Normal service - change EO, inspect chain & sprockets, adjust chain tension. Do this every 3 months. Normally they charge you just for the oil and if you need to replace any bulbs or other expendables.

Full service - do this once a year, most shops take 2-3 days to finish (1 day possible in Planet Motor), they will take apart almost everything and give you back a bike that feels like new.

Full service includes servicing more obscure parts like wheel bearings, steering cone, fork oil, as well as taking apart the block, decarbonise, etc and make sure everything's ok. This is the time to get a new spark plug. 3mths is really too short unless your bike fouls the plugs rapidly (which is horrigible tuning).

Overhaul is what you send a bike for if you listened to someone who asked you to put X additive into your engine oil and you realise whatever stupid 'friction reducing' thing supposed to give you 10 extra bhp has destroyed your clutch by making it too slippery to engage.

Or if you jammed a piston, want to rebuild someone's 8 yr old motor after buying used bike, etc.

Top overhaul involves removing the block, camshafts, and piston, leaving the conrod and everything below (ie, transmission) untouched.

If the gearbox and the block needs an overhaul it's going to cost you a big bomb. Might want to get a new bike instead.

Not exactly the best local (ie, SG) definitions given but you get the idea.

Hi all,

Can someone advice me on the types of servicing done during regular maintenance of bikes?

Thanks ^.^

imo i think its best to find a trustworthy motorshop that won lie and cheat u of your money..

basic services depends on how rich u are

*chain+sprocket around 3-6 months

*spark plug around 4000km

*engine oil around 3000km

*brake pad when you feel the brake is not so strong(it doesnt cost much so pls change when it become thin)

but alot of wear and tear will come along in due time so don worry.. you learn as u ride

A good starting point for anyone :D As you become more familiar with the machine and pick up new tricks you will have your own methods.

It also pays to consult the bike's manual as manufacturers' recommendations can save you a lot of pocket money in the long run.

Good example is when a shop insists on putting 2 litres of oil into a Phantom, which will cause severe damage in the coming months (or weeks... or days...).

What about top service?? what is the difference between top service and full service??

"top" involves disassembly of your engine block(s), servicing the piston, rings, camshafts, valves.

Full service, as the name implies, is a total maintenence package. Expect them to dismantle almost everything. Usually costs about $150 for a 2B bike, provided no major parts need replacing.

Long drain interval oils appear to be popular in the automotive industry today but for motorcycles we're running very high rpms and the majority of us use wet clutches with shared oil sump with the engine itself.

We destroy EO far quicker than a car that cruises at 3000rpm and usually driven gently.

Therefore the more fresh oil the better, to the limit of budget and common sense. Oil changes not only refreshes the oil supply but removes sludge deposits and metal shavings from the crankcase. I love little 2B bikes, and I've never seen an oil filter on one before. Where do you think all the crap goes? That's right, they float around in the sump until drained.

As you can get a decent Motul EO for as low as $10, and certain excellent imported synthetics at $16, there's no real excuse not to pamper your baby :)
