Hey guys. I just came back from a 'what i think is correct way to check the a/f' .

I just did a 0-about 140km/h whack to check my spark plug colour. I got it up there around 9-10,000 rpm (wasn't looking), then closed throttle/kill engine switch and let the bike glide to a stop. Took out the plug, using the NGK BR9EIX. The plug was still quite clean, but had a hint of black. I just went for rejetting yesterday and well I'm supposed to check.

Thing is, i'm unsure whether i should have kept the rev up and maybe hit 11,000 in 6th gear and held it there, or not. I read many different methods about testing your plug with the mid range throttle etc but this one seems best (at least from my perception).

I couldn't really go much further and had to stop cuz i was running out of road.. If not i don't think i'd be here typing this.

Anyone got any say in this?

1: Was the 'whack' long enough'?

2: Did i get it high enough/ Was this the correct technique to check the a/f ?

3: Black is rich, brown is just nice, white? i Hear it's when it's lean. What about grey?

Any help would be appreciated guys. :)

Cheers!~

When checking your plug during jetting, it is not the rev that matters but your throttle position. Mark your throttle and hold it at the "1/4", "1/2", "3/4", and "WOT(Wide Open Throttle)" position before hitting the kill switch and pulling over. Hold the throttle in that position for at least 30 seconds.

Also, the correct technique is called a 'plug chop'. Bring along a mini hacksaw and saw away about 3mm of the side of the plug. The most accurate area to look at is not the tip of your plug nor the ceramic resistor. But the bottom of the valley in the deepest section of your plug. To view it, saw away the side of the plug until it is visible.

Different A/F ratio at different throttle positions tell u where u are rich, and where u are lean.

radawi is half correct on the throttle position and which jets come into play: ie. idle, pilot, needle, mains.

It took me almost half a year to finish this. I did plug chops on varying weather conditions. Rainy day; rainy night; hot day; dry night.

My plug is usually white. But I'm running a premix 1:70 2T to fuel ratio, and running on lean jets hasn't given me any problems.

The only real problem is mass stupidity and laziness, which is a rampant disease among the young Aprilia riders.

Need Fully Synthetic oils.

If parts spoil... like signal lights cost 70 bucks?? and need to wait......

Fuel comsumption for RS 250 around 13km/litre?

Well i am looking at RS 250 cos.... in a way its that latest sport bike in 2A ... Lolx.. the rest all nearly 10 yrs old... and look squarish.. hehe..

BTW lacrimosae, your sig the DH bike, is Monster T fork ? Frame?

I'm no guru. I just bother to read up instead of listening to mechanics trying to bullshit me all the time.

The gurus were pple like Eyz, Fibre, and currently u still have Edwin.

The fork on my DH bike is a Marzocchi Junior T. Frame is a GT LTS-DH Eric Carter's 1997 World Cup Edition with an original Rock Shox nitrogen piggyback rear shock.

Anyway, I just gave away a new Aprilia shirt to Edward who came for my last DIY on 13 July. I got another one for whoever is interested.

Chrisking, you ride DH too? or mtb?

I am more towards mtb, no $$ to buy DH during schooling days. Using Cannondale beast of the east. Atom Race Fork. Rear Rim: Atomic Industry (not the sticker logo 1) for learning bunny hop, and Magura SKY.

Where U guys live mebbi can meet for supper or sumthing?

I am currently selling an old bike, a Dean Scout Titanium frame with Rock Shox's first generation SIDs and 4-spoke Spinergy rims. Full XTR, and all parts titanium where available. Bought it all for S$6k, letting go for S$2.5k as its a decade old. If you know anyone interested, let me know.

I live in Joo Seng. I dont have time for suppers but you're welcome to join in for my DIY sessions.

guys, my RS125 has some problems, i was riding without a valve for bout one and a half months and recently just fixed a second hand valve about last week, for the first few days, my bike has the power like expected with a valve, but now the feeling is different, sometimes my first gear has trouble hitting 7 rpm and there isn't the power i'd get with a valve, does anyone know or have any advice on what the problem is? Pls help me! I won't be able to come online for a while, so if there's anyone who can help and willing to do so can you drop me a call or sms at 98505016.

I'll be very thankful if anyone can help as i'm at a loss of what i should do.

I brought you my bullets; you brought me your love.

Now this is really going to take some time, and alot of 'stabbing in the dark' due to myself being new to this.

Now to get myself a hacksaw. Really appreciate the input bro, thanks for sharing. This I never found online, or at least all of it compiled into one that makes sense.

But thinking about it, Holding full throttle for 30 seconds should be something done only in Malaysia or someplace REALLY secluded, after all, i think even in 6th gear from 2000rpm, if i held full throttle, i bet i'd be in like 13k rpm or really pushing the engine that hard.

I guess that's why this sort of tuning is usually done at track or a substitute of it.

Class 3 = 02/07/2002

Class 2B = 24/04/2008

Class 2A = 22/12/2009

Class 2 = 10/02/2011

A very likely possibility is that you're running too rich an A/F mixture.

I have a few suggestions that would preferably be better to tell you verbally, in person, and hopefully out of earshot of any authorities.

Tuning on track is ideal as it allows you to test the bike and yourself to the fully ability as well. However, not all of us can afford that many track sessions, nor have the luxury of time to travel there.

It's good that you're interested in tuning your own bike. It's a great start. If plug chops are too much trouble for you, leave the sawing of the plugs out. Try to get a powerful LED torch and peer into the deep section of the plug for a colour reading. This may not be the most accurate alternative, but its still better than the nonsense looking-at-the-plug-tip method.

I assure you, nothing else will give you a greater sense of pride than tuning your own bike to perfection. When the day comes that you never have to clean your valve, nor change your spark plugs, nor b|tch about poor fuel consumption, nor whine over lack of throttle response and power, you'll feel it too.

That's real passion, I believe. :D
