You know what uuei? Just a few months back a few guys have been trying to sell their tdms but no reasonable offer at all . The tdm at dili took a few months before it was sold to an italian guy. Now, three guys are looking for a tdm but no seller. What an irony. Murphy's Law at work. Hang in there uuei...

Hahaha..yah...I wanna sell leh..want a vroom vroom hehehe.

Anyway, just solved a high petrol consumption issue for my TDM that has been plauging me for 2 weeks. When I mean high consumption, I mean ard 20.6km/l which can be good for other bikes. But not for the TDM. I suspected the aifilter & sparkplugs & tyres. I made sure tyres were at optimum pressure but still the same. Next I changed the air filter and sparkplugs (They were 1.5 years old anyway @ 22000km). Voila! Fuel consumption returned to normal. I can get 110km out before the 1st brick on the fuel gauge disappears. Before it was ard 85km.

Just some tips for you guys attempting to do your own servcing. Fuel tank can be flipped up after removing the side fairings. No need to remove the whole tank. Sadly, there's no rod to hold it up like my ex-ducati. Got to improvise using a bungee cord to hold it up. Loop the bungee to the pillion handrails. Use rags to protect your tank from the bungee hook.

Next you should be able to see the airbox. I wonder if mr yammy thinks the airfilter is made of gold or what. 8 screws are used to hold the top cover down! A pain in the butt to unscrew them. Changing the airfilter element is pretty straight forward.

The hard part comes when changing spark plugs. There is almost no way to reach the sparkplugs unless you remove the radiator. Unless some of you has done it some other way, please share it with us. Its not sufficient just loosening the bolts holding the radiator. Still won't give enough space to reach the sparkplugs. I removed 3 hoses from the radiator knowing that I will loose coolant in the process. I removed the 2 near the radiator cap and 1 large hose from the other side (left when seated on the bike). Now with the radiator out of the way, changing sparkplug was pretty straight forward. Reverse the process and top up the radiator coolant when done. I estimate that around 250ml leaked out during the process. So for those who are planning to change sparkplugs out in the field, standby some battery/distilled water and coolant.

Seriously, it was not that difficult to DIY. Alright, here's a technical tip for all you new TDM owners.

cool seems like the air filter change is not so difficult.... Barra, did you get it from Auto M? $?

I will change mine too. Hasnt change since new until now... Already 50K....

Muahhahaaaahaa

yappiez,

its pretty easy lah...plus you like wrenching and elbow grease. No problem for you. Got it from auto for $30 (ard there, coz I got 2 oil filter and 3 crush washers together..all $54). 50k!!! no wonder you are getting 21km/L. I suggest you get the spark plugs changed at the same time since you are removing the side fairings anyway. Check the bottom part of the airbox where it connects to the throttle bodies. Make sure they are fitted properly over the air intake manifolds. They can easily pop out if you pull the airbox upwards despite clamps holding it down. Guys...dun panic..there's nothing wrong...I fiddled with it and the whole airbox popped out. It won't happen if you don't touch it. Since its there, no harm checking. This is also a good time to replace your throttle cables if its getting stiff. Cheap way is to oil it from the top. Once you see oil flowing out at the throttle body side, its ok. This is the only time you can see the cable at the throttle body. Can clean up the oil mess if you squirt too much oil inside the cable.

Those adventurous ones can also disable the solenoid for the variable airbox valve. It starts to open at 4k rpm. Once disabled, its permanently open. More power supposedly according to carpe TDM site. Fuel consumption will increase. Up to you if you want power vs fuel economy.

spend 3 hrs changing the air filter and spark plugs with boon....

the spark plug was really a pain in the ass. Boon's one was very very tight and could only be open after we tried various tools.

in the process he also broke a bolt while tightening it.. (whole head came off..)

Lucky I have welders on hand and we managed to weld another bolt to the remaining end to remove it.... (i'm glad we didnt diy on mscp..)

all is good and I now have full tank to see if my consumption will improve or not.

:thumb: to Edward for the clear description posted.

Eh...boh jio..I can come give a hand mah. Guys...sparkplugs don't have to screw in super tight. Just about 2 rounds using spanner after finger tight is enough. Potential risk of stripping the thread which will be disastrous.

BTW which bolt broke? Radiator bolts? I might have missed this out http://www.carpe-tdm.net/tdmforum/viewtopic.php?t=5423 I did not use a compressor coz I found the seal of the ignition cable to be pretty good (nothing will go in)

BTW good job guys :thumb: I see you can follow instructions very well hahaha. Yappiez...ur air filter is BLACK! cannot even see the green LOL. Is that the workshop manual on the floor? Don't tell me you printed off my instructions??? :giddy:

I figured you guys removed the horizontal bracket on both sides attached to the frame and radiator thus giving you some space to change the sparkplugs. Still I find it very tight to work with.
