I have encountered many bikers who lane split but yet remained the same speed as the cars, causing a jam for other bikers. If you want to cruise with the traffic, do keep in lane.

Another thing.

If cars are moving along side by side, I find it safer to lane split and squeeze between them. Chances are they will see the other car beside them and won't change lane.

If cars are staggering with gaps beside them, I'll be more careful. They may just swerve into the gap while you try to overtake.

side by side, lane split?

u terror .. i dont dare .. unless the gap between the two cars is pretty wide.

if one of the car decide to play punk and squeeze you, be prepared to be sandwich ......

just be alert lah. no hard and fast rules. most importantly, ride safe.:)

only do it during traffic jams. but have to be careful because most drivers like to take short cut. like the exit at stevens. thoes cars drivers will not queue at the exit but go to the lane on the right and just inch their way into the exit.

i just got my license for 2 weeks, have been riding everyday, seriously i still don't dare to squeeze in between cars after looking at those videos the instructors have shown us during our theory lessons...

How accident have happen to motorbike while squeezing thru traffic, the video just keep playing back on my mind...lol but i try to avoid staying directly behind the cars, just a little bit off the lane, so if any jam brakes i could avoid...but i still dare not squeeze in between the cars...

anyone here who doesn't squeeze in between cars while riding?:cheeky:

i do lanesplit all the times during jams as well,

however i avoid lane spliting at

-above 40km/h, if above 40km/h i will just keep in lane.

-the marking of the dotted line. it is slippery even when the floor are dry

-when there is a bent.

Didn't squeeze for the past 2 weeks at all.

However, do not try this on a bike with a tiny profile (eg, KRR, Y125Z) as people will try and snuggle up with you thinking small bikes should always squeeze.

Also, have to "mark" the lane so that people don't try their luck anyway.

Example here is traffic light turning left with no filter lane. When turning left and the light is red, stop the bike on the right side of the turning lane so some lorry doesn't park beside you and start to turn, trapping your bike in the corner...

On the highways, the locals in the holiday season are more or less okay with me acting like a car at 80kph. I just drift to the left of the lane if other motorcycles come close behind, to let them pass.

Why does everyone do things the opposite from me lol.

Lanesplitting when slow is a big no no for me. Everyone's intentions are difficult to predict.

At speed, if driver sees a bike floating to the left or right, then it's obvious he or she is going to try and lanesplit. Up to the driver to contest the passing or not.

It's nicer to 'communicate' that way, than to suddenly have to jam brake and get a motorcycle pile up because a van/lorry/taxi decided to try a snap lane change in a stationary jam.

I'm with u on that one dude.

I live in Yishun n work in Tuas. On a bad traffic day I may have to start lane splitting from Mandai!!!

But of course with a lot of care n observing the cars n their "lacer" attitudes especially their last minute lane changes.

We just don't wanna be stuck in traffic not setting a land speed record between the cages.

Grounded... :/

I don't lane split. I would rather be late, or leave home early if needed.

I always tell myself this..."A bike is not a vehicle which can shorten your travelling time, it is something for you to do while travelling."

As compared to sitting on bus or train with nothing to do, staring into blank space or just nodding off, bike keeps you alert all the way from start to end, giving you chances to make important decisions and gain life experiences...makes travelling more enjoyable/exciting (Doesn't necessary mean speeding!).

If really needed to rush for time, or don't like to wait in line during jam, I suggest taking public transport.

The very idea of biking is because we are not like cars. cars are big bulky, comfortable and clean compared to bike which is dirty, sweaty with an occasionally life threatening moments. But Biking is free and open. the freedom to be one with your environment. agreed with what vashie said. if u think bike is a means to get from one place fast by means of cutting lanes abruptly chionging red light, splitting past cars. u are not suited for it. Caused bike is more than just that.

Sometimes I find it pointless to squeeze, especially in areas with lotsa traffic lights. Squeeze there squeeze here, red light, oh it's you. Green light go, squeeze there squeeze here, red light stop, oh it's you again! It's very effective only in traffic jam condition.

i would rather take my bike than car. when in mrng traffic and after wrk traffic. just hate the rain.

Totally agreed with you!! Always like to ride than drive be in got traffic or not. Rain is my number 1 enemy when riding.

I also started out with the view that I will never lane split to avoid taking unnecessary risks. But in traffic situations, this rule can actually work against you, mainly in the form of a rear end collision. I was caught in heavy CTE traffic a while back and tried staying within the lane for the first five minutes. The traffic barely moved and cars from other lanes squeezed in front of me since I didn't take up the whole width of the lane. This p*ssed off the car behind me, who duly started honking at me. This got me all stressed, and I was like 'WTH, I'm just going to go ahead with lane splitting'.

Provided the cars are positioned well in their lanes, the split lane can be comfortably wide (I've only got a 2B bike). I'd keep a decent pace, overtaking car after car but keeping aware of what was happening five or so cars further up, and trying my best to keep aware of speeding bikes up my rear (not easy to do). If the split lane became too narrow, I'd move into a lane in between two cars and stay there until a wide enough split lane opened up. This worked quite well, but my heart rate was WAY up. The simple matter is no matter how careful you are, or how experienced you are, or how brave you think you are, there is nothing stopping Mr A*sh*le in a car changing lanes and putting a quick end to your ride. There will no doubt be riders out there who'll deem selective lane splitting to be over-the-top safe, no-balls etc. That's their prerogative. I've worked too d*mned hard to come up in life to end it trying to impress random strangers.

Yes.. can squeeze between cars.. can lane split...

BUT please... only do it when you are confident of doing it safely... THINK before squeezing in

If you have the slightest doubt that maybe something bad may happen if you do it... then just stay behind the cars..

Its quite safe to lane split in bumper to bumper traffic.

tt would be the best vehicle for my daily commute, where the jam is almost from my home until my workplace
