SOON after he arrived in Singapore in 2007, Benoit Valin got a bicycle to ride to his office at Buona Vista.

 

Just as quickly too, on a rainy October day, he was rendered a bloody mess along Portsdown Road by a motorist who turned without looking.

 

Then the motorist in the car behind honked at him to get out of the way.

 

“She well saw that I had blood on my head and other parts of my body, but she waved her fist to threaten me,” says the 31-year-old Canadian.

 

That wasn’t the only incident for the dedicated “bike commuter”.

 

“Commuting is the only time I can ride my bike. Unfortunately, it is also the most dangerous time of the day (to do so).”

 

Other close calls include one in January when a driver shot across three lanes of Commonwealth Avenue and Benoit had to swerve to avoid him. In doing so, he had to “touch” the car to avoid being hit by a bus. That enraged the motorist who “chased down” the road for about a kilometre.

 

“Then he came out of the car, fists in the air,” recalls the Ottawa native.

 

In February, along Bukit Timah Road, a driver shot across two lanes and narrowly avoided clipping him.

 

“At the light, I knocked on his window to talk. He did the ‘I’ve done nothing wrong, you’re on the road and you have no place here’ speech,” says Benoit. “That about sums it up. This happens about every week, but I don’t make a fuss about them ... only when they really have to be educated.”

 

May 20 is when he hopes this will happen. That is when Ride of Silence Singapore - he is the organiser - will kick off at 7pm from Merlion Park at Clifford Pier.

 

Attending riders will dress in white and ride - in silence - to honour those killed or injured while cycling on public roads. Last year, there were about 22 such deaths here, and this year, the figure already stands at six, says Benoit. It is expected to increase with the escalating popularity of cycling.

 

The riders here will join others worldwide in a silent slow ride on May 20 to raise the awareness of motorists and other road users as well as that of the authorities.

 

The first ride originated in the United States city of Dallas, after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was killed when hit by the mirror of a passing bus.

 

Officials from the Safe Cycling Task Force will also join in. The route (yet to be approved) will cover 19km or so.

 

Cycling for Benoit has been a 14-year “love story”. At 17 and at college, he needed money, so he started cycling extensively as a messenger in Ottawa. At university in Boston, he volunteered for Bikes Not Bombs, a not-for-profit organisation that recycles old bikes for third-world countries.

 

Graduate school between 2001 and 2006 meant never staying long enough in a place to sustain a devotion to a cause. Until Singapore, where he saw “how road, and cycling safety could improve the quality of life for everyone”.

 

That encounter in February made the bachelor decide to dedicate his spare time to cycling safety. He then had a cause, but no means to reach out.

 

“Changing the world by yourself, when all you see is the same five people every day is very difficult,” says the bioinformatics scientist for a pharmaceutical company.

 

In April, he received an email from Canada’s National Capital Commission, advertising the Ride of Silence.

 

“It was an epiphany. I found the means to unite people in support for a cause that affects everyone,” he says.

 

There have been 100 responses from his Facebook group so far. Minister of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Vivian Balakrishnan is scheduled to be present, as is Senior Parliamentary Secretary for MCYS and Ministry of Transport, Mr Teo Ser Luck.

 

Benoit clocks about 1,000km a month riding from his Bukit Batok home to Buona Vista. When the 200km of park connectors are completed by 2015, “Singapore will become a world-class haven for cyclists”.

 

“Unfortunately, park connectors don’t go everywhere. They cover only 60 per cent of my commute. The challenge is coping with traffic and the dangers of traffic.”

 

That means drivers of every ilk, as well as pedestrians, especially “those who zig-zag between cars at lights and pop up without warning”. Cyclists who ride at night without lights and reflectors, wearing dark clothes, and those who ride against traffic and through lights are at fault, too.

 

Benoit is keen that helmets be worn, and made mandatory for riders under 12.

 

“Deaths can never be reduced to zero. Drivers need to learn how to communicate their intentions clearly to cyclists (and vice versa). The rules of the road need to be clearer so they can be respected. Only then can roads be safer.”

 

Cycling safety should be incorporated into driving classes and tested during the theory test. Physical education teachers too, should teach cycling safety, he says.

 

“On a bicycle, safety means staying alive.”

This is a very good idea - if only all bikers can have a commemoration day as well - all wear black/ tie black cloth on bike, black ribbon for non-bikers who lost biker frens.

However am i the only one who thinks this is all for nothing when the law does not protect motorcylists? I am referring to the infamous sin min editor who had her sentence reduced to 1 day's jail for killing a pillion rider and permanently maiming the rider. what kind of a message does that send out? that our lives are not worth protecting? if i did not read incorrectly it also does not mention if her 10 year ban from driving was upheld. so does this mean she's free to drive again? and is SPH still employing her, a dangerous and reckless driver?

Dear brothers of SBF who is seeing this..... Remember the Uncle who got bang by the Sin Min Editor? And his Indo maid pillion who have a family and child in Indo waiting for her to return which never will happen?

 

The Uncle send me a Mail again. I really think he cant get over it and still feel very bad abt his maid's death. I hereby would like to share the content as i think he would like to share it in here SBF. Please brothers... i think its really time we do something. I saw many articles in the internet concerning my case and many comment were expressed though some very harsh. As I has mentioned that I am Mr. Nobody and that makes me different. The 1 day jail is un-beliveable, un-acceptable, ridculous, insulting to the family of my dead pillion-rider. Why? is it a foreigner's life is worth nothing? peanuts? It is beyond my understanding. I was surprised when I heard the news that Ms Lim was given 1 day jail and a fine of $2000/-

 

Why surprise? During the trial in the Sub/court I understood that she could have been jailed up to five years for causing death of the maid and two years for injuring me. In the end the District Judge Hamidah sentenced her to 18 months. Her lawyer Subhas Anandan appealed and the case went to High Court.

 

Let me tell you my story I hold 4 Licences (1)Class 2, motor-cycle (2) Powered Boat (3) Scuba-diving and (4) Pilot’s PPL.

 

I was an air-cadet (school-days) with the Malayan Air Training Corps/Singapore Wing in 1954-55. The passion led me to learn to fly with the Republic of Singapore Flying Club in 1988-1992. I switched over to Malaysia, for obvious reason my expenses are in ringgit and I could fly the length and width of the Peninsular. In order to maintain my licences current, I had to undergo many medical examinations. For PPL more stringent tests are done; in the beginning it was for annually and later stages at 6 months interval due to age factor. I had to go only to doctors approved by the Department of Civil Aviation. Ever since then I had kept my licence in force and my PPL expires in 2005 before the accident. That is to say that I had been flying for 17 years continuously and deemed to be physically fit.

 

On Christmas Eve,2006 Ms Lim car slammed into us at the junction in front of the Raffles Town Club. The impact was so great that we were thrown off from our bike. Imagine my pillion an Indonesia maid (her name Mel) was said to have landed on the roof of her car, slide down the front windscreen on to the bonnet and fell to the road.I landed further away in pain and agony and realised that my leg broken when I could not stand up because it was dangling from knee below. By the grace of God a passing doctor came to our aid and temporary made a splint to secure my injured leg. Two ambulances took us to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The surgeon later told me that I had a heart attack during the surgery and they they nearly lost me; they had to stop and patch me up quickly. Four days later while in the ward I suffered another heart attack. This time my wife Josephine in panic got a priest to do anointing a Catholic ritual to prepare for one’s passing away.

 

Mindful the accident was on Christmas Eve and everyone was rushing home. My wife (telephone operator) was in desperation under much pressure and stress; rushed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. She tried to contact Jack Focus, the Maid Agency but the staff was un-cooperative and least helpful. However, some true friends, Indonesian people responded to her plight. They helped her to connect with some Welfare Organisation and also to the Indonesian Embassy/Fachry Sulaiman, the 1st Secretary(Protocol and Consular); thank God for he was available. Josephine had the unpleasant task of attending the Mortuary and bear the cost for repatriation of Mel’s human remains by air to her hometown Semarang/Indonesia.

 

I believe that the accident had triggered my heart. I did not have any problem before the accident. As shown in maintaining my PPL current I had a clean bill of health. How do you account my maid,young and strong;three times my junior. had her heart stopped twice, once in the ambulance and another time in the ward. What can you expect for a 68 years old man? I underwent 4 operations for my broken left leg at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and a heart by-pass surgery at National University Hospital. I was in and out of hospital and had to endure prolong pain and suffering; still do though now much lesser. As if all this was not enough, at hospital I contacted infection by the ‘Super Bug” termed MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus)and re-admitted to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. There I was treated by drips in a 6-week antibiotic course and placed under CDC. Half way through I was transferred to St. Luke’s Hospital for a second time to continue completion of the treatment. Earlier part was a nightmare for the family as there was no maid and my stressful wife was running about dragging my 92 years old demented mother. My elder brother, my son and our neighbourhood did help to fill it, and many good people prayed fervently for my survival. I am very grateful for their kindness, concerned, their spiritual support and also to the surgeons, the doctors, nurses, all those involved whose skill and professionalism had kept me alive.

 

Back to the question of surprise. I recalled my early times I had to go to court as a shipping agent (Assistant Manager) to stand-by for my crew hauled-in for shop-lifting. I usually paid the fines and they are jailed for one day. That is to say they are kept in the lock-up within the court premises and released at the end of the day (5pm)and released.

 

I supposed the offence considered minor and they are let off lightly; I then took them back to their respective ships and that was it.

 

In our case, sad to say our poor Indonesian maid worked for us for only a week and was looking forward to a better life. At a tender age of 23 years old and at the prime of her life: ended abruptly.

 

She left behind a husband broken-hearted had been thrown out of the house. His in-laws, partly blaming him for allowing his wife (their daughter) to work in Singapore. What’s about her one year plus daughter whose mother will not be returning alive. Sorry she did returned but unfortunately in a wooden box. We are sympathetic but what else can we do now, except for moral and spiritual support, to pray for her well being, her dead mother and the family.

 

I am a citizen of Singapore though not that highly educated and find myself in this confusion. I know I am Mr. Nobody and I suppose that makes a difference. You know from an active person I have now been reduce to this miserable state. I supposed I cannot use the word “cripple” as I am not a doctor and it maybe an over-statement. So I say physical deficiency, I suppose it covers, it sounds better to some who wants to hear it. However, it is beyond doubt that my leg is permanently deformed (broken at 5 places) and I am not a fraction of what I used to be. I walk with a leg-brace (a kind of support so I don’t need clutches) but cannot walk long distance or even stand too long as it will hurt. We have a long wait by the Insurance company over 2 years, even after subjecting to their demand for a medical re-examination by their doctors.

 

Meantime we foot the bills for my hospitalisation, surgery, pharmacy, periodical re-view and so on and on. We also had to pay Mel's expenses. Finally I find it hard to understand and my conscience is in search of an answer. The question troubling me over and over again, “Is this justice”

 

My son quoted to me a passage taken from the “Gospel”reading from "1 Peter 2:19" and I resigned to it.

we came up with a few key points - whatever we wanna do, we need some official body to represent us. Who can?

 

there's some official groups, i believe active in sbf, but who are they? HOG? STOC? Team 1? Team 27?

 

Not that we wanna (or for the matter, not that we can) overthrow the decree or what, but is there more that we can do, as bikers, to raise MORE awareness?

 

I noe BBDC has a yearly safety campaign. but seriously, if i din go back for my 2A, i wouldn't even it noe it is happening...

 

Can it get bigger? with the power of new media, im sure it would be possible. But seriously, who is free to organise such events?

 

ultimately, we have the ideas, but no experience in such things...

 

lastly, we agreed that we shouldn't make it as though we bikers are trying to "attract attention" nor trying to put other road users down. Whatever we may wanna do, or eventually do, we gotta approach it from a "All road users" perspective.

Also, added to the fact that most of them themselves think car insurance and the ability to make damage claims are sorry excuses to be bolder on the road?

However am i the only one who thinks this is all for nothing when the law does not protect motorcylists? I am referring to the infamous sin min editor who had her sentence reduced to 1 day's jail for killing a pillion rider and permanently maiming the rider. what kind of a message does that send out? that our lives are not worth protecting? if i did not read incorrectly it also does not mention if her 10 year ban from driving was upheld. so does this mean she's free to drive again? and is SPH still employing her, a dangerous and reckless driver?

 

I would like to write in to the media with some support from bikers here, for those who have lost friends and relatives to drivers like this and also to highlight the injustice in this case.i am sick and tired of being at the mercy of these road killers. kindly attached your names below. thank you.

A flawed system that has made a "last minute" mistake, plus an extremely lenient penalty -- is the system making drivers more complacent road commuters? Also, added to the fact that most of them themselves think car insurance and the ability to make damage claims are sorry excuses to be bolder on the road?

I've read the posts on motorcycling safety and thank the efforts of all bikers who try to make our safety a priority.

 

However am i the only one who thinks this is all for nothing when the law does not protect motorcylists? I am referring to the infamous sin min editor who had her sentence reduced to 1 day's jail for killing a pillion rider and permanently maiming the rider. what kind of a message does that send out? that our lives are not worth protecting? if i did not read incorrectly it also does not mention if her 10 year ban from driving was upheld. so does this mean she's free to drive again? and is SPH still employing her, a dangerous and reckless driver?

 

I would like to write in to the media with some support from bikers here, for those who have lost friends and relatives to drivers like this and also to highlight the injustice in this case.i am sick and tired of being at the mercy of these road killers. kindly attached your names below. thank you.

A flawed system that has made a "last minute" mistake, plus an extremely lenient penalty -- is the system making drivers more complacent road commuters? Also, added to the fact that most of them themselves think car insurance and the ability to make damage claims are sorry excuses to be bolder on the road?

I've read the posts on motorcycling safety and thank the efforts of all bikers who try to make our safety a priority.

 

However am i the only one who thinks this is all for nothing when the law does not protect motorcylists? I am referring to the infamous sin min editor who had her sentence reduced to 1 day's jail for killing a pillion rider and permanently maiming the rider. what kind of a message does that send out? that our lives are not worth protecting? if i did not read incorrectly it also does not mention if her 10 year ban from driving was upheld. so does this mean she's free to drive again? and is SPH still employing her, a dangerous and reckless driver?
