It’s a patented sound of Harley Davidson so others can't copy it. Their engine has two pistons. The difference in their engine is that the crankshaft has only one pin, and both pistons are connected to it (the single pin http://www.sa750.com/vtwin/90s.gif ) through their connecting rods. This combined with Harley's (unique Degree of the "V") arrangement of the cylinders means that the pistons can't fire at even intervals. Instead of one piston firing every 360 degrees, a Harley engine does this:

One piston fires, the next piston fires at 315 degrees, then there is a 405 degree gap, the piston fires again, the next piston fires at 315 degrees, there is a 405 degree gap, and so on...

At idliling you can clearly hear the pop-pop sound followed by a pause. Something like : pop-pop---(pause)--pop-pop---(pause)--pop-pop---. That is what makes the Harley, the only bike that can sound like it does and IMHO that’s the main cause why Harley bikes vibrate a lot and leaks easily … as their saying which I have read somewhere, “If it’s ain’t vibrate, it’s ain’t Harley”. :p

Just for information, Harley Davidson did attempted to register their distinct exhaust notes as a trademarks in the 1994 but after six years of litigation from nine strong oppositions, Harley Davidson withdrew their application in United States.

Some pops (not backfire pop) is caused by the carb not filled with petrol and releasing the air, or rather "farting" or "burping". Doesn't happen on EFIs if I not wrong. They is prim and proper. We is belch and pat tummy. hahhaa

when during cruzin time,or rather at low speed maintainin te trottle, this will happens.. seldom cv origin and mikuni will...sns will happenins...due to their design..tats y EFIs will nt hav this problems..
