I had bad experience when I changed my tires for CBR9 many years ago with LAB, they don't do balancing and scratched up my rim real bad, so although they're cheap, I don't use them for tires & servicing/repairs, only buy DIY stuff there

 

ST original tires G547/G548 is very slippery in wet weather so best to avoid(although they last forever & dry weather grip is good)

Over the years tried various BTs(020,021 & 023), Metzeler Z4, still went back to BT as the mileage/$/grip is reasonable.

 

Not many options available for the correct size, so you're left with only few options unless you want to have slightly different profile on front/back.

Ya true true. Where you do up your ST? Was recommended Pirelli Angel $360/pair and Metzeler Z8 $320/pair by another shop. Looking more for mileage as well

Used to send my bike to MT only for major stuff but have not seen him for few yrs as there's not much major issues. Usually do my own oil/coolant change and minor service for wear and tear.

 

My experience with metzeler z4 is the cornering grip is very good, but the mileage sucks and they cup badly after awhile, seems these are build more for sports than touring. Never tried Pirelli before last time as they don't come in stock sizes then, not sure abt now.

 

Tires are very subjective though, might not suit me but it might suit other riders. Try it and see if you liked it.

Read thru and realised that the yellow Fluid is a leak from CDI..

Would it cause any harm to delay replacement for it? or should i get it replaced immediately?

Mine was leaking for about 2-3years before I ordered a used unit off ebay for replacement.

No harm done except you have to clean up the gluey substances every now and then, it's quite difficult to remove it if hardened and it'll coat the internally fairings & lower cowl as well.

just did curb service and re wrap the inner fuel tank due to a power loss.

Take note of the coolant hose. Best to change all at one go if find one has worn like crack. And the coolant thermostat.

for reg 1999 the odometer is based on calculation in miles right? lol my full tank if its only 200 only

200miles convert km arnd 321km. Mileage should be there about.. Yours I believe is a US version... or is it a pan European?

Pan European oh so its based on miles. 321KM for about 23L should be good enough i guess.

Hello ST11 riders! I just got my class 2 not long ago and am interested to get a class 2 bike for leisure/weekend ride. I used to ride Phantom 200, upgraded to Shadow 400. As you can tell, I'm more of a cruiser rider. So I'm looking at Shadow 750 as well as ST11 and ST13 (for some adventure). But budget permits (wife set one) only ST11 for now. Does it make sense for me to get one that is nearing 20 years old? What kind of maintenance am i looking?

 

Would also appreciate if any of the old birds are experienced to share the pros and cons for the bikes listed above.

Well, if it is in very good condition, it is a reliable litre bike for a fraction of a price of a normal litre bike.

 

Some of the pros are:

Can get it cheap, at a 4-digit price.

Carburettor bike, minimal electronics.

Big fuel tank, up to 28 litres.

Conservative riding can hit more than 400km per tank up to 500km.

 

For maintenance, I suppose it will be good if u know the history of that bike like what are the parts that have been changed in the past.

And what to look out for next. A couple of workshops/mechanics know this bike well and parts are not difficult to get for an old bike.

 

The con:

It is heavy.

get a Pan-European.........ideally 2001 to 2003, Y model at least..........the last 1-2 years of the bike...all the known issues ironed out.......higher output alternator...........if serviced well.......can get 18.5/kmx 28l = 518km range, shaft = no need maintain chain, water pump, valve clearance, coolant pipes & belt change within $800 last you 80,000km or close to another decade of use (if remember correctly), crash bars so can drop n just change the plastic covering for about $20 n sometimes maybe ganna the wing signal light cover (This one cost more) but the rest are protected

Just needs getting used to. Can never understand people who do not want a bike due to the weight. Fact is, many people small and big have ridden the bike successfully and safely. So really, the first time i rode a heavy bike, it was st11 and i got used to it in 2 days.

 

but right now, most st11s are being forced to be scrapped due to the NEA ruling, so many better for you to consider other bikes.
