EO.. Brand or API standard

For engine oil, do you look our for the Brand of the EO or the API(american patrolium industrial) standard?? I went to many shop in SG and JB. I notice that there are some popular brands have standard API SG/SL. The latest i have seen is API SL. Yet there are some unknows brands especially in JB with API SL. So which is which.. Brands or API standard.

Giant got sell motorcycle oil? A few weeks ago I went to both Giant in IMM and Tampines and I couldn't find any specific motorcycle engine oil.
