My DIY chain oiler [With alot of pics!!!]

Recommended Posts

Hey, any pictures on how your chains look after using this oiler?

I've only used it for a few days now, but one thing I noticed right away is that with this system, the chain seems to stay cleaner much longer.

Applying the oil directly from a spray can usually after a couple of days, I get splatters on the rear rim, but not with the oiler. It must be because the oiling is done at such a controlled frequency that it oils the chain just the right amount.

I checked my chain today, and it's still oily and shiny, without being too greasy. I think this oiler might work for me much better than manual lubrication :D

Oh, and I don't use it every time I ride. I usually use it for mid to long rides (more than 15min), and only every few days. I check how much oil there's on the chain with my finger and decide to open the valve during my next ride if I feel the chain is too dry.

I did 2 videos of my DIY, see below. Hopefully this will be useful to others.

Many thanks to @tonychan for starting this thread and doing an awesome step by step tutorial that inspired others. :thumb:

And also to @alvinyansg who made me want to to do one by myself, sharing his photos and experience with much details as well.

I made two videos of my DIY chain Oiler, in case anyone is interested :

Setup :

In action: (Oil flow is fast to illustrate where it drips, obviously for real use you need to close the valve a bit)

The flowrate is quite fast, the oil is going to spat to your tires, regulate the oil dropping rate.

great job...great ideas..

i will move the valve away from the chains..i am sure uR valve is getting an oil bath evertime the oiler is running.

or when ridden in the rain..

No it's not, because it's on top of the chain guard and under the fairings so it keeps dry.

haha...the exhaust from our vehicles certainly does pose a hazard to all...

everything that is doischarge into our environment will have some impact..

compared to the oil dripping out of 2t bikes..this is nothing..

...in maintaining the chains ,the amount of sovlents,,soap and what not adds up the damage..

not forgetting the spray waxes..phew oilers are a great substitution to all the stuff needed to clean and lube our chains..

yeah oilers are green ..save and save...with it.

including mother earth..

I suggest to add a regulator valve between your on/off valve and your oil reservoir, so you only regulate the oil flow once, during ride just fully on your valve will do, the regulator valve will regulate the oil flow. The regulator valve can purchase from local fish shop for 50cts only. I did mine this way.

I wrote a detailed post with photos to explain how its done, step by step.

At the bottom I give the shops names and addresses and map to help readers find where to buy the stuff needed to make the oiler.

  • 4 weeks later...

Loving the smoothness and cleanliness of a 4t oiled chain but having to re apply with a jack and a brush every 7 days, 300km or rain, I decided to make my own diy oiler.

However, i was reluctant to source for items and used whatever i had.

A soft 1M aquarium tube and a hardware room.

Initially used a wire hanger, solder iron for the twin head, a connector and some cable ties.

Attempted to use a reservoir without any sealant. Failed miserably.

As you see, no regulation of oil flow. Made a big mess during parking and on my rear chromes.

Picture of the connector

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRst_QPCBGfe68-ZLzCd5snnXI5CqNteEaWIHo3aeyfikAxCr5rsQ

Removed the oiler and did improvisation. Added 2 short electrical wires at the end. Reason is that i want it to start oiling early during my ride thus, initial part of the tube is not restricted at all. I removed the electrical connector and used a cable tie for the head instead. In between the cable tie, i added a small piece of a thick cut up cable tie to add more outward tension to restrict the flow. Hanger was stuffed in between the 2 wires at the end to make the oil flow really tight and to strengthen and positioning of the soft aquarium tube. I do not have a reservoir. Instead, I bring along a Singer bottle filled with 4t oil with me to work in a magnetic bag. The tip fits perfectly to the aquarium tube. Now adjusting the dosage so that when i park, there is little dripping from the leftover. So far very good. (:
