I think the probability is low but worth a shot. I'll be flying over to L.A. next week on a business trip, ALONE. So if there's anyone who's going as well or is already in L.A. who have the time to show me around, please do PM me!

Otherwise, maybe you can intro me a friend who's in L.A. I can hook up with? Its my first time flying overseas alone you can imagine how scared I'm feeling!

1st thing 1st. Stopover at Narita Airport Japan? How many hours?

How many days trip?

Planning to drive there?

Stay where? Because USA or basically LA is not a small place. People to meet you might not wish to meet you because you are easily 8 hours drive to and fro for them.

Always ride safely and defensively.

Repair bike cheap and fast,

Repair body expensive and slow.

Here is my ideal packing list. Be it you are travelling coach or business class.

Have these followings handy:

a) a small pouch that can be stuffed into the pocket of your flight seat:

1) 1 foldable comb

2) 1 black pen

3) small toothpaste and tooth brush

4) 1 lip balm

5) 1 travel size vicks

6) 1 travel size medicated muscle rub

7) 1 string of panadol

8) 1 vitamin c fizzy tablets (I have the 'Airborne formula')

9) 1 small box of Paxidorm Tablets (Its a muscle relaxant cum sleeping pills, can get at pharmacies.)

10) 1 small travel size johnson face wash (Its to function as soap too.)

11) 1 small travel size johnson face moisturiser

12) 1 small nail brush.

13) Wet tissues

14) Dry tissues

15) Ricola sweets to suck on

*16) a water bottle with filter to stuff into the front pocket too. So its easier to have it refilled instead of asking the stewardess for water.

b) Carry on bag (Take note. A backpack at least.)

1) 1 rolled up beach blanket which is easier to access when packed at the top of the backpack.

2) 1 set of clothes including underwear, in ziplock bag preferred.

3) 1 book with a reading light

4) 1 actual cushion neck pillow (Avoid the blow up ones cos its not safe.)

c) Laptop bag

1) Travel socket (If you have.)

1) Laptop Charger

2) Handphone charger

3) Camera charger

4) MP3 Charger

5) Your documents & Disks and thumb drives.

d) Your carry on luggage

I leave it up to you what else you need.

e) Your luggage

1) If for extended stay. And you are expecting to meet lots of people. Then plan your wardrobe to have at least four sets of clothing. The idea is: One for day, One for night, One for next day and the last for emergencies. Bring along at least a tailored jacket, a tie, belt and black shoes. Keep all your socks black too.

2) Bring along some bermudas & jeans too for when you are out on leisure. At least a pair of walking sports shoes for when you want to explore. (Though its cheaper to buy there but we dont know how free are you to drive out to factory outlets to shop.)

Can skip the nail brush, but be careful of dirty nails even when you have no intention of accumulating dirt under your nails.

When you stop over at Narita Japan, they have some services that you can utilise. Like using their shower rooms and taking a shower to freshen up.

Please also do shop for a anti static wrist band at Narita Airport. It works wonders.

Here's what you should get at various airport shops.

From Singapore

1) Guaram ciggies? (I am not sure of the spelling.)

2) Travel neck cushion.

At Japan.

1) Anti Static wrist band

2) Their wide array of electronic goods and accessories

From USA.

1) Magazines.

Japan hotel laundry does wonders to white shirts. So if you have white shirts....Bring them along and send for their laundry. They will come back whiter then white.

In USA. They usually have a laundry room, so can buy laundry powder there at the laundry room dispensing machine or you really need to go out to a supermarket to get some. Please remember to wash your black clothes and white clothes separately. And do try to ask people how to remove the lint from the dryer before you use them.

Actually, now is the good time to start compiling the stuffs.

Get the missus, mistresses or g/fs to help you lah.

My little pouch is currently a NorthWest Airlines World Business Club pouch and stuffed with stuffs already.

And oh. Do take a panadol 1 hour before you board the plane. It helps to thin your blood so you can avoid the Thombosis thingy.

Take the 'Airborne' or vitamin C fizzy tablets in orange juice as often as you can. Before you enter the sg custom and before you board your plane and during the meal times in the plane.

If possible, fly in think jeans or long bermudas and collar t-shirt and wear socks with your crocs. You need to take off your shoes and put thru the x-ray machines at various customs. So something not as smelly feet will be nice to everyone around you. Even in the plane.

(I forgot to mention that you should really bring along a pair of slippers to wear into the bathrooms and swimming pools.)

I returned from USA in a pair of new Nike Running shoes and it stinks to high heaven when I took them off in Singapore. So crocs or slippers are the best.

For those who are is travelling due to work.

Please request for an advance of some cash from the office.

And for those expected to travel often. Do your travel insurance and your International Driving Permit one day before you fly. Instead of like insurance for a few days. Get the one that last you a year.

Also do try to get a dental before you go.

If you are station there permenantly. Then do up a CNCC before you go.

Argh yes yes! Make sure your water bottle is empty until you have boarded the plane.

You most likely wont need the filter for the water at Singapore and Japan. But I recommend using the filter while in USA, especially when you are walking around sightseeing. Buying drinks in USA is very VERY expensive.

Also, if you like to sleep undisturbed. Inform the stewardess to keep your food for you till when you wake up and request for the food.

BTW, I was at Daiso Vivo City just now and saw that they have anti-static/ reduce static wrist bands selling there. Try getting one for the flight and during your stay in USA or UK.

The dry air in the air and their summer is horrible.

Bring along some anti histamine too. For allergies. Your medical wont be cheap.

So do try to stay healthy with plenty of vitamin c daily before and during your trip.

And remember to always check online the airlines luggage allowance.

If you have those army kit bags (They call it parachute bags?) Fold at least two into your luggage cos they are great as extra luggage to lug home extra stuffs and they somehow fit the height and weight requirements on some airlines.

Lecture still on-going lah....

You boys are easier when going overseas. Females got lot more stuff to pack.

1) Pack a small bottle of 'Clear' Shampoo into your luggage. The weather difference will definitely help your scalp to shed a lot more. The 'Clear' shampoo is not truly a heavy duty dandruff shampoo so it should help to clear up your problem till you adjust to their weather.

2) Sleep. Sleep as much as you can on the flight (Thats what the sleeping pill cum muscle relaxant is for.) It helps your body to recuperate faster to the time difference.

Take time to go under the sun. Preferably some time lounging at the pool to adjust your body clock.

Its easier flying to the West then you flying towards the East aka Asia. So dont plan anything important within 3 days of returning from the West.

Do also take note that Sg has a faster clock. We are relatively one day ahead of USA/UK? So as above. Dont rush to go to work or something.

3) Avoid doing tattoos just before or during your trip. Dropping Sick from those are no fun overseas.

4) Change your currency in Singapore. US LAX airport somehow cannot find decent money changer. And if you have to withdraw money in USA, find a credit union ATM. They dont charge extra admin charges.

When you shop at their convenience stores or Pharmacies. Look out for

1) Credit cards in values of $50-$100. You need to pay admin charges and fill up the cards with $$$ at the cashier counter. They are extremely useful to buy some things online or just swipe the card at the airport to get a trolley to push your luggage. Works something like a sg cash card.

2) Pay as you Go phones.

3) Start a small checking a/c. Easier to cash cheques if they give you in their country's currencies. Eg. I received a USD13/- cheque in USA. To cash it, it cost me USD10/- in admin charges at the bank without a bank a/c in USA.

Dont just spend all your money in the western country.

When you get back to Singapore, go for a good body steaming session with massages. That will help you adjust back to Sg time and weather.
