MY OWN PERSONAL judgement the ticking did go away, and i dun remember how long the remedy can last.

there are mechs other than at hong leong who can perform the task, but ultimately they need parts b4 anyhing can be done. the cost is easily in the 100s region, if not more, cos its not a pick-and-go task and high chance we haf to leave the bike for a good day. hope this helps a bit

ermm.. if u interested in the mech i had mine done can PM me cheers

hi furbykong, really need ur advise here. intend to get an old xjr400 (fp plate) from a guy here but after start engine, can hear a very obvious gduk gduk sound which are rather similar to a loose tappet, only thing that the sound came from around bottom ctankshaft area.

is this normal for the xjr or something is seriously wrong? i dun wan to buy the bike then end up with expensive overhaul & engine repairs.

Thanks a lot for any info, really appreciate it. cheers....

hi sss-man, we r learning from each other as best we can

from yur description if the sound is high-pitched, like tapping a ball-point pen against the wall then it might b an off valve clearance. no idea abt the older models, but HEARD that engine wise there isnt much of a change btw the old and the new. this prob is faced by a few of other owners (new models), especially starting when cold and after a considerable mileage ( say mayb 15-20k and onwards).

i dunno if it can b considered normal, but opinions from others is to get the valve clearance corrected before long term damage settles in. as for wat is long , i haf no idea

hope this helps a little

Great news for those who wants to get an XJR engine Guard.

Look 99% as picture shown. Only down part is the welding at the bolt area.

The engine guard is secured by 2 nuts, not 3.

Price S$70 which includes installation, available at Hodaka Motoworld.

I think they must have fabricated the guard from the pic. Cheers! :bounce:

as for the spare parts, u mind specifying wat u need. although at the end of the day H**g Le*ng seems to be the most likely solution.

Is it made of stainless steel or coated with stainless steel?

Actually still prefer the 3 bolt one... more XJR-like leh:cheeky:

Very hard to find, the earliest one I can find are FV plates, probably 2002 and above. If you want to find a 2nd hand XJR... good luck on your search.

I'm a newbie here,

does anyone know how to distinguish the year model of an xjr400?

here in the philippines, there are a lot of 2nd hand being sold and it's not accurate if you'll look in the registration papers.

any leads will help.

TIA.
