Maintenance intervals for classic vespa

Daily

-Headlamp, taillight, brakelights, signal lights working

-Brakes working

Weekly

-Tire Pressure (165 front, 210 rear)

-Tightness of the bolts and nuts (2 stroke bikes tend to vibrate everything to pieces)

Monthly/800km (which ever comes first)

-Throttle cable adjustment

-clutch and brake cable adjustment

-idle and fuel mixture adjustment

Every 3 months/4000km (which ever comes first)

- sparkplug inspection (erosion, healthy chocolate brown colour)

- de-coke piston and cylinder head (removing built-up carbon from the engine)

- top up gearbox oil (SAE 30 motor oil or SAE 80 transmission oil)

- clean air-filter in gasoline

- lubricate parts like (gear selector box, cables, speedo gear, levers)

Every 6 months/8000km (which ever comes first)

- Change the gearbox oil

Two-stroke oil(2T oil) and grade of petrol to use

There's probably some debate going on right now, in Singapore or some other parts of the world on whether more expensive petrol and 2T oil will properly maintain your classic vespa or not. My theory is, there really are no such thing as pin size gnomes in any petrol cleaning your piston or cylinders. Don't believe the caltex advertisement. Proper care of engine will have to be under taken by you, the rider yourself. Sounds tough? Get a low maintenance 4 stroker.

RON 92, 95 or 98?

Use which ever you can afford and if there no anomaly, carry on. why do I say that? Higher Octane fuel has additives in it, thus a higher price for it. Petrol is petrol, they hold the same amount of energy, it's just that with additives, they can make the petrol burn at a higher temperature. Unless you have a high compression racing engine or you hear 'pinging' sounds(it sounds like ball bearings in your cylinder) from your engine, you don't really need the 'good' stuff. it's not going to make your machine fly like they say in the commercials. So, if it runs good, no odd sound, stick with it.

Semi-synthetic or fully synthetic?

Stick with fully synthetic, if you can shell out the extras for it. Else, it's alright to be using cooking oil if you're stuck in a deserted part of the world. It's all a matter of if you can afford it. I was using the lowest-grade 2T($5?) for a few years before I'm able to spend $17 on a litre R2. My verdict? No difference, except the smell. Still, for the peace of the mind, use fully-synthetic.

If you own a premix machine, use a measuring cup for premixing. You can get it at tong aik, or If you?re a cheap b*stard, use the old cough medicine bottle you got from your GP. The mixture is at 2% for stock machines. Of course, paranoid KS Singaporeans always want to play safe, go for 3%(that?s the max I?ll mix) then. Even when I was using a pinasco kit(able to rev to 9000 rpm), I was mixing at 2%. Nothing happened, no seizure, or anything. Yeah, I?m cynical and cheap, but if you want to mix 5%, go ahead, there?ll be a layer of thicker carbon on the top of your piston, that robs performance.

Running in a new cylinder/piston/piston rings

Installed new piston and rings, time to open up the throttle till your baby starts screaming at 100km/h right? Wrong. Run it in before it seizes. Trust me, I had that experience doing 90km/h on the expressway with new piston. When your rear wheel locks up, fishtails next to an 18 wheeler is not fun at all. So pretty please, for your safety and other motorists? safety, run it in, no matter how tempting it is to open that throttle of yours.

After two tanks of petrol, I?ll usually change the gearbox oil. Why? Cause running in is not an appropriate term. It should be wearing in. Yes, wearing the piston, piston rings and cylinder down to fit. Guess what? Metal bits are shred from the piston, rings and cylinder, especially during the first 200 km. It?s best to change the engine oil after the first 200 km; you wouldn?t want bits of metal crunched up by your gears do you?

After the first 1000km, change your engine oil again. And it?s all gravy.

PX200, PX150 (First 2000km)

First gear 25 km/h

Second gear 38 km/h

Third gear 52 km/h

Fouth gear 70 km/h

I don?t have data for the rest of the models; maybe someone might want to add to this area. Anyway, a little disclaimer, I?m not an expert on vespa. I?ve made some mistakes and did some irreparable damages to my scooter, just passing on some information I?ve learned from experience. So, don?t sue me cause your vespa doesn?t run as well as you thought it?ll be. Of course, I?ve past on some wisdom I got from other scooterist on BBS. Things that I?ve tried out myself of course.

If there is anyone who wants to dispute certain points with me, send me a PM, I?ll change the post accordingly if you can make me see the light. I?m trying to help new fellow classic scooterists, so don?t flame me aitez? Best.

Here's a picture chart to healthy and unhealthy sparkplug condition, compare with your sparkplug and see if your scooter is running healthy.
