You get a big "dunno" from me because I only owned a Phantom for 5000km. Right now waiting if my block would explode from recent DIY tuning.

I have read that the mechanical weaknesses of a Phantom are the 6th gear and the cam chain tensioner (replace every 20,000km or so), in the meantime.

Yes, the bike uncle is quite shocked to hear that only my 2nd gear is KO. He says normally 4 to 6 gears got such probs. He says till like this prob is hopeless case and come back find him if i willing to spend that much money. Then i left the place with a ??? expression.

shake head.. i wont recommend to go there.. there's one bike shop in kranji area.. the uncle very nice person.. wont recommend you unnecessary things.. price wise i think reasonable... can bring you go see see if need be...

Kranji? I know there's one open until late at night but I was advised to stay clear unless emergency or I can 'play' with them.

Theres another bike shop not so far off at Woodlands industrial park. Their service is not bad and rather transparent last time I did major maintenence on my Yamaha there. I had to inspect the price list they drew out for me before they proceeded to have fun on my ride.'

More recently they were kind enough to let me go through their scrapped parts bin and improvise a windshield mount for my Phantom.

Well there's some kilometres to cover but its really just one straight road down from Marsiling.

I also have had a good experience at a shop at CCK. Old shophouse beside the road opposite the giant rectangular Star Trek like apartment (The Linear?).

To summarize my note of advise. Even if my bike breaks down right at the door step of some other bike shop, i'd rather pay to have it towed to planet to have it looked at.

Why try to save a few dollars in petrol or a few ten dollar notes for towing only to get chopped hundreds by another bike shop.

Even if i still have to pay $500 + towing fee I'd be at a peace of mind that a good job gets done.

Build a good relationship with a trustworthy mech by going back regularly and it could nearly pay dividends in the long run.

Would you care to bring it down for one of us to hear the sound. Do describe in more detail.

Knocking can mean mechanical issues, related to valve clearance and as aforesaid, the piston itself. (Bring to Planet in the morning, let Chong test ride and he'll tell you what he thinks)

Sometimes it means predetonation because previous owner trying to boost FC and set the mixture really lean (I can tune that away in 1 min)

...Or you did some DIY airbox modification and OMG how come so powerful now!? But that's unlikely cos you're not me :D

Other sounds include improperly lubricated chain, over rich mixture, too much engine oil (one litre only, or some gaskets will blow eventually!), low quality engine oil, etc.

It's a bit hard to tell you how a healthy Phantom sounds like but it's not very noisy when idling. Just a steady bop-bop-bop.

Thank you all for your replies. And sorry i did not make my question clear.

According to my seniors, It is just perfectly fine machanically. There is no knocking or any other kind of unexpected noise.

It is just bit of loud, like what those racing guys produced to show the power. So what I wonder is , whether their is some simple way to make it more quiet.

Thank you all guys

Quietness - try to reduce the idle settings to give you a quieter idle. Use Motul 3000 or 5100 motor oil (much smoother and quieter than the Castrol I tried at first), go easy on the throttle. That's all I can think of for a quieter bike; this is a quite old-style 'chopper' type motorcycle, and meant to be sort of loud too :)

And that will get rid of the persistent swish-swish-swish sound of a loose chain!

another way to dampen the sound is of course to install a windshield and use thick-padding helmets such as some Shoeis. Full face even better.

But warning - there are a lot of windshields in the market that DONT work because they are non-aerodynamic and create even more turbulence.

Thank you guys, I think i will go for the idle setting and see whether it will make it quieter. And wish it may lower the fuel comsumption too
