actually many counters are quite cheap but market is running on bad sentiment now. when rationale steps in, i expect STI to trade around 3200-3300....

Fed will cut 50bps. maybe more....thats my view

Exciting times for traders. Have cut my defensive positions in first reit and willas array (these stocks no movement at all) and went into growth shares such as HL asia and kingboard at bargain prices. I am still very positive on the outlook for asian economies. healthy inventories and good growth in asia with low interest rates stocks are the way to go. Will switch back to my defensive counters once STI crosses 3500 again

Rstopel,

So now you wont think that I was too drastic when I advised to get out in Nov 07. Hate to say it but i was dead right about the situation.

I see it as a good thing for the market to cool off. It simply cannot keep going up anyway.

For long term investors, just stay invested, dont panic.

Hope we dont lose too much or the momentum and rationale will be lost.

Asia is still doing well. Singapore is still making money. Such a sell off is almost always overdone.

good luck to all and wishing for a big bonus.........

I still think that your views are too drastic. Sure, there are losses in the mortgage market and the FED should have acted earlier to cut rates instead of slashing them now like crazy. Total losses maybe 100bilion so far, nowhere near 2 trilion you mentioned. The thing that surprised me is the sheer market carnage that was caused by hedge funds over the past weeks and all the depressed talks by these so called bankers. So basically all these bank folks want to try to talk us into a resession which I think is disgusting but hey, it's bussiness for them as they flush out the weak holders and sell their put options and pick up the bargains. Got some friends who got cought out with margin trading. My mum in law had to borrow 50k because her 40 lot SGX dropped below $10 while she bought a condo first and did not sell of her shares first and waited for completion (which is this week).

With these lower interst rates, defaults should be much lesser now and investments should pick up wit such low rates. Interbank rates could hit 1% here soon. Next wave of property buying could start here in Q2/Q3.

In the midst of difficulty lies opportunity :)

Total losses way way above $100bil for sure.

Just Citi and UBS is already about $80++bil

yeah a lot of margin traders got owned this week. ....

I dont trade margin for equity but still feel the pain seeing earlier gains go down the drain and into paper losses enough to buy a car in full cash.

Hope you're right abuot Q2 and Q3...

i like the "prepare to buy houses" statement. but nowadays have to start paying before the house is build. don't know can tahan that long period or not leh. i like the old method when u pay a deposit. wait till the house is build finish, get the key and start paying the rest of the installment.

Were you in the market during the last 2 bear markets in the Asian financial crisis and the dot com bust? If you were, anything happening now shouldn't surprise you.

The prices in 2007 were at levels driven up up and up by liquidity, lots of it. There was too much hot money in the market. When liquidity disappears, the hot money first goes, then the losses catch the other speculators with margin, and then some more.

He who hesitates is lost!

yup i was, keppel land 47 cts, OCBC $3.90, keppel corp $1.56 were some of the trades I remember. That was when i started. I lost most the gains in the .com bubble so I hope I learned something. I also got hyped up in thinking that the sky is the limit for tech co's. Well, I have gone back to basics and whatever those so called analyst say, I most likely go in the opposite direction but with the fundamentals in mind. Like contrarian :)

During asian financial crisis the effect it had on the US was that it cooled the economy as inlation stayed low in US. Now we may see the opposit here as due to rapid rise of china/india, commodity prices cause severe inflation. US cooling should (with cheaper dollar) lower down inflation in Asia and prevent it from overheating.

Now you see that property market has slowed and speculation is down. I think this is a good sign. Employment will be robust as still lots of work will be moved to asia. Heard stories that bankers in London get the choice to either move to Asia or get the pink slip.

Singapore domestic economy is driven by tourism/construction + investments in high end mfg for the next couple of years. these are the sectors that has a lot of promise and seeing the PE ratios have been so hammered due to poor sentiment caused by those 'analysts' I think it is a good time to pick up some bargains.

Anyone would like to share on fine wine investment? I am interested in it.

Some houses do offer investment in wines.

Pretty lucrative and worse comes to worse, you can still drink the wines....

Those that I know are a bit exclusive with minimum investment

size of USD100k....

Any else knows which houses can offer wine investments for lower minimums?

Might be beneficial for folks in general on this thread...

Recently about 2 yrs ago, i bought an ILP under this company.

I know all about they providing all the tracking of your investments and all those crabs before you bought the policy from them.

However since after signing the docs, for the 2 yrs i have not been like receiving any updates whether the fund is good or whether its time for me to do a switch (free switching was one of the incentive as indicated by

the FA)

Furthermore, as mine is a per annum basis payment, My FA claims that i only buy in the funds at once a yr basis and that i do not have the dollar cost averaging advantage as compared to those who pays their premium on a monthly basis.

BUT there's one thing very silly is that by logical thinking, they fund managers only buy in your funds at once a yr, however when i receive the fund slip, i realise every month they are drawing away in terms of units for admin charges.. ... I really do not understand why there are admin charges when they only buy in once and also there is no updates for me to switch funds or what so ever!!!!

At this point of time, i am still buying into this product as a form of high insurance coverage for me. And will dump it once i have another better prospects!...

My advise is that if you really don't know much about it, don't take much of the FA words for it. Do some homework before you decide on the dotted line.

I am not hardsaying on any company in particular, but i think most FA and banks works in the same way. Taking away our hard earn money to feed their own stomach. And there they are preaching to invest and grow your wealth ( I THINK MORE OF THEIR OWN WEALTH) cos they do not subsidise you when the funds are not performing right. If you get profits from your investment, they suck a bit from you (its oki) but if you are bleeding and they still suck (they are like DRACULAS)

Just my 2 cents worth!!!!

yes cheeko, they are all leaches. Like what someone told me 'banks/insurance co give you an umbrella when it is dry but when it starts to rain they will take it away'. Other than a couple of mortgages/credit cards and current account I don't want to have anything to do with banks because you will never achieve financial freedom with them unless you are a HNWI (high net worth indiv) bringing in a min of $1m, then you have access to really sophisticated investment tools that give pretty good results
