Day 1: Singapore to Su Ngai Kolok, Thailand

 

Starting the day at 0630 JB Shell

After Kuantan, dropped by Cherating Beach. Did some unintentional "burnout" on the sand as well.

Continued along Route No. 3 and stopping by Terrengganu for a quick lunch

 

Decided on a different game plan when im reaching Kota Bahru. Instead of staying in Kota Bahru for the night, i detour to Route No. 4 towards Jeli. Wanted to enter Thailand via Buketa, then exit via Su Ngai Kolok back to Kota Bahru for the night.

 

Exited Malaysia via Bukit Bunga Custom. They are quite surprise to see a Singapore registered bike here. Paperwork is relatively quick.

Entered Thailand via Buketa Custom. The custom office on duty have no experience with Singapore registered bike. Paperwork took longer than usual and bike attracted alot of people around while i do paperwork.

From Buketa, i head towards Su Ngai Kolok town. Military road block is extremely common along the way.

Upon reaching Su Ngai Kolok, i decided to stay over for the night here, after seeing that its quite a nice looking town and reasonably cheap hotel. Despite the unrest in the south that i heard about, it seemed safe to stay over for the night.

 

Checked into Merlin Hotel for the night. There is secured parking with security guard.

Went back to hotel to rest for the night in preparation for the next day journey towards Betong.

Day 2: Su Ngai Kolok to Betong via Gerik

Woke up early this morning and headed for Su Ngai Kolok Custom

Since I’m at Kota Bahru, I went to the famous Wat Photivihan to take a look.

From there, headed straight towards Route No.4 via Jeli. Will pass by this stone that will put little Guilin to shame.

And from this point onwards, its welcome to Biker’s Paradise. Gerik Highway. Nothing but amazing!

Didn’t have much pictures of the Gerik Highway as I was busy enjoying myself with all the twist and turns. Along one of those turns, one poor bird flew so low and collided straight onto my knee. Didn’t dare to look back because I know its sure a goner.

 

Reach the top of the Hulu Peak and had a quick lunch there.

Day 3: Betong to Hat Yai via Yala/Pattini

 

Started the day with Betong Curry Mee and teh-peng.

The route towards Yala/Pattini. Simply splendid. The scenery is totally worth many many re-do. Passing through the mountain roads, with the river/lake beside, with mountain that can put bukit timah to shame and the cooling mountain weather. The route is also quite prone to landslide, with certain portion freshly laid with tarmac due to a recent landslide.

Traffic along the way was light but need to take note of the cows/lambs/dogs that pose like king of the road.

 

I was tailgated by a van for some part of the journey and after i slow down to let it pass, i saw that they were carrying rifles with them. Thankfully, they got nothing for me, and went pass me.

 

 

At Pattini, I spotted a huge commotion at the place I pass by. Stop by to take a look, only to realized that a grenade explosion happened few hours ago killing policemen’s and wounding many! No wonder its called the restive south.

Despite so, life still goes on as per normal in Yala/Pattini.

 

The people there are quite friendly and readily offered help when i asked for directions when i was kinda lost in the city. Even at the petrol kiosk, they ask me to open my tank to see whether it is using gasohol or not, before i pump.

 

Oh well, petrol price in Thailand isnt that cheap as well.

 

From there, its straight all the way to Hat Yai. Decided to head to Samilia Beach first before going into the City. There is also a Mouse and Cat island nearby.

yea, stay at the PR mansion. cheap and good. stayed there the previous time too.

 

climb until level 3.. then betagen taking effect. rest a bit, then faster rush back to room and bomb.

 

write more on hatyai cos stay 2 days there ma. haha okie dokie. i try to expand on the yala part.

in my memory the most enjoyable route is gerik btw kelantan n betong, and route from betong to pattani... the beach ard pattani is simply awesome :) wanna go again if possible...

me too... but... if go on broad daylight, worry abt the gun shooting, its real, alot of local been gun down even they riding bike... if go by night maybe safer actualy... but the hairpin loop can be killer..

mm.. i think the daylight timing still quite okie..

 

esp if you bike is different looking from their cubs. they will be more curious to take a look. for me, i try to stop to take photos at the deserted area. didn't stop nearing roadblocks and towns except petrol kiosk.
