Overhaul or scrap?

Hi guy..

Recently my Kawasaki FU plate was sent to repair because i can't start the engine.. and once the shop check what the problem they say they need to overhaul the engine and change a few part in it, which may cost 400 plus.. worst case scenario.. might even be up to 1000 plus to get everything fixed nicely ...

 

They advise me to scrap it and i might get around 800 plus back due to my insurance and remaining COE. And i can use that amount to buy a new bike.

Which mean i would need to spent 5-8k or paying installment which i think is quite a burden ..

 

What what is i fix the bike and something bad like this happened again? afterall it a second hand bike and this things tend to happen...

Also..For FU plate it still possible to renew it COE right? at the market COE price.

I'm really in a dilemma and i can really use some advise from you guys.

Fu is 2012 . at the rate now COE is going up and up not sure when will it drop. You just brought the bike ?

overhaul lor.... most to most you spend $1000 on repairs and another $1000 on COE, or $500 for 5 years. ... $2000 still cheaper than paying $5k.

Are you a newly passed rider? It seems that you don't know what exactly is wrong with the engine, other then it needs an overhaul? I don't believe you need to scrap it, unless the bike is in "FUBAR" condition. An overhaul of a kr should cost less then 1k.

 

Also, does the shop deals with selling bikes as well? I got this feeling that the shop owner is trying to get you to scrap the bike, then buy one from his shop...

TS i think what you should do is to find out exactly what's wrong with the engine. It doesn't mean that just because the bike is second-hand, the condition of it is plain crap, unless the previous owner has been riding it without engine oil/2t for a year. It is also advisable to have another shop's opinion on the condition of your bike, hopely a more reputable one. Also, do your research first before deciding on which bike shop to do the overhaul, it makes a huge difference.

Furthermore, if your COE expires only in 2012, you can either start saving up or just pass on your bike to another dude before it expires.

 

That being said, the decision is in your hands. Do take in all the factors for consideration thoroughly so that you won't have to regret it later.

kr engine is very durable.. trust mi, as long u using good 2t, u can whack the sh*t out of her all day long. Aniwei many reason why ur bike cannot start. Battery faulty, foul sparkplug, carb problem etc. If piston jammed, juz change piston and block lor. I think less then $400.

Anywei, ur rite.. i wuz wrong abt piston, ring and blok can get below 400. but i am quite confident can at least get piston and ring.. which shd b enuff to at least get the bike runnin' if the block still ok. Sorri ar, me 5 years+ never ride small noisy 2t bike, so my knowledge quite rusty oready.

 

Anywei to TS, dun scrap ya.. better tow the bike to a reputable shop.

cannot start means overhaul? very obvious what Blahhh said was true.

cannot start doesnt mean need to overhaul. can be as simple as batt problem that gona cost u just 40- bucks or some other minor problem that cost less then 50.

 

do ur research 1st, dont spend hundreads when the real problems only cost u a day of work.

They already opened the engine and say the top part have already crack and need to change which would cost 300 dollar for sec hand..not very sure what is that. And they say if the bottom part of the engine were to fix to will add up to 1k plus.

Now the enggine can be start but it produce alot of weird noise with leakage of unsual water. that why he mechanic open up the engine..

which shop would you recommend?

anyway overhaul for thousand plus is abit too ridiculous right?

Check with the mech.

if the overhaul is cos of piston jam. A large sum needs to fork out. eg: piston/rings/con-rod/con-rod bearing/block rebore or change/crankshaft bearing? etc etc.

Do your maths... calculate the damages worth.

I believe battery flat, your 2stoker still able to kick start. So shd be problem due to Flat battery.

What if the engine is able to start aftera few hard kick but produce werid noise? would it still be expensive to fix?

Piston + piston rings + piston bearing + piston pin and all the necessary gaskets would amount close to 100..

The engine or just the block? Engine means they already drained your EO..I am guessin its the head of the block that is cracked..Might be due to piston hitting it coz of misfire or con rod is super loose..You must be new to how bikeshop find their carrots..The only advice I can give you is to find someone who can accompany you to access the damages and see if the repair changes fit the bill..
