I found that the problem was due to the connection of the wire to the item circled in red shown in the picture below. After fiddling with the wire i managed to prevent the electricity from cutting off with every turn of the handlebar. Is the black item part of the HISS system?

I have the same problem also, intermittent connection from the ignition switch. What I do is simply secure the wire around the lock using cable tie so as to prevent it from moving.

What is your VFR model?

If Vtec. it could be:

Check the male/female connectors on the LHS fairing/radiator.

Most of the pins should have been burnt out by now.

Make some wires bypass or replace the sub wire harness.

This set of wire and connectors control the ignition and HISS.

I am riding a 02 model :)

Ok good to know someone else have the same problem as me :cheeky: I will secure it in that way too

I had that same problem some times back in JB

manage to found the area of fault after a long search (close to the circle area)

so I cut open the rubber harness of that area and saw that

one wire had its rubber insulator stretch but the copper wire had already snap thats why turn left engine off, turn right is ok :faint:

another had 3/4 of the copper wire snap :slapforehead:

Lucky I always carry spare wires and the 2 wires was re-connect

PS : I also riding a 02 vtec model

My present VFR is now 10 yrs old. Registration is in May 99.

I replaced my electrifier (rectifier...) in May 2004. And my battery every 2 years.

Is it the time to change the rectrifier again? means every 5 years....

'allo 'allo bang. watis electrifier eh? anti-theft tazer ka? haha

But seriously, if u are doing the battery replacement on a time basis rather than a need-to basis , I think yr rectifier should be fine. I do this replacement regime myself and the rectifier don't need replacement since the last fry 4 yrs ago.

But then if the $$$ in yr pocket is getting itchy ... hahaha.

BTW I've renew the COE on mine till Apr 2019 for $897.

Good to see u on line again mate!!!

This question has been in my mind for the past few weeks too.

My ride is 6th Gen coming to 3yo, 30k mileage.

Still running on stock battery and rectifier.

Been monitoring the voltage and they seem to be running fine (touch wood).

But there was once when I wasnt able to start the bike after pushing "start" button for afew times.

Only managed to start it again after I rested the bike for afew min and tried again, again cranking afew times before getting it to roar.

Assuming that the batt was not charged properly due to my daily city riding, I brought my bike to the expressway for a spin. After that, no more problems.

Once inawhile still, must crank twice before bike will start.

Remember a thread stating all the faulty parts encountered at a certain age and mileage, and IIRC, fellow viffers are changing their rectifier and battery at ard my mileage and batt age.

Wondering if its time for me to replace the battery/rectifier?

Just could not find the damn thread........... :giddy:

Strongly advised to change yr battery now before yr rectifier fries. Battery have a definite life span. > 2.5 yr old is already a bonus. As the battery ages, it is unable to carry or store a load that the generator outputs thru the rectifier. When this happens the rectifier overloads and fries. That's why they always seem to go off in pair.

changing yr battery to a fixed schedule (fre 2 y - 2.25 yr) will preserve yr rectifier.

bro Ravon ,

myself riding a Gen6 ,

has encountered a batt. flat situation recently.

first of all i checked the fuses in the fuse box located at the inner compartment of the front fairing and the main fuse under the seat.

..all seems fine.

one sign that shows its time for a batt. changed :

- at times when the bike overheats it dies off ,

& when restart , the digital odometer & digital clock also being reset

- eventually the bike wont start at all once the batt. is totally flat

although the indicators on the dashboard are still bright.

a batt. replacement model YTZ12S cost me S$150.

DIY ---> priceless.

OIC, so my habit of changing battery every 2 years is a good one. I don't like to hav such problems when I'm touring in Msia.

I noticed quite a few viffers here paid this kind of money for yr battery. I always get mine at LAB for only $75 (for the last 3 changes) and they lasted me more than 2 yrs ea with no problems. Like Kiss, I change them after 2 yrs even tho its still working. hmmmm.

$68 and $150?

Thats alot of difference there! Can buy 2 with change even!

Anyone has any input on the price difference?

Are they even the same battery to start with?

actually i thought of getting one from LAB.

unfortunately , i encounter my bike breakdown in the morning @ MacPherson.

got to called AhChong to get for me 1st as i have to rush to work.

later in the evening got the batt changed @ MacPherson Caltex where i 'abandon' my love there.

manufacture co. ?

anyway , is it due to different manufacture co. that result in the difference in price ?

bro sino,

Is "YTZ12S" the original vfr battery?

yess.

i guess the 5th Gen also using the YTZ12S as original.

correct me if im wrong , 5th Genner.

Ya. Same same model.

Yuasa batteries are manufactured in many countries. Mine (a 5th genner) came with made in USA Yuasa when new. Others are made in Japan. Those from LAB at ard $70 comes from China or Taiwan. My previous change was a Furukawa (Japan made), also $75. Stuff from China & Taiwan are associated with inferior quality, sometimes with good reasons; but in this instance the difference in price is too wide to justify especially when I do not detect any performance diff.

cheers.

Talking about regime of changing battery every 2-2.5yrs to preserve the rectifier.

How about lifespan of the rectifier?

Assuming that we change battery every 2-2.5yrs, how long do we need to change the rectifier before it dies?

Any input?

YTZ14S Capacity is abit higher at 11.2...C.C.A is also higher at 230...than YTZ12S.

There are AGM and MF types for YTZ12S and YTZ14S..prices also diff here.

Both YTZ14S and YTZ12S are safe to use for VFR.The most important is to charge up the batt on a batt charger before install on bike to use.Just like brand new HP...

Preemptive changing of the battery prevents damage to the rectifier due to a damaged battery. Hence this prevents repetitive damage if battery is changed regularly.

Other causes of damage is due to heat buildup in the rectifier when engine is running and standing still. One way is to rig a $5 fan to keep it cool. Once on the move the air stream would bring down the temperature.

Also a voltmeter is a good accessory to install to monitor the output to see if all's well.

Once the above are cared for, old age will take over. My 5th genner is now 9.5 yrs old and has one change of rectifier with battery due to not changing the battery earlier. Since implementing the regime, (touch wood) - no prob.

Hope that helps.
